The “Janeiras”

They are an old way of celebrating the New Year and epiphany, so, the populations get organized in groups that may have dozens of elements; they sing and cheer up their communities going from house to house (or placing themselves at a central spot). They are very often invited to go in the houses, where they are offered snacks, such as traditional cakes, grilled smoked sausages, red wine, and so on…

Crib from

the Algarve

Christmas festivals begin on the eighth of December, Virgin Mary’s day. Wheaten seeds, among others, are set in small earthen dishes to raise the “little corn fields” that will decorate the crib steps, together with oranges, dry fruits, flowers and small plants. Infant Jesus stays on top to bless them.
