Mapping and Visualization
Introduced by Jennie Murack
Basemaps•It is easy to add Basemaps to your map by clicking the “Add Data” button. Previously basemaps were added using File > Add Data From Resource Center.
•Basemaps are updated regularly and include maps from Open Street Map and Bing Maps.
Example Basemaps from ESRI
DockingAll windows can be docked to any side of the screen and pinned to the side of the display as a tab.
Catalog Window
The catalog window can be displayed in ArcMap, making it easier to browse data or drag it to the map.
Map Packages
•A map package contains a map document (.mxd) and the data referenced by the layers it contains, packaged into one convenient, portable file.
Example uses:• package all files associated with your project so they are portable for use on multiple computers.
• make it easy to share complete map documents with others
• create an archive of a particular map that contains a snapshot of the current state of the data used in the map.
•Data can be read by ArcGIS or extracted/unzipped from a .mpk with a tool like 7zip
Map Package example
ma_towns.dbfma_towns.prjma_towns.sbnma_towns.sbxma_towns.shpma_towns.shp.xmlma_towns.shxMassachusettsTowns.mxd
MA_Towns.mpk
Find at: File -> Create Map Package
New selection tools
You can select areas on the map using shapes other than rectangles, such as polygons, lassos, circles and lines.
Data Management
Introduced by Heather McCann
Tables• Tables open in multiple tabs on same window
Tables
Field Calculator• Use VB script or Python. VBA is no longer supported.
Validate joins before executing
Editing a shapefile• Launch edit mode via Edit toolbar or by right clicking on a layer
Projections and coordinate systems• ArcMap 10 adds new definitions for datum transformations and coordinate systems• Software now supports the Berghaus Star projection

Metadata
• ArcCatalog is listed as a tab on the side of the ArcMapinterface, allowing you to access the metadata with one click.
• A new screen called the item description gives easy access to the title, summary, description, tags and credits for the data layer, plus a preview thumbnail of the dataset
Geoprocessing and Analysis
Introduced by Anne Graham
GeoProcessing Tools
How to find tools: • Search using the Search window.
• Browse using the Catalogor ArcToolbox window.
• On menus and toolbars (add tools to any menu or toolbar)
Background Processing
• Geoprocessing in background
• You continue working with the application (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene or ArcGlobe)
Python
• ArcGIS installs Python version 2.6.•Python window replaces Command Line window.
New and improved tools
• Analysis toolbox• Cartography toolbox• Conversion toolbox• Data Management toolbox• Editing toolbox (New)• Geocoding toolbox
ModelBuilder
ArcGIS Extensions and more
Introduced by Lisa Sweeney
Themes: – Enhancements with 3D– Simplifying toolbars/ enhancing ArcToolbox– Increased number of file formats supported
Image Classification
3D editing
ArcGlobe and ArcScene editing tools enable the creation and maintenance of z-aware GIS features
Includes options: parallel, perpendicular, duplicate vertical, and absolute XYZ

geoprocessing tools enhanced to work better with 3D– Select by Location dialog box uses 3D distances– multipatch objects can participate in the Line Of Sight
tool.
interactively measure in 3D: – distance along a surface– height of 3D object– distance between two points in 3D
Support for 3D connectivity has been added to networkdatasets.
Toolbars for Spatial Analyst and 3D analyst simplified.
