OUR ALMA MATER.

W c arc happy to announce the continued pro~perity of our Alma :Mater. 'l'hc year succeeding the" Golden 'redding" has indeed been propitious for Old Hamilton. .Xotwithstanding the war times, the friends of the Institution luwc JH'OYcd their loyalty to its interests, and a new Profcssor~hip liaR been endowed. The College grounds fitly portrny the clements of our growth and progress. 'l'hc Campn~, beautified as it is with hedges and flowers, and winding; wnlks and carriage way~, not only welcomes the visitor, but inrigoratcR the student. Here, the elms of the old world and the maples of the new, the sil rcr firs of Siberia and the pines of Or<•p;on "in harmony dwell"-a happy type of friendship ami good will. .X aturc not only contributes to make our study-home plca~ant and desirable, but we find in our Profl'-<sors superior abilities blended with geniality.

But in the quiet of our seclusion we are nnt umnitulful of the husy world without. Our "roll of honor" will ~how that within these walls is found material for fighting ns well as thinking. Some of our companions have already fallen on the battle-field. :X o where arc the daily paper;; more anxiously looked for ; and as announcements of victory or defeat come from the scenes of strife, no where can t he deep i nHpiration of true patriotism be more clearly seen than in the old College Chapel.

W c of the Class of '63 I care our Alma :.\later not without feelings of regret, yet we welcome the wide world. The first class in forty years to graduate no "~ccond dirision men," we can only hope for like succe,;s in the future. "•ith our ranks decimated, like those of "veteran rcgimcnti<," :wcl mouming the Joss of a. BAco~ and a TcRXER, we go forth, and may the fond dreams of College days be realized.

OBITUARY .

Adjutant 'VILT.TAli K. BAco~, a mcmbe1· of th<> Senior ClaR~, was killed at the battle of Frcdcl'ichhurg-, Dc<'<•mher 13tll, 1862. Xo eul ogy can adequately CX}H'C~H the feelings of friendship with which Bacon was regarded while i n College ; nor did he hold a less cnviahlc position as a scholar.

Connecting l1imsclf, as a private, with the lit·st regiment that mardwd from our county, hy intrin~ic merit and unaided efforts, he arose at once to the position of Adjutant. In the battles of Ce<lar )!onntain, Bull Run, (where he was wounded while gallantly leading his regiment again~t the enemy,) ancl Fredericksburg, he horc a conspicuous part. Fredericksburg was dcstinc<l to be the clo~e of a life ~o c,-cntful. A rebel bullet at once deprived his coul!try of a bra,-e soltlicr, and an honored family of an only son. l1 is funeral obsequies were attended at Utica, hy an inunensc coneour:<c, assembled to pay the last rites of respect 'to the youthful soldier.

On the 16th of December, 1862, in the engagement under Gen. Foster, at Goldsboro', :X. C., Roamr 'lbtxF.R, of the Class of '63, gayc up his I ifc for his country.

The remains of one so brilliant, so ft·ank, so heautiful, intelligent, genial, earnest, ardent, now moulder hcncath the ho~tilc ~oil of Carolina, hut his noble ~pii·it has gone up aho,·c the din of the conflict, to meet its reward at the hand of the

1 God of Battle~. He fell as a priYatc in the 24th :X. Y. I Artillery, fighting, not for honor, not for reward, hut ~s a I " Christina soldier ! "

Hbtory may not carve his name on her tahlcts, hut the name and memory of "Boh Turner" arc alrca<ly writtl'n in letters incfl'aC'cahlc on the hearts of all who knew him.

On the 31st day of .January, 1863, Sergt. Gt:ORGt: A. WAT

so~, of the ll2th Regiment of Xew York Yolunteer~, was killed in the hattie of 13laC'kwatcr.

Among the numerous roluutcct·s from Hamilton College, who responded ~o nohly to the call of tlw l're~idcnt one year ago, he was the first of the class of '64 to seal his d<•votion to his eountry with hiH blood.

X o man ever enlisted from a higher ~cn~c of duty, or endured more chc<·rfully the hardtships incident to the soldicr'H life. A large <.:irC'lc of acquaintances deeply mouru his lo~s ; ,

I and his quiet, uuobtru~ive goodne~s will never pas~ from the I. .u6r The Annual Conn~ntion of the Sigma Phi Society will memory of his College friends. be held with the Beta of Xew York, at Hamilton College, on I

In the words of his Captain, "he died a glorious death, without a struggle, without a groan, in the front line, cheering on his comrades." He cnli~tcd, fought, and ga\"l' up his life as a Christian patriot ; and is now numbered among the "unreturning brave" of his Alm11 )later. ... E NDOWED PROFESSORSHIP S.

Soon after Dr. Gocrtncr cntcrerl upon his important work in connection with the endowment of Hamilton Colleg-e, the citizens of Utica undertook to ~ccurc a fund fot· tli<' Professorship of Rhetoric and Elocution, nml ~o l'ar Rucccedcd as to leave no doubt of their ultimate success. 'l'hc ' Yalcott fund for the Professor of Chri~tian Evidences was soon after added, I and is already fully available. In 1::!6~ the Latin Profc~sorship was establiohed on a basis pro,·ided mainly by tiimcon Benjamin, Esq., of Elmira, and :.\[rs. Sally Bates, of lthata. This year is signalized by the endowment of the Hobinwn Profess· on;hip of Greek, in honor of one of Hamilton's noblest sons. I Twenty thousand dollars have been pledg-ed for this ohjcet hy , friends of the College and of Christian Fcholar:;hip in :Sew York and its vicinity.

In speaking of endowment~, we Rhonld not overlook the ~faynard Professorship of Law, which gives to the course of instruction in Hamilton one of its pc<.:uliar· and most valuable featurcH. Our .AlmtL Mater has now fh·e endowed dcpartlll<'nts, and never before did bet· future look RO bright. All honor to Dr. Goertner for his success in presenting the claims of Collegiate Education-tL success t hat reminds ns of words used by Daniel Webster in speaking of Alexander Hamilton: "He smote the rock of the national resources, aud abundant streams of rnenue gushed forth."

PRUYN M E DAL.

It is expected that the first of the l'rnyn ~Icdals will be 1

ready for presentation at the close of Commencement day. It will be a gold medal, of the value of thirty-lh·c dollars, and will carry on its face a bust of Alexander Hamilton, after whom the College was named, with thiH legend : "FrxnArni I A JonAxxr Y. L.
