Communication-comes from the Latin word

“communis,” meaning commonness.

-Nuval (2008) defines communication as a process of sharing meaning. It involves a common experience and mutual influence.

-Padilla, Mely M., et al. (2003) states that communication is a process wherein knowledge, ideas, information, attitudes, feelings and the like are transmitted.

-communication is a two-way process by which information is exchanged between or among individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, and behaviour.

Verbal Communication

-the transmission of ideas, opinions, feelings, emotions or attitudes through the use of words.

1. Syntax – set of rules that determines the structure of language. (follow regular rules and grammar)

2. Semantics – deals with designing meanings to symbols.

Types of Meaning

1. Denotation – also known as dictionary meaning, is the conventional meaning people in a culture agree to use when they encounter a particular symbol.

2. Connotation – refers to the emotional

component of the symbol’s meaning.

Nonverbal Communication

-refers to the sending of messages to another person utilizing methods or means other than words.

7 Categories of Nonverbal Communication

1. physical appearance

2. body movement (kinesthetics)

3. paralanguage

4. touch (haptics)

5. artifacts

6. time (chronemics)

7. space and territory (proximics)
