Installation Art is a creative tool for free expression, by which the youth is empowered to articulate their concerns and to place their issues on the public agenda, a key element for democracy.

Duchamp, Marcel
1887-1968, French painter, brother of Raymond Duchamp-Villon and half-brother of Jacques Villon . Duchamp is noted for his cubist-futurist painting Nude Descending a Staircase, depicting continuous action with a series of overlapping figures; it was the cause of great controversy when exhibited in 1913 at the New York Armory Show . Duchamp invented ready-mades—commonplace objects—e.g., the urinal entitled Fountain, which he exhibited as works of art. In 1915 he was a co-founder of a Dada group in New York. After 1920, Duchamp produced a series of elaborate nonfunctional machines. He emigrated to the United States in 1942. Many of his works, including the celebrated symbolic construction The Bride stripped bare by her Bachelors, even (1915-23), are at the Philadelphia Mus. of Art.

Donald Judd
This sculpture from the series “Stacks”, consist of a vertical arrangement of identical rectangular boxes, attached to the wall at right angles in a mathematical sequence. It demonstrates Judd simplification of shapes, volume, color and surface, and reduces art to its basic essentials: the cube. All his pieces were called untitled and were as plain as possible, because he believed that a work of art should be looked at as a whole, not as a collection of parts. In addition to sculpture, Judd designed his own furniture and designed and built several houses.
To view NAT GOODDEN’s untitled 1990 installation at Matt’s Gallery, London, the spectator climbed a temporary staircase to a platform at the top of the gallery. A gallery-sized geometric grid had been placed from wall to wall. The grid was made from ordinary wooden doors which had been carved out to form a bowl-shaped cavity.

The Reign of Narcissism by BARBARA BLOOM is shown at the Serpentine Gallery, London, 1990. Most of the objects in the fictional museum room bore the image of the artist: plaques, busts, cameos, etc. The museum shop sold Bloom’s limited edition chocolates, champagne and postage stamps.

This stitched felt suit expresses the idea oh human physical warmth. It symbolizes and evokes a sense of safety and shelter because felt is an insulation and life-protection fabric. Beuys was at one stage connected with fluxus, a movement dedicated to organizing anarchistic events and “happenings”, and this suit was copied from one he wore in 1971 in an unti-Vinam event.
Beuys considered art as a medium for social and political change. He also saw it as having a spiritual dimensions, and believed that commonplace materials (felt and animal fat were among his favorites) could be invested with an intense healing power. He saw the role of the artist as parallel to that of the shaman, channeling energy from objects and giving them new powers and new meanings.
ILYA UTKIN in (Forum of a Thousand Trusts) featured 16 columns covered in Xeroxed notes, sketches and tear-off phone numbers.
