What is Genovate about?

Genovate is an action research poject based on the implementation of Gender Equality Action Plan at 6 different European Universities.

3 areas were identified for make intervention in academic institutions for gender mainstreaming:

Recruitment, progression and research support Working environment, work-life balance, institutional

culture Standarts and diversity in research excellence and

innovation

Each partner university has its own tailored GEAP according to its needs and priorities on gender mainstreaming.

Knowledge exchange, sharing experiences and ongoing participatory evaluation are the key activities of the project which involves many national and international stakeholders

Main Purposes of AU’s GEAP

1-Knowledge building and information networking: it has been aimed to develop gender equality point of view and expand it to the whole organizational structure.

2- Secure a gender equality perspective as a management priority on administrative levels of the various units and in the level of university administration

3- To Increase the proportion of women in senior leadership positions particularly at the Rectorate, Vice-Chancellor level, and including Deans, Chair of Departments and Senior Managers and to strengthen the presence of female academics’ senior positions

AU is leading WP: Working culture and climate change

WP4 is directed towards changing working culture and climate for gender equality in the institutions.

Evaluating the current atmosphere and concrete indicators of gender equality is a starting stage

AU team was lead to conduct the gender climate assessment report of partner institutions in order to grasp gender equality perceptions of the academics in their institutions. The objective of these assessments is to identify the gaps, needs and areas for the improvement of gender equality.

Method of Climate Report and Dissemination

Survey, interview and focus group data gathering technics were used by as mixed method.

All partners have an opportunity to identify each institutions own contexts according to the perceptions of academics and inclusion mechanisms in decision making process and leadership in the institutions.

Gender Equality Climate and Culture Report of AU was distributed over 4000 academics with the signatory of AU Rector Prof.Dr. Erkan İbiş in May 2014.

Institutional Needs of AU Absence of a monitoring system to track applications, recruitment, promotion,

appointment processes of academics in the institution Absence of an academic mentoring program/system for the academics at the

institution Frequent and sometimes radical changes/improvements in the appointment

and promotion criteria Absence of an in service training program for the academics in order to raise

awareness for gender equality in academia Promoting gender balance in the relationships between the academics and

industry through the companies at university’s techno-park Absence of gender balance in allocation of research funds provided by the

Scientific Research Coordinate Office Absence of substantive gender balance among the members of commissions

and committees at AU Lack of motivation of women academics for leadership positions and for chairs

of decision making bodies of AU Need for promoting working conditions for academics

Gender Gompetent Leadership Package

AU team is also responsible for preparing D4.1. online leadership package on gender competent leadership and management for January 2015.

Embedding GECATs in the faculties can be seen as a part of supporting implementation of WP4 goals.

We’ve founded 2 Genovate Change Academy Teams: Veterinary Faculty and Faculty of Educational sciences.

We have moderated 2 Genovate Cafe’s at these faculties in order to get faculty specific needs and demands.

Networking – Implementation Strategies

AU established close connections with the Coordinatorship of Women Platform and Coordinatorship of Equality Policies through small meetings to be able to give a force for embedding some policies into the academic life of AU.

“Gender equality selective courses” for the undergraduate classes was accepted by the Rectorate and will be implemented by Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine at first.

WP4: Support female academic researchers in accessing opportunities for advancement in their careers

Training Graduate Students from different departments to improve their obtaining research funds with their projects: Support for Thesis Projects.

To increase portion of research funds of doctoral students from %1 to %3.

45 Graduate students were trained to improve their access to research funds in and outside AU in 26th February 2014.

Mentoring programme is part of AU’s agenda. We can support improvement of Ph.D. Supervisory efforts of the academics.

Embedding Structural Changes

● An Official Unit of AU Against Mobbing was established in February 2014 and chairs of the Unit are distributed in favour of women academics.

Directive for solving mobbing issues in AU is accepted in February 2014 in Senate.
