NCTE established in 1998 as an agency of the Department of Education and Science to implement
ICT policy objectives
The core objective of the NCTE is to promote and support the use of ICT by teachers and students in
teaching and learning.

ICT Professional Development (TSI)
Objective
To provide a national programme of ICT professional development for first and second level teachers to assist them in integrating ICT in learning and teaching.

Objectives• Maintain, develop and promote Scoilnet as the portal for Irish
education, to establish it as the online starting point for school and home users to access and generate e-content, and participate in e-communities.
• Provide access to an increased quantity of relevant online content for the Irish curriculum.
• Support and promote the safe use, application of the Internet in the classroom.

2. Manage and maintain the NCTE website – the website provides access to current information and advice on ICT in education for use by schools and all education partners including a monthly newsletter by email to all schools
3. Internet Safety advice and guidelines to Irish schools – Be Wise on the Net campaign, Webwise the National Node, EC funded research projects created awareness, and tools under the Safer Internet programme
4. Develop and engage in projects which promote and stimulate the educational use of the Internet – projects undertaken to further the use of online content or service. Subject Associations; Education Centres; History In-service; Geography In-service; CAO; French.ie

Digital Content & Software

1. Develop Software Central to provide relevant advice to teachers on how to use software effectively in teaching and learning e.g. Software Evaluations ; Projects
2. Develop and support the implementation of software libraries in education centres
3. Assist in the development and promotion of software workshops focusing on the use of software in teaching and learning
4. Negotiate software licensing deals and structures for schools e.g. Star Office
5. Explore models for the development of curricular relevant content e.g. Library Council
6. Establish strategic partnerships with industry and other relevant agencies in the development of digital content e.g. RTÉ ; PCSP;NCCA; INTEL

Special Educational Needs (SEN) & ICT
Objective• to support the inclusion of SEN in all NCTE initiatives and to
undertake activities targeted at SEN
Activities/Outputs1. Provision of advice and support for teachers on ICT and its use in
the classroom (note: capital funds targeted SEN): – web-based info, advice and resources (NCTE website)– hard copy publications (e.g. special needs information and
advice book– Dyslexia DVD in cooperation with DES – via other NCTE initiatives, e.g. software evaluations
