Massachusetts eHealth Institute at MassTech (MeHI) announced iHub as one of three

leading healthcare R&D hubs to join the Digital Health Sandbox Network. The Digital

Health Sandbox Program aims to boost digital health across the Commonwealth by

connecting companies to innovative test beds that will bolster the research and

development lifecycle.

Governor’s Digital Health Council

The Digital Health Council advises the Governor regarding the digital health

industry, and developed a report identifying eight near-term priority initiative

recommendations:

• Establish a pre-eminent conference around digital

health in MA

• Support the growth and success of MassChallenge

HealthTech

• Provide a centralized web portal for digital health

resources

• Create sandbox environments

• Create a Hacker Hospital

• Establish a Cybersecurity Group of Experts

• Create a Distributed Data Network

• Develop uniform Data Use Agreements

Independent Steering

Committee (ISC):

• Reviews applications based on

established criteria

• Makes recommendation for grant

coverage and sandbox matching

MeHI team:

Evaluation Criteria

• Feasibility of proposed project including:

– Technical merit

– Economic viability

– Uniqueness of company or product in the digital health ecosystem

• Potential impact of the project including:

– Impact of the project on the company

– Impact of the project on expanding and strengthening the state’s economy

– Impact of the project on patients’ lives

• Projects addressing the following areas will receive preference:

– Cybersecurity and privacy issues

– Cost or access challenges identified by the Health Policy Commission or other public bodies

– Workflow for new technologies in home or hospital settings (e.g. wearables or consumer apps)

– Collaboration with academic researchers to increase the evidence base for digital health solutions
