Objectives

Identify and discuss the users of water.

List the types of water pollutants.

Discuss ways to treat water for use.

Explain the importance of planning for

future water needs.

Why?

Why do we need to know about the hydrologic

cycle?

Why is water so important?

Why do we need to know about different types of

pollutants?

Why do we need to know how to treat water?

Why should we try to conserve water?

Terms

Water: a colorless, transparent, naturally occurring compound made of hydrogen and oxygen. (H2O)

Hydrologic cycle: The water cycle Groundwater: The water beneath the

surface of the earth, found in spaces between rocks and soil particles.

Surface Water: Water on the earth’s surface. (Lakes, ponds, and streams)

Terms

Runoff Water: Water that runs on the earth’s surface.

Potable Water: Water that is appropriate for human consumption without further purification or boiling.

Aquifer: An underground stream or pool in sand or gravel layers.

Watershed: An area of land from which all the water that does not infiltrate the sol runs to a downhill location.

Industrial uses of Water

Pollutants from industrial sources include: Asbestos –carcinogenic. mesothelioma, lung cancer, intestinal cancer

and liver cancer. Lead –can cause health and environmental problems. It is a non-

biodegradable substance so is hard to clean up Mercury –non-biodegradable substance so is hard to clean

up ,mercury poisoning. Nitrates – The increased use of fertilizers means that nitrates are

more often being washed from the soil and into rivers and lakes. can cause eutrophication,

Phosphates - The increased use of fertilizers means that phosphates are more often being washed from the soil and into rivers and lakes. This can cause eutrophication

Sulphur – This is a non-metallic substance that is harmful for marine life.

Oils – Oil does not dissolve in waterThis can stop marine plants receiving enough light for photosynthesis. It is also harmful for fish and marine birds.

Water Conservation

Don’t let water run while brushing teeth.

Taking showers instead of baths.

Using rain water for watering plants

instead of drinkable water.

Fix dripping or leaking pipes and faucets.
