Does Leadership matter in organisation? Yes
A range of studies* (using various methodologies) found:
• Consistent relationship between “who is in charge” and how the organisation performs
• Changes in leadership lead to changes in performance
• Statistical analysis suggests that leadership is responsible for 15 – 45% of a firm’s performance

Three major arguments against the importance of leadership :
1. Substitutes exist for leadership
2. Leaders can be irrelevant; people lead themselves and outside influences can overwhelm
3. Organisational systems are far too complex to attribute success to leadership
