RE-GIFTS FOR SENIOR SUMMER FESTIVAL NOW thru Friday, June 15th

It’s that annual event, the collection of the “re-gifts”. Go through

your closets and drawers. We need items for the gift baskets we make up for the Senior Summer Festival. We are in need of those items that are “still good stuff” but “I don’t need it” things.

We need those items that your family gave you last year, but never used! We will take those items you bought on impulse and now are just sitting on the shelf. Holiday theme items are great too! We are looking for ladies and gentlemen alike. Bring your clean items to Carrie’s office any time. Hand-made items are okay too. Thank you for helping us create our summer festival baskets!

Independence Village of Plymouth will be celebrating National Donut Day in the lobby of the Civic Park Senior Center. Come enjoy a fresh, yummy donut! One per person, while supplies last.

Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Chuck Dardas of the AlphaUSA Corporation, Livonia, Michigan the Civic Park Senior Center re-ceived a fresh coat of paint and some sprucing up. Mr. Dardas donated the manpower to paint and freshen up our Center. Frank, his painter has been working diligently these past sever-al months to make our Center bright and cheery! Everyone at the Civic Park Senior Center wants to give Chuck and Frank a great big “THANK YOU!” for your donation and service to the Civic Park Senior Center and the City of Livonia. “Well Done!”

Wednesday, June 6th at 10am FREE Ben Wightman, Au.D., and Beth Borin, M.A., from Sound Advice Audiology in Livonia, re-turn to the Civic Park Senior Center to talk about treatment options for hearing loss and what's the latest and greatest in hearing solutions. There will also be an opportunity for "Ask the Audiologist". For those interested, FREE ear wax removal and hearing screenings will be provided, following the talk. ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUP

Thursday, June 7th 10am Facilitators from Home Instead Senior Care are available beginning at 10:00am for an open discussion for family, friends and loved ones of those living with Alzheimer’s or de-mentia related issues. No reservations. Just drop in. Refreshments will be supplied.

DETROIT INSTITUE OF ART TRIP

Thursday, June 7th 12:30pm $5.00* The DIA is sponsoring Senior Thursdays with FREE transportation in a deluxe motor coach, FREE admission which includes: a short Gallery Guild Tour, time to explore the permanent collection on your own and see the new “Play Ball!” Baseball exhibit (a rare col-lection of baseball cards), plus a cookie & coffee reception. Bus departs at 12:30pm from the Senior Center returning approximately 3:30pm. Please sign-up, with payment at the volunteer desk with your $5.00 deposit to reserve your spot! *This will be returned to you on the bus ride there.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL Friday, June 8th, 12:30pm

Take a break and come enjoy your favorite sundae at the Senior Center. No reservation necessary. All your favorite toppings included! Cost is only $1.00 at the door! More ice cream socials for the summer ~ July 20th, August 17th, and September 14th, so save the dates!

FATHER’S DAY PARTY Friday, June 15th 11:45am

Please join us as we celebrate all of the fathers and men today! Come enjoy a Wayne County meatloaf lunch, root beer floats, sponsored by Wayne County Commissioner Terry Marecki, and exciting horse racing games with free “betting money” and great prizes! You must purchase your ticket in advance at the volunteer desk for $3.00 per person. Tickets will be on sale beginning Tuesday, May 29th until Wednesday, June 13th, unless we sell out sooner.

LOW VISION WORKSHOP – EXPLORING FLASHES & FLOATERS IN VISION

Wednesday, June 20th at 11:15am No Charge Research has found that over 70% of people have experienced flashes and floater in their vision. What causes them, risk factors and when they become a medical emergency will be explored. Join us for this informational workshop at the Civic Park Senior Center to learn when an irritating flash or floater can actually be a sign of something more. ANGELA HOSPICE GARDEN TEA PARTYWednesday, June 20th 12pm – 3pm

Tour the Angela Hospice & Felician grounds via trolley! Learn the history of the Felician ministries, fountains, gardens, and grottos on the campus. After the tour, enjoy tea & de-lightful snacks made especially for you by our Angela Hospice Volunteer “Tea Ladies”. You must have a ticket for this event. Please see Carrie in the office to register. The Civic Park Senior Center will provide transportation to and from Angela Hospice. Departure times from the center are as follows: 11:45am, 12:15pm and 12:45pm. Return times from Angela Hospice are 2pm, 2:30pm and 3pm. For more information, please call (734)466-2557. Space is very limited, so do not wait to sign up. This free event will fill up quickly!

FARMER’S MARKET EXCURSIONS “EASTERN MARKET”

Saturday, June 23rd 8:00am $7.00 residents and $9.00 non-residents Transportation will be provided to and from Detroit’s Eastern Market. Once at the market you are on your own to explore, shop, walk, and dine until the bus departs at 11:30am. Register with payment at the volunteer desk or call (734) 466-2555 for more information. It’s easy to feel intimidated by the shiny labels, jargon, fancy sniffing and swirling that ac-companies wine. But with just a few bits of knowledge, a couple tastes, and a lot of fun you can get a glimpse into the world of a wine connoisseur. Come to the Civic Park Senior Center and learn from a Michigan vintner, Emily Goodell of Amoritas Vineyards, about the history of wine and the basics of tasting, and learn just enough to tackle any wine list, tasting or food pairing! 2018 SENIOR SUMMER FESTIVAL “Under the BIG TOP CIRCUS” Wednesday, June 27th

Calling all clowns, ringmasters, gypsies, and lion tamers…come join us from 9:30am-2pm at the Senior Center as we once again have a great time at our Annual Senior Summer Festival! Our theme this year will be “Under the BIG TOP Circus”! Games, prizes, FREE B-I-N-G-O, entertainment, raffles, silent auction, boxed lunch and much more! Based on last year’s response we expect tickets to go fast, so don’t wait! NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR! Cost for Livonia residents, $5.00 with I.D. and $7.00 for non-residents. DETROIT TIGERS SENIOR DAYS & EVENING GAME$55.00 residents, $59.00 non-residents

Cost includes: round trip transportation via deluxe motor coach, right field box seating, meal plan = hot dog & pop (not included with evening game), drop off and pick up, and volunteer escort. All games depart from Ford Field (Livonia) at 11:00am for the 1:10pm games and at 4:45pm for the 7:10pm game. *Please be advised that walking is involved with this trip. ALPHA BOOK CLUB

Thursday, June 28th from 3:00 – 4:30pm No Charge Alpha Company will host another book club at the Civic Park Senior Center. At the meet-ing in June, Chuck Dardas will present on the book, “Thunderstruck” written by Erik Lar-son. This book will guide you through a relentlessly suspenseful chase over the waters of the North Atlantic. Please note: All of those that participated in March’s book club will au-

CIVIC PARK SENIOR CENTER MEMORY CAFÉ

Beginning Saturday, July 28th from 11am-1pm No Charge Join us for the Civic Park Senior Center Memory Café! The Memory Café is a gathering of people living in all stages of dementia with their care partners. It creates an opportunity to spend time together in a welcoming place sharing stories and friendship with others who are living a similar journey. Participants will gather in a safe and comfortable space to so-cialize, share coffee, tea and refreshments. In addition to social time, participants of the Memory Café will enjoy a planned activity. Giving everyone a chance to try something new while connecting, creating and sharing. The café is open to those in all stages of demen-tia. Pre-registration required. MICHIGAN STATE FAIR SENIOR DAY 62+!

Thursday, August 30th 9:00am Transportation $10.00 residents & $13.00 non-residents

Reserve your space for this fun filled day at the Michigan State Fair. There will be a special program from 10:00am-12:00noon with entertainment, prizes, contests, games, vendors, group seating and a delicious lunch will be included! Following the special senior citizens event you will have time to tour the fair grounds, see the animals and have fun in the mid-way. Register with payment at the volunteer desk. Sorry but grandchildren are not allowed to attend the10am-12noon portion of the event. Only 100 tickets will be available for Livo-nia! Sign Up Early!!! The bus departs from Ford Field.

CASINO NIGHT – SAVE THE DATE Saturday, September 15th at 5pm

The Civic Park Senior Center will be hosting an exciting casino night! There will be profes-sional blackjack dealers along with a deluxe roulette, craps, and poker tables. Come join us for prizes, food, and fun! More information to follow with additional details and costs.

TOUR DETROIT’S MEXICANTOWN AND CORKTOWN

Friday, September 21st Departs at 8:30am $53 residents & 55 non-residents Experience a day filled with history, culture, and food including a bus tour by a local his-torian of the diverse and growing area of Southwest Detroit. Get a sense of Detroit’s local flavor and vitality by touring the main areas of Corktown and Mexicantown, including Michigan Avenue, historic neighborhoods dating back to the 1830’s, Roosevelt Park, and the corner of Vernor and Bagley. We will discuss the challenges and opportunities in these neighborhoods, the diverse population make-up and cultural preservation, and draw attention to the extensive positive investment, rehabilitation efforts and community build-ing taking place. This outing includes a visit to Honeybee Market, a 3rd generation family-owned business, for a tour of the Market and tasting of generous samples of cheese, fruit, chips, salsa, guacamole, and tamales. We will also go on a guided tour of Ste. Anne’s De-troit Catholic Church which is the 2nd oldest Catholic parish in the U.S. Lastly, we will stop for lunch at Los Galanes, which will be on your own. Please note, this tour includes some steps at various locations that will need to be navigated for accessibility. We will de-part from the Civic Park Senior Center at 8:30am and return approximately at 4:30pm. Please register, with payment, in the front office. Space is limited.

CREATIVE CORNER GIFT SHOP VENDORS NEEDED Do you have a talent making quality, hand made, crafted items? The Creative Corner gift shop is looking for vendors in our shop. Please stop by and visit the gift shop, get ideas and see if there is something you can make and sell. The gift shop is located in the Civic Park Senior Center and is open Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm. The Senior Center keeps 10% of the proceeds. SENIOR CENTER, GROCERY SHOPPING, WESTLAND MALL & DOCTOR VAN SENIOR CENTER TRANSPORTATION BUS (S.C.A.N.)

The Senior Center Transportation Buses provide curb-to-curb rides to residents 62 and over, within the City limit on a donation basis. Rides are available to local shopping dis-tricts, grocery stores, Westland Mall (1st & 3rd Thursday 10:30am) and to the Senior Center. Service hours for the Senior Center are Monday thru Friday. 1. Senior Center. Buses leave from the Senior Center at 8:30am and we ask that you be ready for pick up by 8:30am. Buses return home 1:00pm Monday–Friday and 3:00pm Mondays & Tuesdays & Special Event Days. 2. Grocery Shopping Monday-Friday (Locations Vary) depending if you are North or South of 5 Mile Road. Call (734) 466-2555 for shopping locations. Driver will inform riders the amount of time allowed at the store and pickup location at designated time. 3. Westland Mall Shopping takes place on the 1st (minimum of 4 riders) & 3rd Thursdays of every month. Bus departs for pickup at 10:30am so please be ready for pickup at that time. Once at the Mall the driver will inform you the amount of time you will be allowed and the pickup location (Usually where you are dropped off).

Monday-Friday the Civic Park Senior Center offers a shuttle to doctors’ offices within the City of Livonia and up to one mile outside the City limits. Please

contact (734) 466-2700 to make your advance reservation. There is no charge for this ser-vice (donations gratefully accepted). This service fills up quickly so please call as soon as you know the date and time of your appointment. All vehicles are wheelchair equipped. Age 62 and over. Reservations accepted up to 90 days in advance. Maximum of two (2) rides per week. You must make your appointment so that you are able to get home be-fore/no later than 2:30pm. Our vehicles do not provide transportation to or from nursing

homes or assisted living facilities. We Do Not Transport Medical Emergencies!
