Let’s go on a submarine journeyCan you imagine what the bottom of the sea is like? Is it like a great plain full of algae, or a valley covered in sand, like a desert? If you went on a journey beneath the surface of the seas and oceans, you would be able to see a fantastic landscape with mountains, valleys and ocean trenches so deep that the largest mountain in the world would fit inside it and there would still be some space left! In some places, you would find a lot of plants and animals, whereas in others, you wouldn’t even find a single fish! You might even find some treasure in a pirate ship!
A very restless seaThe sea cannot stay still… it never stops moving. You must have seen the waves crashing against the rocks and filling them with foam. In the sea, there are gigantic streams that travel slowly throughout the entire ocean in different directions: Streams of warm water and streams of cold water… that don’t mix together! The sea also likes climbing up the beaches: Have you ever watched how the seawater climbs up and floods everything? When the beach is flooded, it means that it is high tide and when it is dry it is low tide. The creatures that live on these beaches must be able to breathe inside and outside the water!
A good lookout: The cliffsThe cliffs are fantastic places for contemplating the sea. They are so high that if the water is clean, you can watch the fish swimming beneath the surface. And if you’re lucky, you might discover how the birds catch fish: They thrust their heads in the water and emerge with fish in their mouths. As their well-preened feathers act as a raincoat, they don’t even get slightly wet! Sea birds make use of the smallest cracks in the rock to make their nests. There are so many, that it is amazing that they don’t get their nests mixed up. But they always know which one is theirs and which chicks are theirs: They recognize them among hundreds.
