Frameworks of Interpretation

The above is an example of a film that divided critics and audiences; showing that we all view films differently. We can view films differently because of our ‘frameworks of interpretation’.

A film audience is made up of individuals who all read and interpret films

differently from each other.

What makes us individuals is a range of things that could be considered our

frameworks of interpretation.

Factors such as age, class, ethnicity, education and past experiences will all have some bearing on the way people read and interpret a film.

Do you agree?

Task: In your group compile a small case study on some films that people could

‘interpret’ differently depending on their background. You can also research some real life cases. Perhaps a film offended someone’s religious beliefs.
