Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the leader

of the Muslims, established a new

country called Pakistan.

Pakistan was located in the north-

Pakistan still exists today.

Immediately before partition, there had been extreme violence

between Muslims and Hindus.

10 million Hindus had to leave their homes in the new Pakistan.

Thousands of Muslims and Hindus were killed.

Gandhi spoke out against the killings.

In 1948, a Hindu extremist shot and killed Gandhi.

However, India had gained independence and full scale Civil

War between Hindus and Muslims had been avoided.
