The entire North Collins 5th grade class under the di-rection of Mrs. Jill Finkley and Mrs. Ruth Davis traveled to Kleinhan's Music Hall in Buffalo to hear a performance of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The students have been learning about several composers and listening to music from different cultures and the concert program fit in perfectly to what they've been doing in class. WNY Author’s Latest BookHighlights Twenty-Year Media Career
Abt’s Heart and Soul newspaper and radio commentaries featured in new anthology
When author Christina Abt received a unique Christmas gift from her daughter she never imagined it would help her achieve the writing career of her dreams, which now includes her third and latest book, Heart & Soul, The Best Years of My Op-Ed Life. “Like most Americans I was a great fan of syndicated columnist and author, Erma Bombeck,” Abt said. “In 1996 when Bombeck died, I felt as if I had lost a true friend. To deal with my sense of loss, I wrote an essay that was pub-lished as a “My View” column in the Buffalo News. That Christmas my daughter created a plaque containing my column along with one of Erma’s. She instructed me that I was to hang it by my desk for writer’s inspiration. Within a few years, I was writing my own Op-Ed columns in The Sun Newspaper and broadcasting listener commentaries on WBFO radio. Obviously the inspiration of both Erma and my daughter worked.” For fifteen years, Abt crafted her newspaper column and radio commentaries under the title of Heart and Soul. Early on, she wrote about the things she knew best---family, love, home and holidays. Over time, she expanded her writer’s view to include the life topics of parenting, sports and ca-reers, eventually evolving onto more broad-based topics of community, politics and women’s issues. According to Abt, her new bookis a collection of those essays which in-spired, amused and stirred her followers. “The best part of writing commentaries was the respons-es they encouraged from readers and listeners,” Abt said. “My columns have been read on the floor of Congress and entered into the Congressional Record. They have been republished in national book anthologies and online web-sites. They have been shared between family and friends and saved in scrapbooks as memories of the people, places and events about which I have written. That’s exactly what Erma did with her columns, she reached people through her stories and I am grateful to have enjoyed that same experience.” WBFO news director emeritus, Mark Scott, chose Abt as the only woman in a group of four listener commentators to regularly broadcast on the NPR affiliate. He recalls the writer’s story-telling ability as key to her popularity. "When WBFO introduced listener commentaries in the 1990s, Christina was one of our first contributors. Her pieces were so engaging that we eventually found a regu-larly scheduled spot for them during our "Morning Edi-tion" program. Christina created wonderful radio for our listeners and always touched their hearts, whether sharing a comment on an issue in the news or a very personal story of a life experience. She is a gifted writer and it's great that we're able to once again experience the heart and soul of Christina in this book.” A special limited edition of Heart & Soul, including a CD of select Abt WBFO Commentaries and BuffaloStyle stories, is currently available through her website (http://christinaabt.com/purchase-heart-soul/). Stories high-lighted on the CD include Saving St. Ann’s Church and Shrine, The Spirit of Buffalo, The Liberty Belle, WNY Pup-peteer Cam Garrity, Extreme Home Makeover, Flight 3407, AM&A’s Christmas Windows, The Massachusetts Avenue Project, Ladies First Big Band, The Crystal Beach Ballroom and tributes to Tim Russert and Buffalo activist, Michele Johnson. Heart & Soul is available at Eden Kazoo Gift Shop, Braymiller’s Market, Vidler’s 5&10 and Talking Leaves as well as online at Amazon.

Choosing the right restaurant for your
dinner partyGetting together with family and friends for a good meal is a great opportunity to reconnect and share a few laughs. Though such gatherings have traditionally taken place at private homes, today's busy adults are increasingly turning to restaurants to host their mini reunions. Restaurants don't require hosts and guests to wash any dishes, and hosts won't have to find time to clean their homes top to bottom like they would if they were to have a party at home. Such a reality makes a dinner party at a local restaurant a lot less stressful for the hosts. There are a number of things to emphasize when looking for the right restaurant to host the next dinner party.
ProximityWhether entertaining family and friends or a business dinner, the restaurant where you will be gathering should be easily accessible to all people who plan to attend. A centrally located restaurant that's only a short drive for guests and hosts alike is ideal, as it cuts back on the time people will spend driving to and from the restaurant. Try to accommodate those guests who don't drive by choosing a restaurant that's accessible via public transportation.
PricePerhaps the only downside to hosting a dinner party at a restaurant is that such gatherings tend to be more expensive than parties at private residences. Hosts should first determine who will be paying the bill. If everyone has agreed to pay their own portion of the bill, this gives you a little more flexibility when choosing a restaurant. If you, as the host, intend to pick up the tab for everyone, then you might want to find a nice restaurant with reasonably priced entrees. A five-star restaurant might break the bank, but you might be able to find a three- or four-star restaurant that's still elegant and more affordable. If each guest intends to pay for his or her own meal, discuss with guests how much they would like to spend before making a reservation. Once you have an idea of what everyone is willing to spend, you can start to narrow down your options.
MenuThe menu is an important thing for hosts to consider when choosing a restaurant for their next dinner party. Many men and women adhere to certain diets or lifestyles that restrict what they can and cannot eat, and you will want to find a restaurant that can cater to as many of your guests' needs as possible. Discuss any dietary restrictions with your guests before you begin the process of finding a restaurant. If the responses are slow to come in, you can still go ahead with your search, but look for restaurants that offer vegetarian and gluten-free fare. When examining the menu, take into consideration any offerings for kids if any guests are planning to bring their children along. Kids tend to prefer chicken fingers and fries over filet mignon and baked potatoes, so the restaurant should have some menu items for young children if kids will be joining in the festivities.
AccessibilityWhen looking for a restaurant, try to find one that's easily accessible for any older guests who might not get around as easily as they used to or any guests who might have a disability that requires handicap accessible seating and restrooms. Many restaurants can fill both of these needs, but it's still up to hosts to ask in advance so all guests have a comfortable evening. The parking lot should not be too far away, but if it is, ask the restaurant manager if valet service is available for those guests who might prefer it.A dinner party at a restaurant with family, friends or even professional colleagues often makes for an enjoyable evening for guests and hosts alike. But hosts must consider several factors before ultimately choosing where they and their guests will dine.

Planning Your Party menu
Many partygoers admit that they often look forward to foods served during social gatherings. The way to a man’s heart may be through his stomach, but the same sentiment can be applied to both male and female guests invited to your next soirée. While it might not be possible to please everyone’s palate, the following are some food factors hosts should keep in mind as they prepare to throw their next party.
• Consider your party theme and size. Food choices should fit with the type of event you are hosting. A three-course formal meal probably will not complement an afternoon watching the game with friends, nor would it work well when you’re on a time crunch before seeing a show. Take into consideration the party you will be hosting and make sure the foods you choose work in conjunction with other details of the festivities. Finger foods are ideal when guests are mingling, while a more formal sit-down meal is more appropriate when you want to engage guests in conversation.
• Calculate how much food you need. It’s always better to have extra food than a shortfall of it, but it’s best to find the right balance to avoid costly excess and waste. Many caterers offer approximations regarding how many people a tray or platter of food will feed. You can use these estimates as references for the food you will be preparing as well. Keep in mind that serving sizes are only a few ounces for many foods. Guests who are drinking plenty of beverages also may feel less hungry.
• Provide a variety of foods. While you can’t offer everyone’s favorite dish, you can vary your offerings so that guests are more likely to find something they will enjoy. Stick to crowd favorite foods and use spices or ethnic offerings sparingly. Offer vegetables, a starch such as rice or potatoes, a lean meat or poultry, and perhaps a seafood dish. Ask guests to let you know if they have any food allergies, making sure to prepare all dishes separately so there is no risk of cross-contamination. Separate offerings when serving as well so guests do not mistakenly use a serving spoon that might be contaminated with something they are allergic to.
• Make items in advance. Hosting a party requires hosts to take on several different roles. Hosts don’t want to spend the party serving and preparing dishes in the kitchen while their guests are having fun. Whenever possible, choose dishes that can be prepared and refrigerated or frozen in advance of the party. Such dishes can then be reheated the day of the party, saving you time and making sure you get to spend some quality time with your guests. Store-bought appetizers or side dishes can help you focus on the main courses and free up some extra preparation time.
• Know your guests. If your guest list tends to include the same people again and again, you have likely grown accustomed to their culinary preferences. If that’s the case, choose dishes you know will be a hit, which can save you the headache of planning a menu.
