We welcome you this morning to Trinity Church, Capitol Square. If you are

visiting for the first time, or are looking for a church home, please fill out a pew card and give it to an usher or put it in the offering plate. The clergy and members of the congregation look forward to greeting you following the liturgy.

The First Sunday in Lent March 9, 2014

8:00 A.M. & 10:30 A.M. Holy Eucharist: Rite II

The Word of God In invitation to a Holy Lent Presider Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.

The Great Litany: Hymn S-67

(Service music, “S” numbered hymns, are found at the beginning of The Hymnal 1982) (The complete Great Litany text is found at BCP page 148)

Salutation and Collect of the Day Presider Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People God’s mercy endures for ever. Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Page 4: 1 Lent 3/9/14

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Peace Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.

The Holy Communion

All who hunger are welcomed at Christ’s Holy Table.

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer A (BCP page 361) Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. You bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Hymn S-130 Sanctus Schubert/Proulx

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The people remain standing. Presider Holy and gracious Father…

Page 5: 1 Lent 3/9/14

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Presider and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Presider continues: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father… As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Presider Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People Therefore let us keep the feast. Hymn S-164 Agnus Dei Schubert/Proulx Communion Anthem Introit (Requiem) Cherubini Postcommunion Chant Taizé

Blessed Strangers:

Gaining Appreciation for Different Faiths These conversations, concluding TODAY at 9:15 a.m. in the Parish library, have been intended to help us know how to share our Christian faith stories with our multi-faith neighbors, co-workers and friends. Seeing God's image in our neighbor is at the heart of our baptismal life as disciples of Jesus Christ, and this exploration into interreligious engagements will make us more aware of and more equipped to meet "beloved strangers" on our faith journeys. So, why not try this during late-Epiphany: Learn to hear the faith story of others, learn to tell your faith story, learn to treasure multi-faith encounters all more fully as we move "toward our mutual flourishing" together. The document “Toward Our Mutual Flourishing” is available for download as a PDF on our homepage: www.trinitycolumbus.org.

Scripture Study begins next Sunday at 9:15 a.m. During the Lenten Sunday morning liturgies, we will be hearing a Gospel reading and one lesson from either the Old or New Testaments. The third lesson appointed for the day, that we will not hear in the service, will be explored during Adult Formation class time each Sunday. Following are the lessons to be discussed:

March 16—Romans 4:1-5, 13-17 March 23—Exodus 17:1-7 March 30—Ephesians 5:8-14 April 6—Ezekiel 37:1-14 April 13—Philippians 2:5-11

LENTEN BOOK STUDY Date, Time & Place will be in announcements today! Karen Peeler and Jean Cotting would like to invite parishioners to join them in a Lenten study of Richard Rohr's book, FALLING UPWARD: A SPIRITUALITY FOR THE

TWO HALVES OF LIFE, beginning the first week of Lent, and continuing till Easter, April 20. Fr. Rohr is a Franciscan priest and founder of the Center for Action and Compassion in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is the author of numerous books and an internationally known speaker and journalist. In FALLING UPWARD (which comes with workbook) Fr. Rohr offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how our failings can be the foundation for our on-going spiritual growth. Drawing on the wisdom from time-honored sacred and secular texts, the author explores the two halves of life, and takes us on a journey to understand how the disappointments, heartbreaks, and losses of life actually are stepping

stones to the spiritual joys that the second half of life has in store for us. This will be a lay-led study and discussion. If you have questions or interest in being a part of this study group, please contact Karen Peeler (614-668-6271; [email protected]) or Jean Cotting (614-561-1488; [email protected])
