Ivan Dombiak Ivan Dombiak will become Bar Mitzvah on July 16, 2016. A rising eighth grader at Portland Jewish Academy, he is the son of Cynthia Scheines. His Mitzvah Project focuses on the care and nurture of dogs that are up for adoption at PetSmart, where he happily volunteers on Saturdays.
Leo Maxwell Schulhof Leo Maxwell Schulhof will become Bar Mitzvah on July 23, 2016. He is the son of Susanne Aronowitz and Robert Schulhof, and older brother of Benjamin. Leo is in the 7th grade at Robert Gray Middle School. For his Mitzvah Project, Leo has chosen to work with the Oregon Food Bank. He “chose this project because
some people take their privileges for granted, and some kids can’t even get a filling meal.” Leo plans to volunteer at the food bank packaging foods. For more information, visit www.oregonfoodbank.org/?c=131069416902860168.
Aliyah Miranda Blank Aliyah Miranda Blank will become Bat Mitzvah on July 30, 2016. She is the daughter of Joshua and Maria Blank, and older sister of Carmen and a student at West Sylvan Middle School. For her Mitzvah Project, Aliyah is raising money for IDF Widows and Orphans, an organization that runs
summer camps and programs for children who have lost a parent in the Israeli military. Aliyah’s “goal is to help these children have a safe place where they can make friends, feel safe, and meet others going through the same thing as them.” To learn more, visit www.idfwo.org.
Liam YakerLiam Yaker will become Bar Mitzvah on August 6, 2016. He is the son of James and Kricken Yaker, and brother of Riley and Beckett. Liam’s Mitzvah Project is inspired by his deep love of soccer, a sport he trains for twelve hours a week in hopes of making the Timbers Youth Academy.
Liam will be selling One World Durable Soccer Balls to raise money for the One World Play Project, an organization that provides soccer balls to communities worldwide. For every ball Liam sells, the organization will donate one to communities in need of them.
Max Schecter Max Schecter will become Bar Mitzvah on August 11, 2016. He is the son of Jack and Sara Schecter and the brother of Rachel and Samuel. Max has partnered with Universal Recycling Technologies (URT) to collect old and broken technology and recycle it in a way that is not harmful to the environment. His collection drive ran
this May at Congregation Beth Israel and made sure that these home electronics were kept out of landfills where they would have run the risk of groundwater contamination and serious pollution. Max thanks CBI for their recycling efforts and notes that “by recycling, you also save energy and materials because any salvaged parts from the technology can be reused in modern day computers and cell phones.”
Zadie Jean Schaffer Zadie Jean Schaffer will become Bat Mitzvah on August 13, 2016. She is the daughter of Scott Schaffer and Tracy Prince and the older sister of Price Schaffer. She will attend West Sylvan Middle School as an 8th grader in the fall. Zadie’s has spent the last eighteen months co-authoring a book titled
Notable Women of Portland’s History as part of her Mitzvah Project. It will be published by Arcadia Publishing, and proceeds will benefit the Goose Hollow Family Shelter. The book grew from Zadie’s interest in recognizing the important, and often understated, part that women have played in Portland’s history.
Olivia Elly Ziegler Olivia Elly Ziegler will become Bat Mitzvah on August 20, 2016. She is the daughter of Jan Cohen and Josh Ziegler and younger sister of Julia. She is a student at West Sylvan Middle School. For her Mitzvah Project, Olivia is working with the Oregon Food Bank. She will be setting up food donation bins at her Bat
Mitzvah service and party and volunteering at the food bank with friends and family.
Lucille Rebecca Seres Lucille Rebecca Seres will become Bat Mitzvah on August 27, 2016. She is the daughter of Steven and Geogreanne Seres and a student at Portland Jewish Academy. For her Mitzvah Project, she hopes to “provide art supplies and musical instruments” for The Dreaming Zebra Foundation, a non-profit encouraging
children to embrace their individuality, to express themselves creatively, and to follow their artistic dreams. She will set up donation bins on the CBI campus for gently used art supplies and instruments that can be recycled for art therapy or repaired for and used by children in need.

Our Leadership
When Illness Strikesby Ida Rae CahanaSenior Cantor
R’fa’einu Adonai v’neirafe; hoshieinu v’nivasheiah“Heal us, Eternal One and we will be healed; save us and we will be saved.”
Cantor Leon Sher wrote a moving musical setting of these words from our liturgy and added a passage from the Book of Numbers and another from Psalms so that the prayer continues:
“Please God, grant healing, healing of the soul, healing of the body, complete healing. You who blessed our fathers and our mothers: O please, help us, God.”
When I was in my early twenties, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and a few years after, so was my aunt. They went through surgery, treatment, and with the strength and the support that is the gift of loving family and friends, they became two more of the millions of women who survive this disease.
In April, I was diagnosed with a stage one breast cancer and have had surgery and am now in treatment myself, walking a path that so many of us fear. At first, I wanted to keep this news to myself and close family, but decided that it was best to let my congregation know. So many of you are dealing with illness in your own families, in yourselves, in your friends. Please know that your clergy and congregation are here for you, that people want to help; want to listen or schlep or cook for you. Because of HIPAA laws, even your Cantor and Rabbis often don’t know when sickness becomes a part of your life. And while I certainly understand the need for privacy and stillness as a piece of the healing process; I am also learning firsthand that opening up to another can also be a needed release.
We align ourselves with a group of people because of our chosen identity. We study; we mark time with holidays and celebrate together. And we also endure pain and mourn losses and struggle with what is incomprehensible.
I am very grateful to have this community to lean on right now and for a long time to come. I am very hopeful that my own diagnosis will end with a healthy, positive outcome. I pray that when you read this, you will understand that I am writing not out of a need for more attention – that you have already generously given me and my family – but to hopefully get your attention and encourage you to reach out when you have moments of distress. Your clergy and CBI community are here for you.
Hineinu! We are here! to help each other live the fullest, most positive, energetically Jewish lives we can. May we continue to trust in each other’s capacity for love and caring; may we be God’s angels, messengers of healing, and partners in bringing wholeness to those of us who are in a broken place.
A Spark Ignites: an Historic Mission and Ongoing Effortby Theodore M. NelsonBoard President
This past June, your Board of Trustees met at Rabbi and Cantor Cahana’s house for training. We focused on important structural topics -- state law, bylaws, and policy – that provide the
framework for the Board’s duties. I’m happy to report that the Board engaged in lively and productive discussion around the subject. I am grateful to presenters Ilene Davidson and Mark Peterman for their research and presentation and for their work to reveal information that guided each of us to service with deeper wisdom and understanding. Before we launched the day’s agenda, each of us told the group something that was current and relevant. I shared that two days before the retreat, I arrived home from an historic mission to Israel.
Many of you saw my article a few months ago in Oregon Jewish Life, discussing my anticipation of joining the history-making LGBTQ mission to Israel and my gratefulness for the opportunity carve out some time to join the Mission. The Mission was envisioned by Stuart Kurlander (a national LGBTQ leader), organized by Jewish Federations of North America, and strongly supported by our Jewish Federation of Greater Portland. Over 100 LGBTQ people from communities around the U.S. attended the Mission, with Portland well represented by seven people. The trip was transforming. Given our large group, we had the privilege of meeting the Honorable Reuven Rivlin (the President of the State of Israel) at his home in Jerusalem, U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shapiro and his wife, Julie Fisher, at their home on the Mediterranean Sea outside of Tel Aviv, and Dalia Rabin-Pelossof, the daughter of Yitzhak Rabin. We visited the border with Syria and Lebanon, where we were informed about middle-east challenges by author and Middle East expert, Avi Melamed. We held Shabbat services at the egalitarian prayer space near the Western Wall.
When the opportunity to join the Mission was presented to me, I was interested but uncommitted. Fellow Board member JoAnne Van Ness Menashe created the spark that brought together our Portland mission leadership team, setting in motion my involvement and nurturing my desire to join the Mission. I am grateful to Joanne and to our Jewish Federation for opening the door
and for sparking my interest to become involved in this life-changing mission. The Mission deepened my love of Judaism and understanding of the land, the people, and the State of Israel.
I feel honored and transformed to have been part of the mission leadership team. My initial feelings of ambivalence remind me of the importance of having a spark to ignite connection and experience. Your Board, clergy, and staff stand ready to inspire your engagement. Our CBI doors are open for you to find your path toward a full Jewish life and all of us seek opportunity to ignite your engagement. Please contact us and tell us what we can do to ensure you feel fully connected with CBI life.

Leslie Zimmer joins CBI as our new Clergy Assistant. Originally from the Midwest (Ohio and Chicago), she spent thirteen years in Los Angeles before moving to Portland last September. While living in Chicago and Los Angeles, Leslie worked at
Anshe Emet Synagogue in Chicago, as well as at Temple Judea and Kehillat Israel in Los Angeles, where she gained extensive knowledge in all aspects of Judaism’s lifecycles.
In her spare time, Leslie has run large singles groups in Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as fan conventions for thousands of people from all over the world. She has also run Dayton BBYO Alumni Reunions and has volunteered for many charitable organizations, especially those that help children. Her many creative endeavors include baking tempting desserts…while dreaming of one day to have a business showcasing her talents.
Leslie is excited to work for CBI’s dynamic clergy and looks forward to meeting her new congregation and helping out when needed.
Sarah Reiter is thrilled to be joining the CBI team as our new Education Administrator. Some of you may already know Sarah from her time as a 3rd Grade Religious School teacher here at CBI this last year. For those of you who she hasn’t met yet, Sarah is a University of Oregon alum who recently returned to Oregon after
two years of living in Washington, D.C. Having worked as a Religious School teacher and at Jewish summer camps for the past eight years, she is honored to be able to continue her personal and professional Jewish journey in the Congregation Beth Israel community.
Since last July, Congregation Beth Israel welcomed nearly sixty new families! In celebration of our growing, vibrant community, please join us on July 22 after Shabbat on the Plaza for a community wide Sha-BBQ.
Welcome, Leslie and Sara!

Religious School Wrap Upby Ben SandlerEducation Director
Summer is in full swing with beautiful Shabbat on the Plaza experiences, and with our Camp Sababa campers embarking on adventure with a truly unique Jewish day camp journey guided by our amazing Camp Directors Shoshanna Pro, Sarah Reiter and teen Madrichim.
Religious school registration is well underway, so if you have a child in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades, and have not done so already, please register them as soon as possible so we can plan our teaching faculty accordingly. Specifically, for students in sixth through twelfth grades our youth group calendar year is filling out nicely with opportunities for teen leadership, travel, and mostly fun! Huge congratulations to Shoshanna Pro, who begins our year in a new CBI position, Director of Youth Engagement. Nationally, our Reform Movement has a very special youth component in NFTY, and through her work, dedication and ruach, Shoshanna is elevating the youth group experience here at CBI and enriching the lives of our young people.
A warm welcome to Sarah Reiter! Over the past two months I’ve quickly come to appreciate the skills and talents of our new Education Administrator and Camp Sababa Director. Sarah brings humor, intellect, and a love of working in Jewish settings to our CBI Education team and I’m thrilled to be working together.
I’d like to conclude very special thank you to Ziva Sholin, who has served as our Education Administrator for the past two years. Ziva took the initiative on so many behind the scenes aspects of our CBI Preschool and Religious School, and I’m so grateful for having the opportunity to work with her. I know that her journey to the south will be filled with new experiences, people, and adventures, and that she will be successful in this next chapter in her life (plus, my Mom lives in Charlotte, NC and is committed to keeping an eye after her:) ) Ziva , on behalf of CBI thank you so much for all your good work, “May you be blessed as you go on your way, may you be guided in peace, may you be blessed with health and joy, may this be our blessing amen.” (from T’filat HaDerech by Debbie Friedman, based on the liturgy).
L’ Shalom,
Ben Sandler

After two wonderful years working in the Education Department, I am moving on to a start a new adventure in Charlotte, North Carolina. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all my fellow staff members, parents, and students for making my experience so memorable here. This is a very special community that I will always cherish and keep near to my heart. It has been amazing to get to know each and every one of you and to have been the face of the Religious School these last couple years. Thank you for all the support and encouragement I’ve received during this transition, I feel very loved and honored to have been a part of Congregation Beth Israel. Even though I will miss this great community, I am looking forward to this new phase of my life. If you know someone in Charlotte or ever find yourself there, please ask the main office for my personal email address so we can be in touch. Goodbye for now and best wishes for the future!

Hineinu, I Am Here: A Progress Reportby Ilene Davidson, Chair of the Hineinu Task Force
Last November a number of congregants, with the guidance of our clergy, came together to foster and nourish our community, to grow our efforts to engage in acts of Bikkur Cholim, to be ambassadors for our community, to greet people at Shabbat services, and to provide opportunities for our congregants to come together in many different ways.
Our Steering Committee members, Bobbie Goldstein, Bob Kravitz, Sydney Baer, Michelle Gradow, Susan Milstein, Rachel Pollin, Robin McCoy, Jan Cohen, Margie Anton, Michael Anton, Daureen Morris, David Goldwyn, Rob LaForte, Bianca Urdes, Tony Urdes, Sarah Epstein, Maurrie Salenger, and Kira Denison have worked incredibly hard to create opportunities for our congregants to come together in a variety of ways, from ushering at services, creating beautiful Onegs, and organizing entertaining events to engage each of our congregants. Bobbie and Bob continue to develop our Caring Community, including the creation of Neighborhood Circles, which now have captains to help neighboring congregants connect with one another. Cantor Cahana, Rabbi Joseph, Jen Feldman, and Marisa Reby have been invaluable in helping us develop programming to better unite us all.
Our Steering Committee is working through the summer to develop a robust array of opportunities for our congregants to connect with one another and we are excited to introduce these in September. Over the summer, you will see us at Shabbat on the Plaza Services and we can provide you with more information.
So, we are here, but are you? While we’ve had some amazing responses to our invitations - a great turnout at our special Shabbat Service and Oneg in February, the positive response to our Neighborhood Circles, with potlucks and other events being hosted by our congregants - we’ve had less success with other events. We need your input - tell us what you would like to see at CBI - and we need your presence - join us at our events. Please sign up to get notifications of activities planned by our Families, Adults 30+ and/or Adults 50+, just let Alyssa know at [email protected] and ask to be put on the distribution list.
If you would like to get involved or have questions or suggestions, please let me know at [email protected]. We are here for you - please be here for us.

We have had nothing but fun and camaraderie on our adventures together. If you would like to join us, please email Alyssa at [email protected] and have your name added to our list. We look forward to seeing you!

You make it all possible by Jenat Levison FeldmanDevelopment Director
The generosity of our CBI community is truly meaningful. While there are numerous ways to demonstrate your support, the donors listed below are those who have gone above and beyond and helped us far surpass this year’s original $215,000 fundraising
goal. To them we say thank you, thank you, and thank you again.
On a regular basis, members ask me how things are going at CBI and/or how are we doing financially? This year I can proudly say that thanks to over 550 individuals, families, and businesses we had an extremely successful fundraising year. My March Bulletin article listed many of the programs and services that the money you donated helped fund.
At CBI we consider ourselves partners with our members; all of this belongs to you. Through our annual campaign (formerly dues) we ask that you give us your best, most meaningful contribution and we in turn do our best to provide an impactful and transformative experience. With 40% of our membership needing some kind of financial help, we turn to our CBI community and ask that you join with us to provide the necessary supplemental support so that we can keep our doors wide open and welcoming to all. In every way this is a partnership.
It is our privilege to thank you for helping us create Jewish memories and impact Jewish lives. It is an honor to list all the donors who have made this year’s amazing programs and services possible by: making an annual contribution (formerly dues) above and beyond their giving level; contributing to our Every Family Initiative (EFI) Campaign; supporting either of our two major fundraisers (Traditions or Taste and Temple) whether as a sponsor, a Mitzvah Moment or Recipe for Success donor; buying a Golden Ticket or admission to a House Party; or donating through the school registration fundraiser. It is truly thanks to each of you that all this and more is possible.
While we continue to thank you, we hope you will continue to be with us as much and as often as you can. As we turn the page to the 2016-17 fiscal year, we want to SHOUT that we are already planning to COME TOGETHER on Sunday, September 18th, because we know WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS, WE CAN WORK IT OUT.
