Chapter One – The Church’s Missionary Transformation

This chapter begins with a consideration of a “Church Which Goes Forth.”

God’s call came early in recorded history – Abraham received it; Moses heard it; it was made clear to Jeremiah; and Jesus was always explicit. Pope Francis writes:

Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the “peripheries” in need of the light of the Gospel.

The next paragraph describes a Gospel joy that enlivens the community of disciples as a missionary joy. This joy is a sign that the gospel has been proclaimed and is bearing fruit. Yet the drive to go forth and give, to go out from ourselves, to keep pressing forward in our sowing of the good seed, remains ever present.

The last paragraph of this section speaks of the importance of “taking the first step,” as Jesus

did when he washed the feet of his disciples. The Pope writes that an evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives ... bridges distances ... is willing to abase itself if necessary ... embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others ... takes on the “smell of the sheep” ... stands by people every step of the way ... consists mostly of patience and disregard for constraints of time. Finally, an evangelizing community is filled with joy; it knows how to rejoice always.

May is our month at the Closet. Help is needed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and especially Fridays. The Closet is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays; Thursdays are restocking days. Clothing donations of all types are

needed. Please contact Alyssa Sherman 703-851-5993 or [email protected] with questions.

Bereavement Support Ministry Our support group is available for anyone who is grieving because of the loss of a loved one. Join us this month as we focus on the topic, “Growing with Grief.” We will meet tomorrow, Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. in the Large Conference Room of the Kazista Center. All are welcome to attend. For more

information, please call Ruth Anne McCormick, 301-622-0664 or email [email protected]; or call Eileen Bonhag, 301-421-9065.

Reception for Fr. Tony

Father Tony D’Souza’s four-year assignment to St. John the Baptist will conclude the first week of July. Please join us today, Sunday, May 20, after the 12 Noon Mass for a reception with cake in the Hall, in honor of Fr. Tony. Since many parishioners begin to vacation as soon as school finishes and many families have other obligations in the month of June, the opportunity for parishioners to thank Father and wish him well is earlier than would be anticipated. If you are unable to join Fr. Tony on the 20th, there is still time to send him a card, note, letter or to engage in a personal chat prior to his transfer in early July. We will certainly miss having him here.

Use our QR Code to donate! Now you can use your phone to support our Church by scanning the QR Code to the right or on the Easter bookmark in the pews. The QR code is linked to Faith Direct. You may give a one-time donation or create an account for giving. Why not give it a try – it’s easy! Thank you for your support.

Catholic Relief Services - Second Collection This weekend our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection (CRSC). Funds from this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and bring Christ’s love and mercy to all people here at home and abroad. Please give generously to the CRSC, and help Jesus in disguise. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

Who Are Our Graduates? On June 17, we plan to congratulate the members of our parish family who are graduating from high school, college or graduate school. Please contact the Parish Office no later than 9 a.m. on June 6, with

the names of friends and relatives who are SJB parishioners and 2018 graduates, 301-622-1122 or [email protected].

Legion of Mary Meeting

The next Legion of Mary meeting will be on Saturday, May 26, at 10 a.m. in the School Library. Please contact Joe Peters at text/cell 301-351-2481, with questions.

Upcoming Haiti Trip It has been four years since we have traveled to Baradères, primarily due to weather related disasters. Our next visit is scheduled for May 21 – 26. Along with Cynthia Norris, our Director of Social Concerns, traveling this time will be two longstanding members of the Sister Parish Committee, husband and wife Rodney Kerby and Jill McGowen. Rodney, who was born in Haiti, has visited the

country many times over the years for both personal affairs and on behalf of SJB. His two daughters Francesca & Isabelle travelled with Rodney during past medical missions. His wife, Jill, is a very active and supportive member of the Sister Parish Committee but has never traveled to Baradères.

The focus of this visit is to meet with the people of Baradères, visit the schools and some of the chapels to see firsthand the progress being made, and meet with the graduating class of 2018 to learn what their plans are for post SJBC. This year the graduating class is smaller, 11 total, 6 males and 5 females. Fr. Jean Philippe is repairing two classrooms in the parish elementary school that lost the walls and roof, repairing the ceiling of the Church, and rebuilding the Chapel building in Vincendron. All were affected by Hurricane Matthew. He also wants to build four additional elementary school classrooms because of the growing demand in Baradères. Thanks to your generous donations during Share the Cross, Fr. Jean Philippe was able to purchase and install the solar panels and batteries in the rectory. The team is particularly happy to know that there will be electricity during their visit! They will also spend time with the local leadership discussing the Sister Parish Project, their priorities, and future directions. Please keep our team in your prayers as well as our sisters and brothers in Baradères. Please contact Cynthia Norris, Director of Social Concerns, [email protected], with any questions.

The Pope Francis Movie

The Pope Francis -A Man of His Word movie is now in theaters. You may never have a chance to meet Pope Francis in person, but this movie, co-produced with the Vatican’s Office of Communication, may make you feel as if you did. The Vatican wanted to make a film that was not about Pope Francis, but rather from Pope Francis, directly addressing the audience, as if sitting face-to-face with them. This movie is made for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. It conveys that God loves each one of us unconditionally – no matter what our color or creed – and we are called to also love each other, and to love the world that God has entrusted to us. Watch your local movie listings for viewing times.

Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation

Membership in the Church is no small thing. To be a member of the Church means we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Letter to the Galatians, St. Paul says, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.” The gift of the Spirit enables us to take up the greatest adventure in all the universe: the spiritual journey, which is about seeking the Absolute. To be in the Church, to be a follower of Jesus, is to be seeking the Absolute.

Pentecost is the feast of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church. The two mysteries are related. We each have the Holy Spirit, who as the very Love of God dwells within us, and so we can live spiritual lives. A spiritual life is not a life opposed to the regular activities, experiences, and relationships that make up our everyday lives. Spirit is not the extreme opposite of the physical. They are one. God is within us, and this is true at this very moment. Rather, to live spiritually means being on a journey of seeking the Absolute Reality we call God and knowing this Reality more and more. It is a life that changes us so that we can pour the love of God into our world and share in its healing and salvation. The spiritual life means we seek the Absolute in our own lives, not apart from the warp and woof of our daily existence but precisely in it.

This seeking of God, the Absolute, does not happen in a sealed-off individual life. I seek the Absolute along with many, many others. This is the Church. It is the community dedicated to seeking the Absolute. The Second Vatican Council calls the Church, “the pilgrim people of God.” All of us together are on the spiritual journey. We are a people at once wholly one with God yet in great need of realizing we are one with God. This is true of each one of us personally and of the entire Church collectively. Like the people of Israel wandering in the desert, we can feel lost. We can feel like the whole Church is lost! Yet, like the ancient Hebrews in the desert, we too are being led by God. The spiritual life calls us to seek God within our souls and in the Church. But, is this what we really want?

What are you seeking? Do you seek power? Fame? A slightly higher salary? A morning without traffic? A good cup of coffee? Jesus says, “Where our treasure is, there our heart lies.” What we cherish

reveals our true intention. We may never want grand things like celebrity, millions of dollars, a villa in Tuscany, or whatever rich fantasy we can concoct. Our desires may be far simpler. We may want a night to

ourselves, a slimmer waistline, a smile from the lady at the grocery store, a decent parking space, or ability to pay all our bills. How much do we want these little things? The spiritual journey involves becoming clear about what we truly desire. It is a daring journey within, a prayer journey so we can gain our heart’s ultimate desire: the Absolute. Everything else pales in comparison. Nothing else will truly satisfy. Desire for God is more than a mundane desire. The desire for God is who we are. To take a radical journey inward

through prayer is to discover how much competition the desire for the Absolute has. As soon as we pray, a thousand other wants can come rushing in. Becoming aware of these other wants helps to clarify our desire for God, and, along with interior silence, leads us to the still point of desire: God alone.

The Rule of St. Benedict begins with the words, “Let anyone come who seeks Christ.” Perhaps this is the real litmus test for the Church? Do we want God? Do we seek the Absolute? If so, we are in the right place. We may think we’re not worthy, sinful, or too immoral ever to seek God. Jesus reminds us we are not, for God loves us just as we are. Jesus send us the Spirit to keep us in the loop of relationship with God. The Spirit is our unbreakable tether to the Absolute. Nothing we do can outright destroy the divine indwelling, that is, God present within us. St. Paul says, “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.” No one is excluded. All have the Spirit. God is within us all; God is with the Church.

God is with us. We are the Church. Even more, the Church is here to help us own this truth, enjoy it, live it, and pass it on to others. For when we know God’s love deep in our souls we are compelled to share it. Here we come to the greatest mission of the Church, namely, to share the unbreakable intimacy with the Absolute each of us already has.

SJB School News May is a busy month at SJB. It is a month in which we honor our mothers here on earth and remember our mother in heaven, The Blessed Virgin Mary. At SJB, we honored Mary at our May Crowning last Wednesday. Students from all the classes processed from the school to the church carrying flowers to honor our mother in heaven, Mary. The 8th grade class served as the class leaders. It was a beautiful way to honor Mary. Some students also depicted

their mothers through drawings. Caitlyn Ober and Julie Zalalutdinov, both 7th graders, showed through drawings their vision of Mary in heaven and their mother on earth. This year Nicole Ionata (8th grader) and Izzy Golding (2nd grader) crowned Mary.

Looking ahead, the 8th graders are starting to prepare for their final exams. Following their exams, they will gear up for another SJB tradition – our annual Field Day on Friday, May 25. It is a fun-filled day when the Class of 2018 will lead the younger students in activities filled with fun, sun, and a little water! The annual relay involving all the classes will be held on this day and we welcome all to come see this fun-filled competition. Come and cheer on our runners; it begins around 11:15 a.m. and will be held on the SJB field. Let’s pray for good weather Our school year is moving along very quickly with only five weeks remaining. As students prepare for final projects and exams, they also look forward to the end of the year class picnics and field trips. The younger grades enjoy picnics with their classmates while the 7th graders go to King’s Dominion and the 8th graders go to Hershey Park. The end of the year fun is enjoyed by all students and teachers. It won’t be long before we say hello to SUMMER!
