Quick information

Hebrew Wikipedia 100,000 articles celebration

Strategy: Small Budget, small events -> more press

work

100,000 articles is a huge achievement for the Hebrew Wikipedia and to the Hebrew culture – it is your duty as a journalist to write about it!

Local stories for the press.

Press: Weekend interview before the event; Wide

Variety of magazine stories

Immediate press release (less then one hour after the 100kth article was written).

Coverage: More than 30 news items on the “celebration day”, including Channel 2 midnight breaking news report and Channel 10 all day morning news ticker.

Marketing: Cards with featured images from Commons

with marketing and informative texts on their backs.Short quote from the relevant article"This picture is one of 5M media items on commons,

14.5M articles, 100,000 on them are in Hebrew that available free of charge and for free usage on Wikipedia”.

Wikimedia Vision statement (“Imagine a world…”)

T-shirts – With 100k celebration logo for every active editor on HE-WP (about 120).

Editors’ meet-up - Hosted by the Tel Aviv University.

“Crown Copyright” legislation reforma.k.a. “Wikipedia Law”

WM-IL followed the legislation of the new (2007) copyright law, and managed to prevent lengthening copyright on photos by decades.

The Parliamentary Science and Technology Committee held special session on the occasion of HEWP reaching 100,000 entries.

Result – The Chair of the Science Committee, MK Meir Shetrit responded to WM-IL’s request to propose an amendment to the “Crown Copyright” legislation, in order to allow free use of state-copyrighted photographs.

How it all started…

Strategy: Slogan – “Our money, Our rights”Releasing state-copyrighted images to

promote Israel’s public diplomacy and advocacy (“hasbara”), especially since “the other side” waives their copyrights in order to disseminate their point of view.Did you know? Al-Jazeera and pro-Palestinian

groups release some of their images and films, which are used on WP, Blogs etc.

Statistics of US-produced photos used on Commons and Wikipedia articles (thanks, Toolserver! :-))

Social networks:Blog – weekly updates about the process,

stories and news.

Facebook Page – Daily updates from the Blog, informational status and “We want to show this picture – but we can’t”.

Phase #1 – First proposal at the Government Committee for Legislation was rejected.

Massive press work - “the Government refuses to allow use of state-owned pictures, including historical pictures”.

Gaining public support of the Israeli Internet Association (ISOC-IL, Israeli chapter of the Internet Society) and the Israeli Press Council

Gaining the support of Minister Michael Eitan, who requested a rehearing on the Committee for Legislation.

Phase #2 - This legislation was re-discussed at the Committee for Legislation owing to WM-IL’s efforts and was approved!

The Knesset (Israeli Parliament) voted unanimously 21-0 to approve the preliminary reading of the bill.

Parliamentary hearing at the Science and Technology Committee, where it will be formalized, amended, and then passed back to the Knesset for final approval.

Meeting with Ministry of Justice’s officials (upon their request) to discuss the possibility of issuing governmental regulations in lieu of legislation.

Wikimania 2011 will take place in Haifa, Israel

How did we win the Wikimania bid? Outreach to the municipality of Haifa, and

Haifa University – letters of support etc.Realistic budget, based on research and

preliminary price quotes from suppliers and vendors

Realistic evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, ready answers to predictable concerns and questions.

Loads of factual details for the bid pageClear signs of commitment from more than a

handful of people; clear communication on the int'l channels.

Proven track record with WM events and activities.

What’s next at WMIL?Following “Crown Copyright” legislation

reform

Working on the off-line WP

Outreach – meet-ups, press, lectures.

Finding ways to manage and improve volunteer work within the chapter, increasing participation from editing community.

Wikimania 2011!

Thanks!Thanks!
