The field of civil engineering

• The civil engineering profession involves analysis,

planning, design, construction and maintenance of manytypes of facilities for government, commerce, industry, and the general public.

• The facilities include high-rise office towers, factories,

schools, housing, airports, tunnels and subway systems, dams, canals, water purification plants, and environmentalprotection facilities such as solid waste and wastewatertreatment systems.

• Civil engineers are concerned with the impact of theirprojects on the public and the environment, and theycoordinate the needs of society with technical andeconomic feasibility.

What is Civil Engineering?Civil !ngineering "C!# is a broad discipline that unifies a number of

aspects of engineering and sciences. Civil !ngineers wor$ in%

• Public Service: City, regional and national planning, operation andconstruction of highways, pipelines, air &uality, water treatment plantsand other public facilities.

• Private Practice: 'rivate practice through planning, designing, constructing and operating physical wor$s and facilities used by thepublic.

• Academia: Teaching students the fundamentals of engineering and

civil engineering applications, and conducting research that ta$esindustry to the ne(t level of product, design, and construction toimprove &uality of life.

• Other Discilines: Related fields, such as geology, hydrology,

engineering economics and engineering legal systems.Koshy arghese

A rofessional life in CE

•  )re you a person who enjoys problem solving and giving

action to your ideas*

•  )re you curious about how things wor$ and how to ma$ethem better*

•  )re you interested in improving the environment*

•  )re you socially aware and interested in helping peoplelive better*

Civil engineers share these qualities
