It was 7:00 a.m. and Tony was fast asleep. The sun had risen, the birds were singing, and his breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and a hot cup of coffee was set out on the table. So, his wife woke him up. He rose in a towering rage. “Why’d you wake me?!” he shouted. “The sun is up, the birds are singing, and breakfast is ready.” “Forget breakfast! I was about to sign a contract worth billions!” With that he shut his eyes and tried to recapture his shattered dream and all those billions. Like Tony, we are all living in a dream or trying to recapture a dream. Essentially, we are sleepwalking through life because we are stuck in the past, the future, and in our own heads. We’re sleepwalking because we think we are seeing reality as it is. We aren’t awake to the now. Jesus knows this and so tells us to stay awake. He is rousing us from our spiritual slumber to see God, the kingdom of God, right now, right here. Wakefulness is the state of just being, of being awake to That Which Is.

In today’s Gospel reading, two disciples ask to stay with Jesus. Jesus turns to them and says, “Come, and you will see.” Then, the two disciples stayed with him that day. The Greek word translated as “stay” is menein. It can also mean “remain.” This is the term Jesus uses throughout the Gospel of John to call us to wake up and to stay awake. It is one thing to have a singular experience of God in the now, and it is another thing to stay in God’s Presence. Even if we put all our energies into living a spiritual life, we are constantly in and out of the Presence of God. We get distracted, busy, preoccupied with everyday concerns. How can we remain in Jesus? How can we remain awake, happy, and free?

To make this practical, we can remain in Jesus in three ways. First, Jesus is clear in the Gospel of John that we remain in him by living his word. We remain in Jesus by living his teachings. Thus, to know the teachings of Jesus we have to read the Gospels! I suggest taking time this week to read the Sermon on the Mount, which is Chapters 5 – 7 of Matthew’s Gospel. The Sermon on the Mount is quintessential Jesus. He discusses how we live the Good News of the reign of God, how we live awake to God here and now.

Spending some time reading what Jesus has to say will enlighten us and draw us further into the truth that he proclaims.

Secondly, we remain in Jesus by celebrating the Eucharist. John’s Gospel is clear on this point. In Chapter 6, known as the “Bread of Life Discourse,” Jesus says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” We remain in Jesus and God by Eucharist. As we eat the flesh of Jesus and drink his blood, God reveals the I AM within us. As the bread and wine transform into the Real Presence, the Body and Blood of Christ, God transforms us in our eating and drinking to be the presence of Christ in the world.

Third and finally, we remain in God by living in the Divine Presence through presence. At the Last Supper, Jesus tells the disciples, “Remain in me as I remain in you.” We remain in the I AM of God in Jesus by simply being in the now. The I AM of God that Jesus embodies passes on to us when we are present in the now, that is, when we are present in God and not caught up in our thinking. Instead of straining toward the future or mulling over the past, we root ourselves here and now in faith and connect to the divine I AM. When we accept what is, we are connected to God. Just to be, or to accept what is, means we are just purely conscious in the moment. We are simply aware, and to be aware is to be rooted in God. For, God is Absolute Consciousness. Whatever we experience is a way to connect to God whether that is having dinner with the family, taking out the garbage, talking to a friend, surfing the internet, or watching television.

Therefore, we don’t need to make our lives more “churchy.” We don’t need to fill our lives up with more church stuff. Often these activities succeed only in making us feel more religious by dressing, talking, and behaving religiously. Instead, there is a need to simply open our eyes to what is always already true, here and now. If we take a deep breath and become conscious in the now we are remaining awake. If we take time to read the Gospels, indeed all of scripture, we are remaining awake. If we make Sunday Eucharist a priority and celebrate with presence, we are remaining awake. Then the joy Jesus promises will well up from within.

On behalf of Saint John the Baptist Parish, our pastor, Father David, has agreed to enter into a supportive relationship with a new project for Rosaria Communities Inc. within the parish community.

Informed by the Gospel of Life, the mission of Rosaria is to foster the construction or renovation of housing to provide independent living opportunities for developmentally disabled adults in our archdiocese who are in need. To accomplish this mission, Rosaria works to develop and promote partnerships among parishes; public and private funding sources; and care providers and facilitators. The Rosaria project in our parish will be known as St. John the Baptist House. Rosaria residences assure a living environment of comfort and care in which the spiritual needs of the residents are supported by an involved Catholic community. Rosaria is currently completing the renovation of St. John the Baptist House on 1120 Notley Road (east of New Hampshire Ave). Upon completion — around the

end of February 2018 — the house will become home to three developmentally disabled young adult men, and their resident care provider. This special quartet will become family to one another; and neighbors to all of us here at Saint John the Baptist. Our involvement as a parish will be to welcome these new neighbors to our community; and to encourage their engagement in parish life. This new ministry will also assure our neighborly interaction with the residents and care staff on an ongoing basis. If you would like to learn how you can become involved with St. John the Baptist House, representatives of Rosaria Communities will be available after today’s Masses. Also, watch the bulletin for updates about our new neighbors, as well as special dates concerning the opening and blessing of Saint John the Baptist House. Should questions arise in the interim, or for additional information, please contact Rosaria president, Tom Welch at 301-509-7599; or Rosaria executive director, Mary Lynne Boss at 443-822-2660. Or visit Rosaria Communities website, rosariacommunitiesinc.org

SJB School News SJB students stay busy through all seasons. This year we added a PreK to our school and everyone loves having the little ones around the school building. PreK has been a busy place! Last month they learned all about

food! Using the food themes, Mrs. McPherson and Mrs. Regan helped the kids learn new literacy and math skills. They found letters on food containers such as cereal boxes and pasta sauce jars and practiced reading familiar labels during literacy centers. Also, they wrote grocery lists and drew pictures of their favorite foods. For math and science, the PreK practiced sorting healthy and unhealthy foods on the smart board and with real foods! Guess what? They even baked some bread and pizza just like in the story read in class, "The Little Red Hen." With hands-on activities, the little ones learned about 3D shapes using

food containers. In the math center, the kids built with food containers. As Christmas approached, they learned all about the Nativity and the story of the birth of Jesus by reading. It was so much fun acting out a mini-version of the Nativity play.

In January, the PreK class is learning all about Neighborhood and Community Helpers! In the dramatic play center, children are dressing up as different community helpers such as the police, construction workers, and doctors. Students are building neighborhoods with blocks and many community helper vehicles are available to come aid the community. Students are practicing addition and subtraction and will continue practicing identifying and describing shapes as they will create projects related to Community Helpers. As you can see, the PreK at SJB is a busy and fun place to be.
