were by no means serious abstanetes to their understanding of the Qur'an. The case of ambiguous
verses is an exception. For, the ambiguity of their meaning was recognized eve n in the time of the Prophet, without further efforts to comprehend them.
The main reason for emer~ence of the later voı\.1-minous commenta_ries is probably the attempt by th-~
human lntellect to find enswers in the Sacred Book to the problems of the different ages and different places. This seems even more probable when the his~orical account of different times are given due consideration in respect to contents of the commen
taries written in those times. Thus, in the fırst two centuries of Islam when linguistic studies were pop
ular, the commentaries written at the Se times usually · Aeal with the analysis of the grammatical structure of . J.he Qur'an, whereas in the lcı,ter centuries due to the · "development of theology and jurisprudeııce the ,.,_ .
.' :(;çımmentators .have tried to taekle theological and Judical issues in their b~oks. The interest and the specific field of the commentatar is anather factor in modifying his commentary. Thus, some philologists Ilke al-jassas, ai-Wahidi and AbCı Hayyan have tried
to interpret the text of the Qu r'an only from a linguistic point of view. Some other commentaries, Ilke thçıse of Tha'Jabi and • Ala'l ad-Din al Baghdadi are fuil of second-hand biblical stories. The sufıs j,~~.e in_terpreted the meaning of the Qur'an to their ~ste to the ex~end that they regard and expressian o.f-a concrete entity asa metaphor for a hidc!en ab

The commentaries on the Qur'an have alsa been roughly devided into two. 1) Traditional commentaries, 2) Ratio~ai commentaries. The traditional commentaries interpret the verses of the Qu~an in the light of the hadith s and the oç:casions of revelations. They usualiy do not deal with current problems. The commentaries of at at-Tabari and Ib n ai-Kathir can be given as examples fo( this branch of cohımentaries. The rational commentaries on the other hand

olduklan bazı ifadeler Kur'an'da geçmişse de bunlar, Kur'an'ı anlarnalarına ciddi bir engel değildi. Ta
Kur'an tefsiri alanında müşclhade edilen büyük inkişafın başlıca sebebi muhtemelen insan aklının değişik yer ve zamanlarda ortaya çıkan meselele re ilahi kitapta cevap aramasıdır.
Kur'an üzerinde yazılmış tatsirler kabaca ikiye 1
ayrılır: 1. Nakl e dayanan tefsirler,ll. Akla dayanan tef-sirler.

Anather allegation is that ar-Razi gave short and unsatisfactory answers to the elaborately related views of his opponents, especially the Mu'tazilities,
and by so doing he weekened the po~ition of the Sunnites. Presumably it was.ar-Razi's treatment of the Mu'tazilities that made lbn Taymlyya to accuse ·him of be ing a Mu'tazilite and having no belief in the
attributes of God. Dhahabi has gone further and said that ar-Raziwas sceptical about the fundamentals of Islam. He en~murates ar-Razi among weak muhaddiths. as-Subki rejects such an accusation simply by saying that ar-Razi w as not a muhaddlth and it was the irresponsible of ad·Dhahabi to put · him among the muhaddlths.
Anather allegation has arisen because one of his
book calfed which was regarded as a favourable exposition of magic. as-Subki denies the existence of such a book by ar· Jlazi, but recent researches have proved that this book was actually written by ar-Razi. However the
.~bntent of the book has not confirmed the alleg-ations of the critics. Moreover, if his views on magic in Ml!fatlh are closely examined, it woutd be understood that ar-Razi is not permitting the kin d of magic which is forbidden by lslam14l.
These allegations, especially those cariceming his commentary have be en m ade probably because of two basic reasons. One is the difficulty the reader meets in grasping the interpreter's own explanations '!f the verses, after going through the long discussions which -folfow each verse. The second is-the problem created by his linking together varied.elements from many different sources as explanations to the verses. This was not the case with the existing commentaries up to ar-Razi's time. Although az· Zamakhshari and Ab u Muslim-al- lsfahani had put many theological discussions into their commen ta-· ries, wh~ch are among the. sources ar-Razi used, they were by no means as verse~:tile and voluminous as Mafatih.ln order to give an encyclopedic ch aracter to his work, ar-R.azi recorded many theologicaJ and philosophical disputes from different soCırces. The titles of these sources ar~ usually given but sametimes omitted . .

Razi'nin kendine has tefsir metodu vardır.

To this can be added the tacı that after answering his opponEmts elaborately and extensively ata given time he simply gives brief referances to that answer when the same questions of the opponents are raised.
ar-Razi has got his owrı approach to the interpretation of the Qur'an. He is famous particularly for his ski ll in reconciling the isolated verses in the Qur'an. This is usually done by drawing different possible meaning from a single expression, or discovering some implicit links between the isolated verse. Thus, in his interpretation of the verse 2/189 which runs as:
"They ask the O Mu hammad of New Moons. Say; they are fixed seasons for man ki nd and for the pil
gimrage .. lt is not rightousness to go to houses by the backs thereof (as do the idolaters at certain seasons), but the rightous man is he who wardeth of (evil). So go to house s by the gates thereof.and observe your duty to Allah that we ~ay be success~~·
To reconcile the second part of this verse which seems to be out of relation to the first part, ar-Razi goes into metaphorical interpretation, \Vhereas almost all of the commentators have referred to the old arab customs. ar-Razi's solution is that the believers could not appreciate the hidden motives'in the variations in the Moon concerning its light, so they were suspicious of its benefits. In dciing so they followed a wrong approach for, the correct a~proach is to move from the known to the unknown, that is to compare the actions of God the benefits of which are not clear, with those actions whose partical benefits are obvious. Moreover, since all the actions of God are free from futility and ignorance, the variations in the Moon should be attached to God's wisdom without full acquantance of practical advantages. Therefare in ar-Razi's opinion the phrase "entering the houses from their back" is "the error of wrong reasoiıing", and has not to be un derstood at its face value<6>.
Razi, tefsirinde Kur'an üslübunun mucizevi özelliği üzerinde önemli açıklamalarda bulunur.
In this book he refutes the views of the Karramites and the Hanbelites on these verses.
As an Ash'arite scholar ar-Razi's aıtacts are main Iy directed against the Muctazilites and the Karramites. As the Karramites ·were strong in his time,
these critisizms by ar-Razi aroused the hatred and hostility of these people so much so that he was extradited from He rat where in an open discussion in the
presence of the Sultan he refuted and humilated the
head of the Karramites. lt has alsa been reported that he was poisened by them<12l·
Apar! from his disagrsement with the Mu'tazilites over the issues of the Divine attributes and Divine Justice, he is mainly critica! of Mu'~ilism concerning th.e theory of acqusition<13l. Unllke ai~Ash'ari ar·
Razi does not believe that man is abi e to do or to acquire an action. For, according to him man is not capable of taking initiative to prefe[ same actionto an., other. This initiative is created by Go d. Therefore arRazi seems to be in agreement with the Djabarites

A sign'ficant aspect of ar-Razi is his endeavor to
reconcile philosophy w ith Religion. However, this is
not due to his belief in the unity of truth as was the case with lbn Rushd, who was of the opinion that truth can be reached by either philo~ophy properly understood or scripture properly interpreted. ınstead ar-Razi believed in the superiority of revelation and recognized a limited field to refute the phi-

First lnteffect is the creation of multiplicity.!.' ~l.
ar·Razi's rejection of the theory held by the philosophers that Gad knows only universal facts bul not particulars is based on the judgement that being immaterial, Gad knows himself. For, all immaterial entities are capable of self·knowledge, and being
the cause of the created entities Gad knows the whole order of the created en Iili es by the same acı of self-knowledgeC17ı.
As to the philosophers claim that knowledge is the retleetion of the form of the knowable in the knower, theretare change and pluarity are inescapable on
the part of the knower ar-Razi dismisses such a the

Apart from these major points, ar-Razi is (!Iso at variance with the philosophers Of! many other questions which have soine relation to the principles of . . .. . . . .. . . . . . Faith in one way or another.
A towering figur~ in both religious and wordly sciences, ar-Razi remains to be explored by modern scholars .
