Each person has an invisible space around their body into which other people may not come. If someone comes into this space, they will feel uncomfortable and move away to increase the distance between them. (The major exception is family members and other loved ones.)

Interestingly, the average personal distance varies from culture to culture. Americans tend to need more personal space than in other cultures. So if you try to get too close to an American during your conversation, he or she will feel that you are "in their face" and will try to back off.

Also, try to avoid physical contact while you are speaking, since this may also lead to discomfort. So don't put your arm around their shoulder, touch their face, or hold their hand. However, shaking hands when you first meet or part is acceptable.

Body language means eye contacts, gestures, facial expressions, postures, and movements of the body by which people communicate with each other.

Why is it very important and helpful to watch the speaker and have eye contact with him when he is talking?

Is it the same when you are in class?

Assignments:

1. Read the passage aloud for some times.

2. Make a summery of what you have learned in this class and get ready to introduce a unique body language.

3. Read the introduction of personal space and retell it in your own words. (alternative to task 1 if not done in class)

4. Read, copy and recite the new vocabulary in additional reading and get ready for a dictation.

5. Finish exercise 2 after the additional reading passage.
