TODAY

• Get out you ESRT and a piece of paper

• The following questions are from your ESRT.

• You’ll have a minute per question…

Question 1

• What is the Latitude and Longitude of the Tasman hot spot?

Question 2

• What is the Latitude and Longitude to nearest minute of Riverhead, NY?

Question 3

• What is the temperature in the Stiffer mantle?

Question 4

• What is the density of the crust (2 of them)?

Answers• What is the Latitude and Longitude of

the Tasman hot spot?– 40oS 160oE

• What is the Latitude and Longitude to nearest minute of Riverhead, NY?

• 40o55’N 72o45’W

• What is the temperature in the Stiffer mantle?– 2500-5000oC

• What is the density of the crust (2 of them)?– 2.7 g/mL and 3.0 g/mL

Gradient and profile

Gradient

• Gradient – the amount of slope or how steep the “relief” is.

• Lines that are close together means the gradient is high or steep. If your measuring elevations the hill will be steep.– If your measuring pressure the wind will be great.

Look at this map

• Where is the steepest slope?

• Would you want to walk from the top left to the ocean or bottom right to the ocean?

Calculating Gradient

• Formula: Change in field value / Distance– Units jivisity– Ft/mi or m/km usually

• What is the gradient between A & C?

• What is the gradientbetween F & E?

• Try it Gradient of A-B:

• Try it Gradient of C-D:

Topographic profiling• Profile

– The cross-sectional (side view) of a map.– On the right is the front view of a face.– On the left is the profile of a face.

– Bottom is the map view (top view)– Top is profile view

How do we make a topographic Profile?

• Start with the map view, – Put a piece of paper along the line to create a

profile. Here A-A’ is our line.

• Label ALL isolines on the map along the line.• Next, mark everywhere a line crosses that line and hits the

paper.

• Then label each isolines value on the paper with the marks.

• Now take that paper with the marks on it and put it just below of the grid that is given.

• Now transfer the points from the paper to the grid, Accurately!
