Parish Mission Statement
The Parish of St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, inspired by Mary’s “Yes” and led by the Holy Spirit,
strives to be a faith-filled community, joyfully welcoming all to witness and to celebrate the Gospel.
COMMUNITY LUNCH
at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
12 Noon-1:00pm
Everyone is welcome
Cost: Free
What: In early August Fr. Ken announced
our parish would reach out to the greater
community by providing a free lunch once
per month. It is open to anyone and
everyone. No questions are asked! It is not
just for the poor or homeless, but for
everyone in our community. No donations
required. Just come and eat and spend a little
time with others.
We are asking for volunteers from our parish
to assist with cooking, set up, clean up, to
bake desserts and maybe just to be here and
greet guests and make them feel welcome.
You can volunteer just once, or once every
few months.
Please help us to make this endeavor a
success. By looking outward, we will see the
presence of God in the eyes of others!

The high school youth group has been very active this summer between
our summer mission trip to Winnebago, Nebraska, vacation bible school,
and volunteering Wednesday late afternoons at the Gleaner's Mercado
Client Choice Food Pantry.
Weekly youth group meetings will start up again on Monday, September
17 from 7:15 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in the youth group room located in the
parish center. We meet every Monday with the exceptions of holidays
and a short one month break in the summer. All high school teens in
grades 9 -12 are welcome regardless of what high school attend. We
understand and take into account the ever changing
schedule that a teen endures. If you can't come every week
that is totally fine. Come when you can. You are
ALWAYS welcome.
Please also mark you calendars for our first WAYMC
event of the new school year. WAYMC stands for Western
Area Youth Ministry Cooperative. WAYMC is a
collaboration of parishes in our area that come together to
host events for high school teens. Sunday, September 30
we will be hosting our annual High School Youth Group
Softball Challenge & BBQ at Jaycee Park in Westland
from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00p.m. Cost is $3 per teen. No softball
experience is necessary. Come and have fun and meet
teens from our parish as well as other parishes.
If you have any questions, please contact Carol Nelius,
coordinator of youth ministry via email at youthministry@stmarycooj.org
Six of our high school teens ( Gillian Frazier, Jose Perez, Jean-Michel Lecourt, Brandon Winn,
Brittney Winn, and Marissa Muller) spent an amazing week in Winnebago, Nebraska with sev-
eral other youth groups from different parts of the United States. We were able to serve on both
the Winnebago and Omaha reservations. We stayed that St. Augustine Indian Mission School
which was founded by St. Katharine Drexel in 1909. It is the only Catholic institution in the
state of Nebraska directly founded by a canonized saint. We also got to experience the annual
Pow-Wow that the Winnebago tribes hosts every year. Over the next few weeks we will share
some of our experiences. Below are some of our pictures from our journey. To see the rest of
them, please view our mission trip photo album on our facebook page

more volunteers!
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
(CLOW) is an age-appropriate
Liturgy of the Word offered for
ages 4 through 2nd graders.
During this special time, the
volunteer teacher leads the
children through prayers, songs
and readings that are simplified for
children. The children learn about
the same Scripture readings as the
rest of the assembly.

The Archdiocese of Detroit stands with the brave survivors who seek to bring the
crime of child sexual abuse by clergy and other Church representatives into the
light, where those who sinned are confronted and those who were harmed can
find healing. To those harmed by the actions and inaction of Church leaders: It is
inexcusable and we are sorry. In an effort to consolidate our resources and re-
spond to the faithful’s questions about clergy sexual abuse, the Archdiocese of
Detroit has created a new “mini” website at protect.aod.org. This site highlights information
about reporting abuse, victim assistance, investigations, training for clergy and lay employees
and volunteers, and provides additional resources, including messages from Archbishop
Vigneron. Our goal is to make this important information – already available on aod.org – more
visible, transparent and clear.
