Madonna Louise Veronica CicconeBio graphy: Mado nna Lo uise Vero nica Cicco ne was born in Michigan in August 1958. She wasraised a Catho lic and was the third o f six children. As a child, she took ballet classesand after graduating high schoo l, she was o ffered a dance scho larship at the Universityo f Michigan. The young Mado nna later moved to New York to pursue a career in dance.Through her dance work, she made contacts in the music industry and began sendingout demos.

After catching the attention o f Sire Reco rds, she secured a recording contract andreleased her first single ‘Everybo dy’ in April 1982. An eponymous debut albumfo llowed and Mado nna gained a growing fan-base.

Mado nna went from US cult to worldwide phenomenon with the release o f her secondalbum, ‘Like A Virgin’. Her distinctive look started fashion crazes for lace gloves,leggings and chunky belt buckles. ‘Int o T he Gro o ve ’ became the biggest single fromthe album, with buoyed sales from its inclusion in her film ‘Desperat e ly SeekingSusan’.

In 1985, Mado nna met – and married – actor Sean Penn, to whom she dedicated hernext album ‘True Blue ’. Singles such as ‘Open Yo ur Heart ’, ‘La Isla Bo nit a’ and‘Papa Do n’t Preach’ cemented Mado nna’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with inpopular music.

After embarking on a hugely successful world tour and appearing in films ‘ ShanghaiSurprise ’ and ‘Who ’s T hat Girl?’ , Mado nna began work on her fo llow-up album‘Like A Prayer ’, which was released in 1989, the same year as her divorce to SeanPenn. She signed a deal with P e psi fo r $5m and the album’s title track made itsworldwide debut on the TV commercial. However, Pepsi was forced to pull the ad afterseeing the music video, which featured burning crosses and stigmata. This led theVat ican to urge Catho lics to boycott the star’s Blo nde Ambit io n t o ur .

Mado nna later courted more controversy over the release o f her sexually explicit book‘Sex’ which co incided with her fo llow-up album ‘Ero t ica’. Her success waned duringthe mid 90s. However, Mado nna won a Go lden Glo be in 1996 for her ro le in ‘ Evit a’and in 1998, she released her album ‘Ray o f Light ’ to much acclaim.

Her continuing success into the 21st century comes from releasing albums such as‘Music ’ and ‘Co nf essio ns o n a Dancef lo o r ’ and high-grossing world tours like‘Reinvent io n’ and ‘St icky & Sweet ’. No-one can deny that Madonna has left anindelible mark in music history and popular culture.
