When astronomers detected intense radiation pumping out of the Crab

Nebula, one of the most studied objects in space, at higher energies

than anyone thought possible, they were nothing short of stunned.

The powerful gamma-rays came from the very heart of the Crab Nebula,

where an extreme object called a pulsar resides.

"It was totally not expected it was absolutely jaw-dropping,"

Andrew McCann, a Ph.D. candidate at McGill University in Montreal,

Canada, and a co-author of the new study, told Space.com. "This is

one of the hottest targets in the sky, so people have been looking

at the Crab Nebula for a long time. Now there's a twist in the tale.

High-energy rays coming from the nebula are well-known, but coming

from the pulsar is something nobody expected."

Details of the study, which was led by Nepomuk Otte, a postdoctoral

researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz, are

published in the Oct. 7 issue of the journal Science.

The photogenic Crab Nebula is really the wreckage of a long-dead

star that emitted an explosion of light that reached Earth in the

year 1054, and was seen and recorded by Chinese and Native American

skygazers. The dying star was located 6,500 light-years away from

Earth in the constellation Taurus when it erupted in a brilliant

supernova explosion.

At the heart of the nebula's colorful layers of gas is a so-called

pulsar, which is the remains of the original star's core that

collapsed in on itself into a super-dense, spinning neutron star.

The Crab pulsar spins 30 times a second and is so dense that it has

a greater mass than the sun.

A pulsar emits a continuous beam of radiation that sweeps around

like a lighthouse, but appears to pulse when it is viewed through

ground-based telescopes.

.The gamma-ray beams that were detected from the Crab pulsar

exceeded 100 billion electron-volts, stronger than anyone or any

theories projected a million t imes more energetic than medical X-

rays and 100 billion t imes stronger than visible light, the

researchers said.

"If you asked theorists a year ago whether we would see gamma-ray

pulses this energetic, almost all of them would have said, 'No,'"

study co-author Martin Schroedter, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center

for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., said in a statement. "There's

just no theory that can account for what we've found."

The Hubble Space Telescope has caught the most detailed view of the

Crab Nebula in one of the largest images ever assembed by the

space-based observatory. In fact, the findings were so unlikely that

some researchers told Otte that he was crazy to look for such highly

energetic emissions from the pulsar.

"It turns out that being persistent and stubborn helps," Otte said

in a statement.

Shaking up the field

These new details of the Crab pulsar could change scientists'

understanding of gamma-ray emissions and how they are generated,

Otte added.

"We thought we understood the gamma-ray emission, and this was

really becoming a foundational feature of our models, but that's now

thrown out," McCann explained. "The reason why this is so exciting

is that it 's turning things around in the field."

The gamma-ray beams from the Crab pulsar were detected by the Very

Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), which

is located at the Smithsonian's Whipple Observatory, just south of

Tucson, Ariz.

Possible explanations for the Crab pulsar's intense beams have been

suggested, but the researchers said that plenty more data will need

to be collected before the mechanisms behind these gamma-ray pulses

can be better understood.

not stay activated, so coverage from this camera is intermittent.

Sun Angle LRV Television - As long as the lunar rover batteries were

did so to observe it at various sun angles. LRV television was also

used to observe detonation of some of the explosive charges left

behind.

On the way back from the moon, Apollo 17 transmitted broadcasts

during the lunar orbit rendezvous and docking operations, views of

the moon just after the transEarth injection burn, coverage of Ron

Evan's SIM bay EVA, and held an in-flight press conference.

The longest of the Apollo missions (not including the Skylab

program), the 13 days of Apollo 17 ended with a splashdown in the

Pacif ic Ocean about 3 1/2 miles from the recovery ship, the U.S.S.

Ticonderoga.

The sixth and last Apollo lunar-landing mission also established

many firsts - the longest lunar surface stay time of 75 hours,

longest total surface EVA time with just over 22 hours, and the most

samples returned to Earth, with about 250 pounds (115 kg) returned.

adentro. Los habitantes de la regin inglesa de East Yorkshire no se

explicaban el 29 de septiembre pasado cmo el cetceo, una hembra

joven de ms de diez metros de largo, pudo arrastrarse a tal

distancia del mar, sobre tierra firme. Ahora, Walter Stuart Gibson

Enseguida supe que no poda ser fortuito, asegur Gibson, un

viandante del lugar que afirma haber presenciado trasiegos

aliengenas en torno a la ballena muerta.

El estreimiento es una condicin que consiste en la falta de

movimiento regular de los intestinos o que no se vacan totalmente

Este es un mal muy comn debido a que las personas se hanvuelto ms

sedentarias (falta de ejercicio, toman poco lquidos y

consumenalimentos con poca fibra.

Sin embargo, muchas veces se desarrolla elestreimiento, tambin, en

determinadas situaciones como cuando se viaja o cuando la persona

sufre un perodo de estrs.

Los principales sntomas del estreimiento son:

Dolor y dificultad para evacuar

Inflamacin abdominal

Heces secas y duras

Evacuaciones poco frecuentes (una vez cada 4 o ms das)

Es importante saber que el estreimiento tambin, puede ser una

consecuencia de alguna enfermedad o condicin como problemas de

tiroides, con hgado, vescula, menopausia, embarazo y obstruccin

en colon.

Cuando el estreimiento se hace crnico, predispone la aparicin del

reumatismo, la artritis, hipertensin arterial y hasta el cncer ya

que reparte, a travs de la circulacin sangunea, toxinas por todo

el organismo.

Remedios populares

Remedio para el estreimiento #1: Frotarse el vientre con aceite de

oliva en movimientos circulares, siguiendo las manecillas del reloj.

Remedio para el estreimiento #2: Tomar todos los das un par de

cucharadas de pulpa de aguacate mezclado con miel.

Remedio para el estreimiento #3: Comer papaya todos los das

preferiblemente durante la maana.

Remedio para el estreimiento #4: Tomar agua en ayunas y otro vaso

antes de acostarse, ya que suele estimular el intestino.

Remedio para el estreimiento #5: Sustituir pan blanco por el

integral.

Remedio para el estreimiento #6: Tomar una infusin malva en ayunas

diluido en un vaso de agua tibia.

Remedio para el estreimiento #7: Comer ciruelas pasas en la maana

Remedio para el estreimiento #8: Tomar una maceracin de semillas

de lino el cual t iene excelentes propiedades laxantes. Para ello, se

debe echar 2 cucharadas de semillas de lino en una taza de agua

caliente y dejarlo reposar durante 12 horas, macerando. Una vez

pasado ese tiempo, se mejora el gusto con un poco de limn o miel.

Se recomienda tomarlo antes de acostarse en la noche.

Remedio para el estreimiento #9: Aadir a un yogurt natural (en lo

posible hecho en casa) 1 cucharada de semillas de lino.

Remedio para el estreimiento #10: Cocer litro y medio de agua con

50 g de pasas, 50 g de higos secos y 50 g de cebada. Agregar 15 g

de regaliz troceado y tapar el recipiente durante la noche.

Despus, colar y tomar una cucharada cuando lo crea conveniente.

Remedio para el estreimiento #11: Extraer el jugo de dos naranjas y

aadir dos cucharadas de aceite puro de oliva. Mezclar y tomar

preferiblemente en la maana.

Remedio para el estreimiento #12: Comer una pera cruda con cscara

en ayunas.

Remedio para el estreimiento #13: Rallar las races y las partes

bajas de los tallos de apio, mezclarlo con aceite de oliva y sal en

una batidora. Tomar una cucharada en ayunas y otra antes de

acostarse.

Remedio para el estreimiento #14: Consumir de 2 3 damascos,

acompaados con abundante agua, por la noche, una hora antes de irse

a acostar, y luego por la maana en ayunas.

Remedio para el estreimiento #15: Elaborar todos los das una

ensalada de col a la cual se aadir un poco de aceite de oliva.

Consumirla preferiblemente por la maana. La col t iene gran cantidad

de fibra insoluble que estimula el movimiento de las paredes

intestinales e incrementa el tamao de las heces lo cual facilita su

agua y comerlo como una papilla alrededor de las nueve de la noche.

Remedio para el estreimiento #17: Mezclar 2 cucharaditas de

cscara de llantn en polvo en una taza de agua. Tomar

inmediatamente y, a continuacin, beber un vaso de agua. El llantn

aumenta el volumen de las heces.

Remedio para el estreimiento #18: Realizar duchas circulares

diarias en el vientre con agua caliente durante cinco minutos.

Remedio para el estreimiento #19: Aplicar compresas de arcilla

sobre el vientre durante 20 minutos.

Remedio para el estreimiento #20: Macerar toda la noche 3

hirviendo 1 cucharada de hojas de sen, 1 puado de semillas de

hinojo y 1 cucharada de flores de manzanil la. Tapar y dejar reposar

por 10 minutos. No se recomienda el uso prolongado de ese remedio

ya que el hojas de sen pueden causar clicos intestinales.

Remedio para el estreimiento #24: Mezclar, en una taza de agua que

est caliente, una cucharada de linaza, media cucharada de miel y 4

gotas de aceite de oliva. Tapar, dejar reposar y tomar una taza

despus de la cena.

Remedio para el estreimiento #25: Verter en una licuadora,

previamente lavada y picada, 1 pera mediana, 1 banana mediana y 1

1/2 cucharadas de linaza cruda. Batir por unos instantes. Tomar un

vaso cada tercer da. Este remedio es muy eficaz ya que la linaza

es muy rica en fibra lo que facilita el proceso de eliminacin de

las heces.

Remedio para el estreimiento #26: Machacar los nervios centrales de

"I saw a silver-colored, triangular object with a red light at the

point, and two green lights midway down each side (they were

constant, unblinking lights). I think there were also lights at the

rear corners. Also on the shape was a silver line just 'inboard'

from the outer edge, in a V-shape mirroring the triangle itself (see

my really not very good drawing). As I passed under it, my car was

illuminated by the light coming off of it. I saw the underside of it

very clearly (though could no longer see the four bright, white

lights), and I dont think it couldve been more than 100 feet off

Design simplicity is the key for Windows 8, and Microsoft recently

discussed on its blog yet another popular Windows feature gett ing

streamlined in Windows 8: the task manager. The new task manager

echoes the design simplicity Microsoft was showing off earlier with

the new copy file dialog.

Microsoft says three goals guided development of the new task

manager, which is intended to appeal to non-techies and power users

alike. The company says it wants to create a task manager that is

optimized for common tasks (killing apps and processes), using a

modern and functional interface, but without cutt ing out the

favorite functions of power users.

For most users, the result is that Windows 8 won't inundate you with

a long list of unfriendly-looking processes like the task managers

in Vista and Windows 7. Instead, the new OS shows a simplified list

of programs that you can expand if you need to go beyond simply

killing an app.

A Simpler Task Manager

After studying user habits in Windows 7, Microsoft found that 85

percent of all task manager usage centers around the Applications

and Processes tabs. This discovery isn't that surprising since most

people use the task manager to simply kill off an application or

process that isn't responding.

of seeing a long list of information you don't need, all you'll see

when you open the Windows 8 task manager for the first t ime is a

simple list of apps. You'll see no tabs, no menu bar, no statistics

similar to Apple's interface for killing applications in OS X.

Microsoft has simplified the basic task manager so much that you

won't get a double prompt asking you if you're certain you want to

kill a process. If you select the "End Task" button in Windows 8,

the operating system will kill the process and the program will be

told to shut down. Microsoft warns you to be careful with the new

task manager, because Windows 8 won't prompt you to save your work

before shutting something down.

Details, Details

Power users looking for a more information on what's going on in

their system can still get it by clicking the "More details" button.

This will open up a more familiar tabbed view for the task manager,

but Microsoft has also made some important tweaks to this view as

well.

First, all processes are grouped by type, such as which application

they belong to, all background processes, or operating system

processes. As with other Windows groupings, you can click on the

left side of each app or process to expand the list and drill deeper

into what your system is running. This will let you see, for

example, how many Outlook windows are open or how many processes a

specific service is running in the background.

Microsoft is also highlighting right at the top of the detail view

percentages for CPU, memory, disk, and network usage. The top

indicator for each category shows your overall usage, and then

breaks it down by groups.

A heat map is also supplied to help you identify which applications

are sucking up your system resources. The more CPU or memory an app

uses, for example, the darker its statistics appear in the detail

view.

Process names are also friendlier, by using common names for

processes instead of cryptic terms such as "splwow64.exe." Did you

know that means "Printer driver host for applications"? I sure

didn't, but I will in Windows 8.

If adding friendlier names still doesn't help you understand why

your printer driver host is causing problems, Microsoft is adding a

"Search the Web" option when you right-click on a process. Clicking

the search option will open your default browser to a search results

page with information about the mystery process.

Microsoft has made some nice-looking improvements to the task

manager and simplified its view for those who don't need it. But

here's another interesting change: in the process of simplifying the

task manager, Microsoft adds an extra tab in the detail view

compared to Windows 7. How's that for simplification?

Diversos pensadores, desde los antiguos filsofos griegos hasta los

contemporneos que estudian cosmologa cuntica y la teora de la

inflacin csmica eterna han calificado al tiempo de ilusin.

Para ellos, la percepcin del paso del tiempo, la sensacin de estar

viviendo el presente, es un artificio de nuestra psicologa, de

verdadera atemporal y eternamente.

La creencia de que la realidad existe en una esfera intemporal de lo

verdadero y no en el flujo de los eventos que nuestra percepcin nos

refleja un prejuicio metafsico.

Los intentos contemporneos de extender la teora cuntica a lo

cosmolgico, para englobar a todo el Universo en vez de slo a uno

de sus subsistemas, a menudo estn encuadrados en ecuaciones que

sugieren que el tiempo emerge de una realidad atemporal.

Sin embargo, esos intentos adolecen de problemas, tanto tcnicos

como conceptuales, que son an ms difciles de resolver que los

Varios avances en el estudio de la gravedad cuntica han mostrado

que nuestro sistema cuadrimensional de espacio-tiempo slo se

recupera en una versin de la teora en la que el tiempo es real y

no emergente.

el t iempo no slo es real sino que es posible que sea el nico

aspecto de la realidad que experimentamos dirctamente que es

fundamental y no emergente de otra cosa.

Un ovni identificado por varios transentes y vecinos de la ciudad

de Miami como una verdadera nave interplanetaria, o

extraterrestre, fue avistado el verano pasado e incluso filmado

por videastas del sur de la Florida.

que prefirieron no ser identificadas, fue editado por el cineasta

Yasser Garca (Digimage Productions), aunque quienes filmaron

originalmente las dos tomas principales permaneceran en paradero

desconocido y an se desconocen sus nombres.

ha propuesto, en un documento de 41 pginas inspirado claramente en

la encclica "Caritas in veritate" del Papa Benedicto XVI (el alemn

Joseph Ratzinger), la creacin de una Autoridad Poltica y de un

Banco Central mundiales. El texto considera "surrealista" y

"anacrnico" que se mantenga con la globalizacin el orden

internacional nacido de la Paz de Westfalia (1648) , por lo que

aboga por que los Estados cedan de manera gradual parte de sus

soberanas a esas instituciones.

El Vaticano reclama que esta Autoridad Poltica y ese Banco Central

tengan "un horizonte planetario", no deben ser "impuestas por la

fuerza" sino ser "la expresin de un acuerdo libre y compartido"

entre pases en el marco de la Organizacin de Naciones Unidas

(ONU). Los Gobiernos nacionales "no debern servir

incondicionalmente a la autoridad mundial" sino que, por el

contrario, debe ser sta "la que se debe poner al servicio de todos

los pases miembros, segn el principio de subsidiariedad".

El objet ivo es "crear mercados eficientes y eficaces para que no

estn protegidos por polticas nacionales paternalistas", y promover

"una equitativa distribucin de la riqueza mundial" mediante "formas

inditas de solidaridad fiscal global".

El documento recuerda que la economa "necesita de la tica para su

correcto funcionamiento" y recuperar tambin "el primado de lo

espiritual y la tica", as como tasas sobre "las transacciones

financieras, "para contribuir "a la constitucin de una reserva

mundial y sostener las economas de los pases golpeadas por la

crisis". El Vaticano apoya as, sin citarla expresamente, la tasa

Y pide que se proceda a la reforma "del sistema monetario

internacional" para dar vida "a una forma de control monetario

global" porque el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) "ha perdido su

capacidad de garantizar la estabilidad financiera global". Tambin

condiciona la recapitalizacin de los bancos con fondos pblicos "a

comportamientos virtuosos y con el objetivo de desarrollar la

economa real".

El dicasterio del Vaticano argumenta que el liberalismo econmico

"sin reglas y sin controles" ha propiciado la existencia de mercados

del carguero

Los astronautas preparan el posible desalojo de la estacin espacial

Rusia pospone enviar astronautas a la estacin espacial por falta de

seguridad La ltima nave de carga Progress de este ao ha sido

lanzada con xito hacia la Estacin Espacial Internacional (ISS)

desde el cosmdromo de Baikonur, en Kazajistn, con ms de 2,5

toneladas de carga, entre ellos un microsatlite. "El lanzamiento se

produjo con xito", ha informado un portavoz del Centro de Control

de Vuelos espaciales, citado por la agencia rusa Interfax.

La nave se separ del cohete portador Soyuz-U nueve minutos ms

tarde e inici el vuelo en rgimen autnomo hasta la EEI, a la que

se acoplar el prximo 2 de noviembre a las 15.40 hora de Mosc

(11.40 GMT), precis la fuente.

La Progress M-13M es la primera nave de carga que llegar a la ISS

desde finales de junio pasado, toda vez que el carguero lanzado a

finales del pasado mes de agosto se estrell en Siberia poco despus

de haber despegado. Transporta al laboratorio orbital 2.648

kilogramos de carga, entre agua y alimentos, equipos cientficos,

oxgeno, material mdico y para la higiene de los cosmonautas. Entre

la carga hay un microsatlite Chibis-M, que ser puesto en rbita

una vez la Progress agote dentro de unos meses la misin que arranca

hoy y pueda llevar el aparato ruso hasta su rbita tras desacoplarse

de la ISS.

El Chibis-M, que entre su masa y los equipos cientficos alcanzar

un peso de apenas 52 kilogramos, estudiar las tormentas de rayos

con la peculiaridad de que ser la primera vez que este fenmeno

meteorolgico se investigue en distintos espectros de radiacin

electromagntica de manera simultnea.

Accidente en agosto

El de agosto fue el primer accidente en la historia de las Progress,

que se emplean desde 1978, y ocurri poco despus de que los

cargueros y las Soyuz rusas se convirtieran en el nico eslabn

entre la Tierra y la EEI, tras la jubilacin de los transbordadores

estadounidenses. Debido al accidente Rusia suspendi los

lanzamientos de los cohetes Soyuz y de los cohetes portadores Protn

y los bloques aceleradores Briz-M, reanudados a finales de

septiembre.

Roscosmos decidi lanzar el carguero antes que una Soyuz tripulada

para comprobar que se han tomado las medidas necesarias para

solucionar los problemas que causaron la destruccin de la Progress

M-12M.

Raro que ahora que es tan importante el sistema ruso de cohetes,

justo ahora falle uno de sus navios. Podria ser un sabotaje de

quienes se quedaron sin proyecto espacial- hay tanta plata en esto,
