Hashtags

Understanding #• If you tweet with a hashtag on a public account,

anyone who does a search for that hashtag may find your tweet

• Hashtags can occur anywhere in the tweet

• Clicking on a hashtagged word in any tweet shows you all other tweets marked with that keyword

• Don’t #spam #with #hashtags

• Use hashtags only on tweets relevant to the topic

Some Basics of Tweeting

• Reply

• Mention

• Retweets

• Direct Message

@reply

• What is an @reply?

• An @reply is any update posted by clicking the Reply button on a tweet

• @reply to you will show up on your mentions tab

• Click on @reply to display the tweet that was replied to

@mention• What is an @mention?

• Any Twitter update that contains @username (replies are considered mentions)

• These messages, as well as @replies are collected in the Mentions tab on the Connect page

• More than one person can be mentioned in a tweet

Retweets

• What is a retweet?

• re-posting of someone else’s Tweet

• Sometimes people type RT at the beginning of a Tweet to indicate they are reposting someone else’s Tweet

• Retweeting is sort of like a compliment

Direct Message

• What is a DM?

• A private message sent via Twitter to one of your followers. (you can only send to followers)

• Click on the envelope icon to access

• Interactive live conversation at a specific time on Twitter about a specific topic
