COURSE DESCRIPTION GOAL:To investigate what we are and where we come from

so we might determine where we are headedOUTLINE:1. Introduction 5. Post Cold War2. WWI/Current events 6. United Nations3. WWII/Current events4. Cold War/Current events

The focus of the units is to look at the causes of past conflicts/problems/issues, and to study attempts to either resolve the ones that are with us and avoid them in the future

COMPETENCIES AND THEMES There are 2 competencies:

1: Interprets Contemporary World Problems

2: Takes a position on Contemporary World Issues

Each is valued at 50%, both are evaluated each term

There are 5 themes (Orange handout):

Power, Wealth, Conflict, Environment, Population

EVALUATION (PURPLE HANDOUT)

Homework and Participation ( up to 20%) Write, investigate, answer questions, read

Quizzes (up to 30%) Surprise quizzes on homework assigned or recent classes taught

Unit tests (20-50%) One test per unit Terms, short answer, maps, visual media, essay

Major projects (30-80%) Research papers, simulations, debates, negotiations, United
