It is a very sad commentary on what is happening to San Manuel when someone steals a box of toys meant for the needy in the Tri Community. The San Manuel Historical Society and Thrift Store put out boxes to collect toys for needy families. When I went to collect the toys the box was gone. The next day it was there

empty. When I spoke to the manager, he said someone came in and took it. All I can say is, if your need was so great that you had to steal them, then you are welcome to them. But you could have done it the honest way and put in a request. Shame, shame on you./s/ Janice RappThrift Store Manager

Oracle State Park Center for Environmental Education will re-open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays beginning Feb. 2. Spring activities will include the popular guided bird walks and hikes, tours of the historic Kannally ranch house, an astronomy night, continuous wildlife video showings, nature-based workshops and Earth Day programs.

One of 27 state parks, Oracle State Park is

located northeast of Tucson in the northern foothills of the Catalina Mountains and features quite picnic spots, miles of hiking trails, stunning views of the mountains, and access to oak-woodland trails like the Arizona Trail.

The park was only open Saturdays last spring and fall after being closed for more than two years as a result of state budget cuts.

Environmental education programs for school children, first-

Oracle State Park re-opens for weekends in February, March, Aprilthrough sixth-grades, are being scheduled by reservation on weekdays. Thousands of students have learned important environmental principles in these ranger/volunteer-led programs over the last two decades. Elevations in the 4,000-acre wildlife

refuge range from 3,500-4,500 feet. The park’s extraordinary diversity of animals, plant species, and rock formations enchants visitors time and time again. From oak tree-shaded washes, to mesquite scrub habitats, to riparian woodlands with manzanita and beargrass,

the pollution-free vistas to the Galiuro Mountains and across the San Pedro River Valley are unforgettable. Trails, offering varying degrees of difficulty, are nicely mapped and marked. A four-mile section of the Arizona Trail transects the park. Bring your camera, binoculars,

notebook, sketchbook, birdbook, and leash for Fido. Picnicking on the ranch house patio is welcomed. Restaurants and attractions in the quaint community of Oracle are nearby. For those seeking a more tranquil experience,

By Mila Besich-Lira The Pinal County Planning and Zoning commission will have a hearing on Jan. 17, 2013 to approve or deny a request to open Pinal County’s fi rst medical marijuana facility in Duddleyville. The application was submitted by Paul Shaub, Dr. Glenn Wilt and Gregory

Rowles. The three member board plans on opening the Pinal County Wellness Center to distribute marijuana to authorized prescription users. The dispensary will be located on property owned by Dr. Wilt across Valentine Road from the Minit Mart on Highway 77. Wilt owns dozens of properties

Medical marijuana dispensary in Pinal County under reviewthroughout the Copper Corridor. According to the submitted application, there are 73 medical marijuana authorization cards in the Community Health Action Area (CHAA) #94 as of August 13, 2012. The CHAA area will serve Dudleyville, San Manuel, Oracle as well as other surrounding communities. According to the medical marijuana law, a prescription holder can grow their own marijuana under certain requirements. If the facility should open card holders in CHAA #94 will not be allowed to grow their own marijuana. If the application is recommended for approval by the commission, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors

will have fi nal approval on the application. If the Board approves, the Planning and Zoning department will then complete an administrative site review to ensure that the building requirements, such as parking, are met. The Arizona Department of Health Services will review, authorize and monitor the

medical marijuana dispensary permitting once the business location is set. For more information or see a copy of the permit application you can review it online at: http://www.pinalcountyaz.gov/Departments/PlanningDevelopment/Lists/NOHPZ/Attachments/117/SUP01012.pdf

By Mila Besich-Lira Resolution Copper offi -cials held out hope that the 2012 Congress would pass H.R.1904, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act, in the lame duck session of Con-gress, but to no avail.

Company offi cials have said the land exchange is critical to the future devel-opment of the mine. With-out the exchange, Resolu-tion will not be able to open the mine. It is expected the company will review their strategy for

future legislation. Rio Tinto, the British-based multinational com-pany that owns Resolution, announced large layoffs earlier this month that were due in part to political un-certainty and the numerous failed attempts at passing

the exchange. Arizona Senators John McCain and Jon Kyle both worked to get the bill ap-proved. In the days before Christmas, attempts to at-tach the bill to other legisla-tion or pass it on its own failed.

By John HernandezCharlotte Miera, the

founder of local animal rescue group At Risk Rescue, unexpectedly passed away late last month and her friends are asking for help to keep her shelter operational.

“I loved her to pieces” said friend Cher Heath,

who said Miera was an amazing animal lover and advocate. “She will be missed.”

Miera founded At Risk Rescue in 2011 and under her leadership more than 1,000 cats and dogs were spayed or neutered in less than a year. Heath said that Charlotte cared so much

Nilly is a nine-month-old Corgi mix puppy. She is high-energy with a needy personality. She needs a family with older children that she can play with and can exercise her. She is crate trained, house broken, spayed and has all her shots. For more information on how you can adopt Nilly, call (520) 705-5425 or (520) 896-2405. (John Hernandez photo)

needed and paid for vet visits,” Heath added. “She was also instrumental in getting dogs placed in foster homes and adopted. She instilled a strong sense of responsibility for animals that no one else could.”

To carry on her dream, the founding members and volunteers of this animal rescue group will re-organize under a new name, Charlotte’s Way Rescue. Friends said the name a play on how Miera was known to be pushy, but always got things done.

A memorial service is planned in Oracle for Charlotte next year with details forthcoming. In lieu of fl owers, donations will be accepted in her name for Charlotte’s Way Rescue.

At Risk/Charlotte’s Way Rescue is in need of volunteers to help with exercising and feeding dogs, transportation to vets, cleaning their pens and completing paperwork. They also need help in organizing and working at fundraisers.

The organization can also use donations and foster families to take care of animals until they can be adopted.

The Rescue will provide food for fostered pets. For more information on how to help, contact Cher at (520) 705-5425 or Laura at (520) 405-6484 or (520) 896-2405.

Donations can be dropped off at Hot Dogs & Cool Cats grooming service, Monday through Thursday on American Avenue in Oracle.
