TRANSITION WORDS AND CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

The steps in a process are usually listed in the order that they occur in time.Time phrases, time clauses, and time words are used to show time order in the process. These are called transition words because they mark the transition from one step to another. Most of them are followed by a comma.Study the time/transition words from the paragraph in Practice Exercise 1.

Practice 1Read and study the paragraph about the steps involved in applying to an American university, then answer the questions below.

Applying to an American University Applying to an American university is not complicated, but it is important to follow each step. The first step is to choose several schools that you are interested in attending. Next, write to these schools to ask for information, catalogues, and applications. You may also want to visit the schools’ websites. After you have researched several schools, focus on three to five. Then mail all the required forms and documents to these three to five schools. If the school of your choice requires that you take a standardized test such as the ACT or TOEFL, be sure to do so early. In addition, ask various school officials and teachers to write letters of recommendation for you if the university requires them. Finally, almost all schools have an application fee. This should be sent in the form of a check or money order. One last piece of advice is to start early because thousands of high school students are all applying at the same time.

1. According to the information in this paragraph, how many steps are there? 2. Which two steps might be optional? Write them all.3.Do you remember the steps to apply to a UADY University?... Write a paragraph about it.

When you tell a story, it’s better to describe the events in the order they happened. We show time order by using transition words.

First,… Second,… Then,… Next,… After that,… Finally,…

I remember my first visit to the dentist. I was chewing gum when I felt a terrible pain; I had a toothache. First, I told my mom; second, she decided to take me to the dentist. Then, I got into the car and my mom drove as fast as possible. When we arrived, the dentist said it was probably a cavity and that wouldn’t hurt. I felt happy because of that, but next I was crying! After that he healed my tooth and finally I could go back home with no pain at all.
