URBAN DESIGN
ARCHITECTURE TOBISHIMA project was won through an architectural competition and was to be the embodiment of a recreational facility for the community. The design is playful composition of different components of the program. The iconic forms of the conic gate, the hull of the library, the wavy roof of the indoor pool borrow from the sea and memories of the traditional fishing village of Tobishima in Japan. The fragmentation parti resulted in the creation of numerous open spaces such as plaza, court, alley and an accessible roof terrace the community is invited to use.
ARCHITECTURE + URBAN DESIGN The STRETCH commission started as an urban design exercise that turned quickly into an a detailed proposal for an urban development with architectural articulation. The Transport Oriented Development take advantage of the opening of a metro station across the road and create a 20 ha of walkable environment. The mix of uses and high standard of the development is aimed to create a destination. A Suite of public open spaces was set to facilitate the development permeability and improve the city connectivity.
EAST BAY is a district masterplan within the larger one thousand hectares Jumeirah Gardens in Dubai. Most of the 75 ha of East Bay are reclaimed land. The design assignment included shaping the peninsula in response to marine constraints, locating a cruise terminal first and a marina later, connecting to adjacent coastal islands and maximizing the cost line. As district masterplanners, we responded to strategies for a “Livable City” established at the outset of the exercise and we interfaced with other designers and disciplines to bring about a district masterplan that relates a larger master masterplan.

Meydan Comprehensive Vision
AE-7 was commissioned by Meydan to create a Comprehensive Vision Master Plan that will bring together its various developments and plots located in the Nad Al Sheba area of Dubai into one singular vision. Responding to a stated methodology, the proposal presents an updated framework that combines the current master planned developments, and future developments. The Comprehensive Vision is based on Planning Principles and integrates the knowledge from the planned developments and the disclosure of opportunities from the previous chapters, the master plan proposal attempts to bring the various developments into an interrelated and interconnected vision.

Horizon and Eastern Extension
Horizon Master Plan designed in 2006 was in need of serious of update as it was hampered by an onerous infrastructure. AE7 proposed an alternative layout based on the urban design principle of adaptability that facilitated phasing, decreased the cost of infrastructure and redistributed the land use in conformity with the present real estate market demands. After consolidating the scattered unsold plots in a restricted of portion of the development, the new masterplan realigned the roads and infrastructure network and redistributed the community facilities. Correspondingly, the Design Control Regulations are being reappraised.

The project scale was extensive enough to broaden an architecture design commission to urban design articulations such as alignment on street, plaza design, elevated deck and massing strategies. Built form research experimented with 3 dimensional porosity.

Package 21 represents one the most ambitious roads packages commissioned to consultants by the Qatari authorities. Its “Complete Street” objective drove the design approach in the context of high density vehicular circulation. Our concept design for 17 km long road networks promotes multi-modality, community building and environmental considerations. Cowi’s urban design and landscape teams coordinated very closely with our in-house transportation and infrastructure departments to bring about this transforming and civic oriented project.

The elevated site vacated by the army was made available for development. We explored mixed use scenarios including retail, hospitality, entertainment and offices while designing a network of public open spaces that would turn Taj Halab into a major attraction. Existing buildings of historical significance were preserved and incorporated into a place making masterplan scheme. A major challenge was to fragment a preset large retail complex promoted by the retail consultant and open its facades towards outdoor spaces.

MORNAG HIGH SCHOOL
School
The Governorate site is on one of the main arterial of the capital city of Tunis where main institutional buildings are lined up. The architectural parti combines an iconic tower in the corner part of the site and a podium that houses public areas and a large conference centre. Both elements are set back to form an entrance piazza enlivened by an aqueduct fountain reminiscent of the Roman past of the country.
This High School competition gave us the opportunity to pro-mote an educational institution that will be accessible to pupils and community dwellers who could use some of its facilities such as the library, meeting places and sports hall, placed on the edges of the school grounds.

PUNCAK NIAGA HEADQUARTERS
Offices
Puncak Niaga was designed to house the headquarters of an emerging water company in Shah Alam, capital of Selangor. This iconic cylindrical tower incorporated sustainability themes such as a collector of rain water on the roof of the building connected to an irrigation system for the suspended terrace gardens and the water pool at the foot of the tower. The scheme was studied with the distinguished MEP firm of Battle Mc Carthy.

Urban Design
Poplar Dock is located in the eastern vicinity to Canary Wharf in London. The masterplan brought together mix uses such as commercial, residential and convention centre. The layout was a large urban block with an urban front on a curvilinear thoroughfare and an inner core in the form of a Chinese park designed by the reputable Olin landscape design firm. The task included a presence in London of three months to refine the masterplan and obtain approval from the London Dock Development Corporation.
Aloha Tower is a waterfront master plan that combines a cruise terminal with attached customs services, a museum quay where a three masts sailing ship will be permanently moored, a retail quarters with generous outdoors amenities and residential component that combines a tower and podium. The public realm was characterised by a continuous waterfront promenade, linking to network of pedestrian retail streets and a park. Aloha tower, a historical landmark, was to become a beacon visible from the sea and the different components of the master plan through corridor vistas.
