It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.
Charles Dickens
March comes in big, like a lion, and its roars
bring sudden big blooms of periwinkle and
fuchsia. The azaleas color our world in
the South, they hang in there while were
predicting when the next cold front will
arrive, or can we call this spring yet? We
bundle up in chilly mornings and shed layers
throughout the day as the mercury rises in
the afternoon hours. Time to think about
that pedicure and open-toed shoes, time to
drive home with the sunroof open, time for
the pollen and breezy afternoons when the
wind whispers, Spring has sprung. This is
the big time when the summer heat is still
weeks away and we can walk the streets
without breaking a sweat, stop and pause
long enough to see the time lapse of leaves
budding on bare trees. The soothsayers
warning to Julius Caesar, Beware the Ides
of March, in Shakespeares tragedy imbued
that date with a sense of foreboding, but its
just the 15th on the Roman calendar and we
prefer to celebrate it as the Romans did
by indulging in wine, song and celebration.
This is a time of good hair days, wind whip-
ping our skirts, evenings just chilly enough
for a light sweater, time for outdoors, for
new buds turned blooms, the bright sky
that reminds us of how small we are in this
big old world, and the brand new green
grass thats made for lying on your back and
looking for shapes in clouds chugging by as
the world keeps turning, turning, turning.

At skirt!, we always loved big. We are big...we have published for more than 20 years on big paper, with big layouts, big features, big products, and
big personalities. Weve had the honor of watching small startups become
big companies. Weve watched female entrepreneurs become an office of
six women, much like our own startup story back in 1994. We talk a lot
about appreciating the small things in life, about paying attention to the
wind in the trees, stopping to smell the flowers, slowing down; but with this
issue we wanted to celebrate the big things that make life so wonderful.
This issue is full of big ideas, big dreams, and big happiness. The funny thing
about the big picture is that you can pull back and frame your life in the
larger perspective, and it makes the little struggles
seem so small. As Kurt Vonneguts character
Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse Five said when he
saw the big picture of his own tumultuous life,
everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.
Dream big, readers. Everything is beautiful,
the obstacles become so small, and we can
reach from here to the moon with just one
good, big idea. We hope this issue inspires you
to take big leaps!

Dear BIG To Go
Gods: We
understand youre
under a lot of scrutiny
these days. But we
just have a few things we would
like to chat about:
The problem is when that fun stuff becomes the habit.
And I think thats whats happened in our culture.
Fast food has become the everyday meal.
Michelle Obama
26 marchw2015 skirt!magazine
Can we go back to small, medium, and
large? Were confused by (and frankly a little
scared of) Super, Mega, Extra Grande, Trenta,
Extreme and Value-sizedwhen big just
cant quite cut it.
We feel pretty virtuous when we pick up dinner
from Subways Fresh Fit Choices (paired with
apples and water instead of chips and soda), but
we hate it when we forget to ask you to put
the mayo on the side. That little dollop of mayo
(which looks to be about 4 tablespoons) adds
almost two chocolate chip cookies to our order
of the healthy veggie sandwich.
What is with the volume of liquids that are
being offered these days? We thought it couldnt
get any more out of control and then 7-11 had
to bring in the Big Gulp that holds 200% more
liquid than the average human stomach. Always
a good workout for our lifetime practice of
stretching our stomachs. And by the way, where
are the Small Gulps or even the Medium Gulps?
A special thank you to McDonalds for
offering an alternative to our usual breakfast
of fresh fruit and Greek Yogurt with the
McDonalds Big Breakfast with hotcakes, a
large biscuit, hashbrowns, eggs and sausage.
Because really, who needs breakfast when you
can have a buffet?
Our top award goes to fast food burgers. Instead
of making the burgers bigger, you just pile
patties on top of each other. Burger King Triple
Whopper with cheese, we see youTHREE
lb. patties (yes, thats almost a full pound of
meat), 82 grams of fat, and 1,230 calories. Youd
have to have the metabolism of a hummingbird
to burn that off!
Overall, kudos to the fast food marketing
teams. We wonder what would happen if you
used words like enormous, gigantic, hefty,
massive, or excessive, when labeling your
foods. How about the Barn Door Burger...
now thats a description we can understand.
So, if you could work on that so we could get
our obesity numbers down and perhaps solve
the problem of fair wages, wed say cheers. And
raise our bottle of water to you. Well keep the
zero calories around.

Iris Dorbian Yes, Im Aging. So What?
Iris Dorbian is a business journalist/blogger who resides in the greater New York City area. Her articles have appeared in a wide variety of outlets that include the Wall Street
Journal, Reuters, CFO.com, DMNews, Media Industry Newsletter and Playbill. She is the author of Great Producers: Visionaries of the American Theater (Allworth Press/Skyhorse).
have a dire confession to make: Im aging.Yes, indeed. The ravages of time are absolutely, categorically
and unequivocally rearing themselves on my face, hair and body. And no matter how often I dye the grey out of my hair, fill the marionette lines around my lips with Juvederm or cover my increasingly wizened neck with a scarf or turtleneck, the cosmetic conceits soon ebb, revealed to be the transitory fixes they truly are.
Honestly, I had no huge issue about agingthat is, until I was recently on the receiving end of a loaded question, which could have been innocuous (although I didnt take it as such as the time it was posed to me) and a remark that clearly wasnt. I thought as long as I took care of myself, aging would be a breeze. Maybe Id be lucky and no one would notice. Ha!
The first instance came when a former male co-worker/friend whom I hadnt seen in a few years asked me point blank in a text the day after we met over coffee how old I was. I was baffled by the question considering I had known him for a long while and thought he probably knew. When I tried to joke my way out of it, he persisted, even approximating an age that he thought I probably was.
His conjecture was correct.I thought so, he texted back, when I finally admitted that
I was most definitely eligible to join AARP. Radio silence on his part descended afterwards. (FYI, hes only a few years younger than I.)
What made his question about my age especially hurtful, even if he hadnt intended to fire a verbal dart at me, was that prior to my seeing him I had just come from my graduate school reunion, feeling really good about myself. Not only did I reconnect with a few old classmates but I was looking especially pulled together. Or so I thought.
My hair, newly re-touched and perfectly blown dried, had not a grey in sight. The nascent lines that were starting to groove around my mouth had been temporarily banished thanks to cosmetic fillers. My teeth were whitened due to dental bleaching and the flurry of whiteheads that dotted my
forehead, as well as a nasty little wart near the bridge of my nose, were obliterated courtesy of the skillful local dermatologist. I was prepared to go to my reunion and impress.
I basked in that afterglow; then my erstwhile associate threw that question, like a cyber-gauntlet, at me. Throwing down my iPhone, I felt humiliated, my ego flattened into smithereens. So much for all that tweaking to keep the obvious signs of aging at bay.
But even if I am aging, which, of course, I am, so what? Its not like I committed a cardinal offense. I didnt murder or molest anyone. Im just getting older. You would think, having had friends who died young (and relatives whose lives were cut short in the Holocaust) that some might consider the act of getting older to be a gift. I guess not.
Another instance that for me highlighted the disdain our culture, especially women, have about aging, was when a friend of my mothers, who is notorious for speaking without any filter, reprimanded me for looking really old. And because of this unacceptable breach, I had lost my looks, she added.
The catalyst for her outburst was my slim frame (which Ive had most of my life) and which she felt was the root cause of my appearing Jurassic. (Incidentally, the woman is older than me and about 50 pounds heavier.) Infuriated by her flagrant lack of couth and sensitivity, I let her have it and have not spoken to her since.
Later on, I wondered, was it really my slightness that set off the proverbial mean girl in my mothers friend? Or is it because Im
obviously aging and in seeing that in me, someone who is younger than her, she is only too sadly and odiously reminded
that time wont pass her by either? The aversion we have to aging is an unfortunate corollary
to our singular obsession with youth. Seriously, do we really want to be 21 forever? When I was that age, my daily almanac was comprised of unending bad decisions made in the full flush of callow ignorance. Clearly youth is overrated.
Oh sure, there wasnt a crease on my face or any pestilent grey growing unimpeded in my hair. Plus, my ability to stay up until 5 a.m. every day was unparalleled.
Yet I was also very unwise and ignorant when it came to functioning like a responsible,
sensible adult. Now Im not. Why is experience-based wisdom considered so expendable when juxtaposed with glossily youthful stupidity? Is it because as we get older we get closer to another taboodeath? I think so.
Bette Davis once said getting older isnt for sissies. She was right but that
adage doesnt make it any easier when confronted with age bullies.
Similarly, my grandmother used to say (translated from Yiddish): If you dont want to get older, hang yourself when youre young.
No one is immune to the effects of Mother Time. Consider it a present for having lived a few decades and give me a break. Let me age in peace.
I But even if I am aging,
which, of course, I am, so what? ...You would think, having had
friends who died young (and relatives whose lives were cut short in the Holocaust) that some
might consider the act of getting older to be a gift.
I guess not.
Seriously, do we really want to
be 21 forever?

The CofC grad and Charleston native has always been passionate about entrepreneurship. Her background includes work with the Charleston
Digital Corridor and Dig South. Her experience helped her understand that entrepreneurs are essential to economic development, as they produce
60-70% of jobs created and in turn create an abundance of wealth in our community. A few years ago, she began working with her mentor and
Founder of YEScarolina, Jimmy Bailey, who she calls the man with the big idea to bring this program to Charleston. She signed on as Vice President
and has been working diligently to raise funds for YEScarolinas programs ever since. Both students pictured [Aquila Brown and Jesse Horine] are
kids from our program who both made it to the nationals for the business competition, two out of the top 40 in the country, says Harriett with
pride. The reward for me is seeing kids in these programs gain confidence and see how excited they get when they understand they can create
their own business. And with entrepreneurship being the post-recession business model, these programs are more important than ever to bring
jobs to our city. The new economy is in the hands of the next generation. The orgs 5th annual gala raised $325,000 for programs last year; their
goal is $500,000 for the 6th annual, so mark your calendars for October 22. Sponsors are needed, as well as donations.

Kari and Liz made big business out of big clutter.
Two neighbors raising six kids, two dogs, one cat and two husbands in the suburbs, lived just two doors down from each other. Between them,
they have eight years of combined organizational experience in a variety of fields, and in 2013, the duo came up with the brilliant idea to merge
their skills and create a business to help people master the art of simple living. A Simple Nest was born. Kari Kim and Liz Ryan now work full-
time to help people reduce and repurpose to clear the clutter. People get very attached to stuff for a variety of reasons, says Kari. Our goal
is to simplify rather than organize. Its one way of letting our clients actually use the things they love so they can use them every day. They also
encourage clients to donate to charities, hold estate sales, and so on. People tend to feel better knowing the things they dont need are going
to people who do need them. The only rule? Their clients cannot shop for new items until they have completed the work. Says the pair, Our
mission to help simplify our clients nests so that they can live a more simple and joyful life inspires us to walk the walk. We joke that one day
we will be sitting in an empty room with five chairs, spoons, plates and glasses and that is all that will be left.
More info on decluttering your living space (check out their blog!) at ASimpleNest.com.

The 24-year-old native of Charleston and 2012 graduate of Furman University has had an illustrious career for his age. Seth Gilliard is known
as Seth G. and comparisons to Kenny G dont bother him at all. My father is a huge jazz fan and Kenny was one of the first jazz musicians to
break into the mainstream, says Seth. My parents were extremely supportive of my interest in music. With a background that includes a stint
as concertmaster of the Furman Symphony Orchestra and a soloist for the Anderson and Charleston Symphony Orchestras, Seth first picked up
a violin at Ashley River Creative Arts School and his classical training continued through private lessons in high school. Alongside his classical and
jazz experience, Seth now has a budding career as a contemporary violinist, releasing a mixtape of his most popular covers and an EP of original
pop songs. He is currently working on another mixtape as well as his debut album. This year is his second as CSO Artist in Residence and he loves
giving presentations at local schools to introduce young students to contemporary classical music.

really had no intention of bursting into tears in the drive-through that rainy November evening. Honestly. I was just picking up some take-out for school spirit night at our local Chick-fil-A. But it had been a long day. Work was an endless mass of papers to grade, the kids had been bickering all afternoon, my husband wouldnt be home from his night class for several more hours, and I had a headache. Again.
From the backseat, my daughters were heatedly discussing the rightful ownership of a toy that had been rolling around in the floorboard all week and my four-year-old son was trying to weigh in on the matter, loudly interjecting Mine! or Not its not! whenever he felt there was a lag in the conversation. I turned on the radio, hoping a musical interlude would divert their attention away from their proprietary debate. No such luck, I thought as the broadcast station launched into a news report.
Next up, the announcer began, a new video shows how 50 people responded to just one question: If you could change one thing about your body, what would it be? Im pretty sure I laughed out loud. What would I change about my body? Just one thing?
Let me count the ways: Eyes. Hands. Horsey smile. Hips like the Himalayas. Stomach, stomach, stomach. The unabridged catalog of my nominees for bodily imperfection is long and all-encompassing. In fact, Id be doing well to limit them to just the categories of form and function.
This question was especially sensitive for me coming as it was at a time when not only I had been experiencing a myriad of health problems but was also still in the midst of what I call my accordion yearsthe better part of a decade when my body was in a continual state of flux, ever expanding and contracting to accommodate the carrying and birthing of my three wonderful children, who were then so spiritedly populating the backseat of the car.
As the radio announcer rolled the audio track, it quickly became clear that I was not the only one with an index of insecurities. The adult participants for this interview project
were all quick to reveal at least one area of dissatisfaction. Listening to their responses, I could feel my throat closing up a little more with the airing of each grievance, an array of perceived flaws, head to toe.
What would adults change about their bodies if they could? My ears. Id like to be taller. My skin. My forehead. Bigger eyes. One respondent laughed and queried: Just one? Which is, of course, precisely what I had just been thinking about myself.
That is when the tears started. Because who among us does not have some notion of what it takes to be beautifuland a very keen understanding of how we dont measure up? Who among us really feels beautiful, really feels complete, really feels comfortable in our own skin?
But adults numbered only half of those interviewed. Children made up the other half, and their answers were very different. What would children change about their bodies if they could? Just one thing? A sharks mouth. To eat a lot. Extra pointy ears. Wings. Legs to run fast like a cheetah. A mermaids tail. One child laughed and said: I dont think theres anything to change. Another responded, I like my body actually.
And upon hearing those answersthe fanciful enhancement, the innocent contentment, the happy satisfactionthat is when I really let loose with the tears, right there in the drive-thru, bawling to beat the band. Because who among us would tell these children any differently? Are they not fearfully and wonderfully made? Are they not dazzling creatures, just as they are, confident and radiant and unashamed, a
many-splendored wonder of unique design? Are they not the very portrait of unabashed beauty? Are not we also?
We, the self-same individuals, who as teachers, neighbors, parents, tell our children that they are indeed beautiful, that they are indeed loved, that they are indeed whole, just as they are, nothing added, nothing changed, nothing taken away.
We who tell our children that everyone is different and that everyone is beautiful and strong in their own way, in their own time. What is it we are telling ourselves?
Unlike the grown-ups, the children did not have a ready answer for how they would change their bodies. Even after giving the question a few moments of contemplation,
their answers did not indicate an assessment of shortcomings or a comparison of themselves
to other children. They did not wish to change or
discard any feature they already had. They responded with embellishments, wanting only to add on to what was already theirs. A way to make the satisfactory extraordinary. To do so they did not even look to humankind
at all. They looked instead to the realm of the wild or the fantastic. Wings. A
sharks mouth. Extra pointy ears.I admit I am nowhere close to meeting any
idealized standard of beauty, and Im certainly a long way from calling myself beautiful, especially when
Im sobbing in the drivers seat of a minivan. But I am ready for good enough. Im ready for satisfactory and the extraordinary.
Im ready for a better answer. If I could change one thing about my body, what would it be? Just one thing? A mermaids tail. Definitely.

Local Inspiration:
As a CEO and pregnant mommy-to-be, I understand the need to steal a few moments for yourself. Theres no doubt that living in our picturesque city by the sea lends itself to serene and inspiring thoughts, but these are my favorite places to let myself think BIG:
Pitt Street Bridge (Old Village, Mt. Pleasant): Catching a beautiful sunset always calms my mind and helps me visualize my next move.
Washington Square (Off Broad St., Downtown): Love vibing off such a historic site and imaging how many greats also sat in this park.
Local Works (LowcountryLocalFirst.com): This local coworking space has tons of energy (and local caffeine). Being surrounded by such positivity is always good for the soul.
