The environmental impact of qualityOriginal HP cartridges help reduce waste
• HP photo papers with Auto Sense, which work with Auto Sense enabled HP printers automatically select the optimal blend of speed and image quality to save you ink and paper
• High capacity cartridge options maximize material efficiency
• Manageability optimizes output to reduce waste – When you use Original HP print cartridges, you’ll
receive alerts when ink or toner levels are low so that you don’t waste paper by printing pages if you are running out of ink or toner
– HP Web Jetadmin tracks ink and toner usage and issues regular supplies updates so you can plan ahead and avoid wasted pages
A variety of unique features ensure you get the most from your Original HP print cartridges

HP Supplies’ sound environmental practices in the context of the market
17 April 21, 202317 April 21, 2023
HP vs. OEM competition• Most of the OEMs offer some return
and recycling solutions to their customers
• Many limit this offer only to selected customer categories, or limited product range, or only offer very limited geographical coverage
• HP has been demonstrating leadership in providing comprehensive return and recycling service across customer segments and supplies product categories, supported by widespread geographical presence of Planet Partners

HP supports customer choice, and customers looking for quality choose HP
• For customers concerned about initial purchase price and less about quality,– A remanufactured or refilled cartridge
may be an alternative• HP does not prevent
remanufacturing or refilling• Customers choose HP printing
supplies for their superior value:– Unsurpassed reliability– Superior quality– Overall lower costs– Enhanced productivity – Ease-of-use – Peace of mind– Environmentally-sound choice
without compromise

• Cartridge remanufacturers’ environmental claims fail to account for environmental impacts often associated with their operations, including paper waste, parts replacement and disposal, and international empties transport.
“While the use of remanufactured supplies can reduce initial acquisition costs and prevent cartridges [from] going to landfills, organizations must understand that many remanufacturers do not have proper disposal practices, and their efforts may not be environmentally sound.”Source: Gartner, “How to Manage the Environmental Impact of Printing,” August 8, 2007, Frederico de Silva Leon and Ken Weilerstein.
What about cartridge remanufacturers?
20 April 21, 2023
What about remanufactured cartridges?• Industry research firm InfoTrends
found four out of five remanufactured toner cartridges sold will be thrown away after use.
• Many remanufacturers avoid, and some even refuse, to collect their own-brand cartridges for recycling.
“In the U.S. and Europe, 80% of remanufactured toner cartridges … are thrown away. This is because remanufacturers have such a strong preference for virgin empties [cartridges not previously remanufactured].”
Source: “Remanufacturer information from InfoTrends Strategic Assessment, “US and European Cartridge Collections and Recycling 2007: Laser and Inkjet Cartridges for Use in HP,” Cathy Martin and John Shane, March 2008. Commissioned by HP.
21 April 21, 2023
What about cartridge remanufacturers?
Remanufacturers provide little if any public reporting about their environmental management practices.
“Transparent and public reporting of environmental performance was not available from any of the remanufacturers that we surveyed.”

Environmental benefits of remanufactured cartridges are not as obvious as they seem
It’s worth asking:What do remanufacturers do with the many cartridges they
cannot use? What percentage of collected cartridges do they just
discard?Where do the used and worn parts go?In which country and in what working conditions does the
remanufacturing take place? How many times do they remanufacture a cartridge?
If it’s only once, can a customer rely on the remanufacturer to take back and recycle the cartridge?
If it’s more than once, what kind of quality do you get?How does the lower reliability of a remanufactured cartridge
influence the total impact on the environment?
