Gradient and profile

Page 8: TODAY Get out you ESRT and a piece of paper The following questions are from your ESRT. You’ll have a minute per question…

Gradient

• Gradient – the amount of slope or how steep the “relief” is.

• Lines that are close together means the gradient is high or steep. If your measuring elevations the hill will be steep.– If your measuring pressure the wind will be great.

Page 9: TODAY Get out you ESRT and a piece of paper The following questions are from your ESRT. You’ll have a minute per question…

Look at this map

• Where is the steepest slope?

• Would you want to walk from the top left to the ocean or bottom right to the ocean?

Calculating Gradient

• Formula: Change in field value / Distance– Units jivisity– Ft/mi or m/km usually

• What is the gradient between A & C?

• What is the gradientbetween F & E?

Topographic profiling• Profile

– The cross-sectional (side view) of a map.– On the right is the front view of a face.– On the left is the profile of a face.

– Bottom is the map view (top view)– Top is profile view

Page 13: TODAY Get out you ESRT and a piece of paper The following questions are from your ESRT. You’ll have a minute per question…

How do we make a topographic Profile?

• Start with the map view, – Put a piece of paper along the line to create a

profile. Here A-A’ is our line.

Page 14: TODAY Get out you ESRT and a piece of paper The following questions are from your ESRT. You’ll have a minute per question…

• Label ALL isolines on the map along the line.• Next, mark everywhere a line crosses that line and hits the

paper.

• Then label each isolines value on the paper with the marks.
