Dear Parents,
I hope your family is enjoying a happy and
memorable summer. The SCMS staff and
PTO are preparing for a positive and suc-
cessful start to the 2017-18 school year.
It is such a privilege to lead South Charlotte
Middle School, a community of outstanding
family support, stellar student achievement,
and a variety of options for student interests
from athletics to fine arts to Science Olympi-
ad. The unofficial results of state testing
show that 86% of our students obtained a
proficient score on their End of Grade Tests.
We will have official results in September,
but the unofficial results regarding proficien-
cy and growth indicate tremendous achieve-
ment by teachers and students. Our ath-
letics, fine arts, extra-curricular clubs and
academics also experienced a great year.
We are pleased to welcome new staff mem-
bers to our Shocker team. To reduce class
sizes in math and English/Language Arts
(ELA), we hired an additional math/ELA
teacher for each grade. We also added a
second Project Lead the Way teacher. Justin
Hecht will work with Ms. Williams in this
exciting hands-on engineering and computer
science program. Mr. Hecht graduated from
Ohio State and will begin his career at South
Charlotte. Justin Rose will be our new Ath-
letic Director and a physical education
teacher. A CMS coach and teacher for many
years, he will bring a Lacrosse program to
our school.
Our new grade level staff members are ea-
ger to help all students meet and exceed
their academic goals. Dawn Hoey will teach
6th grade math. Formerly an Academic Facil-
itator at Sterling Elementary, she brings
much content expertise. Meghan McCrock-
lin, who joins us from Providence Spring
Elementary, will teach 6th grade math and
ELA. The 7th grade team welcomes Erin
Woodworth who will teach ELA. She taught
7th grade ELA at Berryhill Academy so she
comes highly prepared and experienced.
Coming to us from Charlotte Country Day is
Julene Less, who will teach 7th grade math.
She looks forward to working with 7th grade
students. Joining the 8th grade math team is
Jason Digavero. He has taught math several
years in CMS and private schools and looks
forward to leading the Math Counts team.
Also joining the 8th grade math team is Alis-
sa Simons who will begin her teaching ca-
reer at South Charlotte. Before teaching,
Ms. Simons worked for Major League Base-
ball and the International Olympic Com-
mittee. Laura Cudmore will teach 8th grade
ELA. She has taught reading and Language
Arts for many years and is passionate about
sparking student interest in reading and
writing.
The staff is eager to meet and welcome back
all of our students. Sixth grade and new
student open house is August 25. From
12:30 to 2 PM, we will welcome 6th graders
with last names A-K. From 2:30 to 4 PM, we
will welcome 6th graders with last names L-
Z and new 7th and 8th grade students.
Please contact us if you have any questions
or concerns. Student success is always our
goal and we will work together for viable
solutions. Thank you in advance for allowing
us to serve your students.
Kindest Regards,
Lisa Bailes, Principal

2 Summer 2017
SCMS PTO Dedicated to Supporting Students and Staff As we near the end of summer break, we look toward another successful academic year at South Charlotte.
Our PTO is developing a new budget that focuses on current needs of students, teachers and our entire
school community. We will continue support of the one-to-one learning initiative with maintenance of stu-
dent issued Chromebooks, fund professional development opportunities for teachers so they can stay up-to-
date with the ever-evolving trends in education and technology, purchase items needed to complement and
enhance our students’ learning experiences and provide volunteer assistance throughout the year.
As a South Charlotte Middle School PTO member, you are an important part of this process. Please take ad-
vantage of opportunities to make a difference.
• Stay connected through PowerSchool. This site not only allows you to monitor assignments and grades,
it serves as your registration to receive important phone messages and through email, weekly issues of
The Shockwave.
• Like South Charlotte Middle School on Facebook. You’ll find information on events, accomplishments
and other important happenings on this social networking site.
• Donate to our Annual Fund campaign. This fundraising effort follows a single donation model that allows
every dollar contributed to be utilized. Please see the Annual Fund article on page 3, which outlines some
of last year’s purchases.
• Link your Harris Teeter VIC card and clip General Mills Box Tops. Funds from these two programs alone
contribute around $2,000 annually to South Charlotte.
• Volunteer. There are opportunities to fit any schedule and interest, so don’t hesitate to donate your time
and expertise.
Board members look forward to seeing you during Open House (August 25) and Curriculum Nights (6th Grade
- September 18), (7th and 8th Grades - September 19). If you have questions about our PTO in the meantime
or anytime during the school year, feel free to contact me at 704-502-1981 or mclynch@bellsouth.net.
Thank you for your support and dedication to the education of our South Charlotte students!
—Mitzi Lynch, President, SCMS PTO
EASY WAYS TO SUPPORT SCMS PTO
Re-link your Harris Teeter VIC card at checkout, on the Harris Teeter
website, or on the SCMS Pay4SchoolStuff order form. Cards are not
automatically re-linked. The school code is 1933. Last year, we raised
more than $1,500!
Clip Box Tops for Education and send them in. A drop-off box is in the
school’s foyer. SCMS received more than $300 during the 2016-17
school year.
Thanks to the generous support of more than 230 families, the Annual Fund raised more than $43,000
last school year. These funds allowed us to purchase seven water coolers that include water bottle fillers.
These new water bottle fillers will be placed throughout the campus: one in each PE locker room, two out-
side the PE hallway and one in each grade-level hallway. These new water cooler stations will help keep
our students hydrated and healthy.
In addition to the water coolers, the annual fund donations provided professional development opportu-
nities for our staff, celebrated our wonderful teachers during Staff Appreciation Week, provided funding
for materials for teacher classrooms and created a new learning room in the 6th grade hallway to be used
for breakout groups. When complete, this room will be furnished in much the same way that we’ve fur-
nished the Media Center in recent years with small tables and chairs that can be easily moved to accom-
modate group work of all sizes. This year, we expect to provide similar spaces for 7th and 8
th graders.
Thank you for supporting South Charlotte Middle School. If you have any questions about the annual
fund, please contact Heather Collier, VP of Fundraising, at hmcollier@gmail.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
Continued on next page
Transportation
Q: How will parents know the bus their child needs to take to school?
A: Bus stickers will be sent home to every family in August. The sticker includes:
• Child’s Name • Address • School Assignment • AM/PM Bus Numbers • Stop Location • Estimated Pickup & Delivery
Times
Please have your child at the bus stop at least 10 minutes before pickup time.
Q: How can families request alter-native bus stops for their child?
A: CMS will provide transportation to alternative stop locations, including licensed daycares and/or relative’s address, only if the stop is in the child’s attending school boundary. Parents may call the school office to determine if their alternative stop is within their school’s boundary. Forms to request an alternative stop are available at every school.
Q: If my child is late arriving home, how can I inquire if his/her bus is late?
A: Call 980.343.3670 if your stu-dent’s bus is unusually late. Someone is in the office until 4:30 PM. If we’ve been notified of a late bus, students will be given the opportunity to call you. Please remember the most effi-cient routes are generally deter-mined during the first two weeks of school.
Q: Should I drive my child to school during the first week?
A: Although bus transportation can be frustrating during the first several days of school, if you registered for a bus stop, your child needs to ride the bus. Otherwise, your stop might be eliminated for nonuse. Bus routes are refined during the first few weeks of school.
Q: If I routinely drive my child to school, what are appropriate arrival and pickup times?
A: Students are not allowed in the building before 8 AM. School dis-misses at 3:30 PM. Students can re-port to their homerooms beginning at 8:15 AM. Students who are not in their seats and prepared for class by 8:30 AM are considered tardy. Par-ents are asked to be prompt in col-lecting their children in the after-noons.
Parents who do not routinely pick up their students within 30 minutes of the close of school (4 PM) or within 20 minutes of any school-sponsored activity are considered negligent. The administration will take appro-priate action, if necessary, regarding this issue.
Q: What is the procedure for the carpool line?
A: The carpool line is a two-car flow. Parents are requested to pull up to the crosswalk to let their children disembark. Students should NOT leave their cars and walk through waiting automobiles to get to the sidewalk.
Q: What if my child is not waiting for me on the sidewalk?
A: Carpool students and students who walk are dismissed before bus students. It is the student’s responsi-bility to go directly to their car. Cars without waiting students are asked to circle around to Strawberry Lane and rejoin the line until their child appears.
Q: I noticed that South Charlotte Middle School has an entrance and an exit. Can I sneak in the exit to wait for my child?
A: No. As stated, the carpool line is a two-car flow. Both lanes of the school exit are used for exiting vehi-cles.
Q: Where do I park when I visit or volunteer at the school?
A: Please use the parking spaces fac-ing the school cafeteria and parking spaces 24 – 31. ALL other spaces are for staff parking only. Overflow park-ing is in the grass near the bus lot.
Curriculum
Q: Where are the grade-level summer reading lists and school supply lists?
A: These lists for each grade level are on the SCMS website: http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/southcharlotteMS/Pages/SummerReading2015.aspx.
Q: Does my child really need a cal-culator?
A: Yes.
Summer 2017 6
The Shocker
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Was the summer reading required?
A: There is one expected book for each grade level. Once school be-gins, students will participate in an activity based on their book. To prepare for grade-level language arts and social studies programs, students are encouraged to read two additional books from the list.
Q: Can I change my child’s schedule?
A: Scheduling is a very complex process. With over 850 students, it is impossible for every child to re-ceive his/her first choices. However, class changes can be made during the first 10 days of school for aca-demic reasons. Change forms are available in the Guidance Office. All schedule changes must be ap-proved by the Assistant Principal.
Q: How was my child placed in honors math and language arts?
A: The CMS rubric was used as a placement guide for all students.
Q: Is Physical Education (PE) required?
A: The State Board of Education requires all 6th, 7th, and 8th grad-ers to take one semester of PE per year. More PE questions are an-swered on page 10.
Q: Where can I view homework assigned by my child’s teacher?
A: Every teacher has a website. These websites include homework assignments.
Communication
Q: I understand that Principal Bailes sends out a weekly message to parents. When should we ex-pect to receive this message?
A: Mrs. Bailes sends The Shock-wave, a weekly newsletter, via email. It is also posted on the SCMS website, along with past editions. Mrs. Bailes encourages all families to read this newsletter as her goal is to ensure par-ents are in-formed of South Charlotte "happenings" at all times.
Q: How do I sign up for The Shock-wave?
A: The Shockwave is sent each week to the email addresses of all parents on file in PowerSchool. Please ensure the email address in PowerSchool is the correct address. We do not currently print The Shockwave, but if you do not have Internet access, let the front office know and they will assist you.
Attendance
Q: When can I collect my child for early dismissal?
A: Students are required to bring a note from their parent notifying the school of the need for an early dis-missal. These notes are to be taken to the Attendance Office in the morning, and the student is given a dismissal pass. There are NO early dismissals between 3 and 3:30 PM.
Students will be dismissed at class breaks. Dismissals during scheduled class time will not be allowed un-less it is an extreme emergency. Classroom interruptions affect classroom engagement and ulti-mately can negatively affect stu-dent performance. Please contact Mrs. Bailes if you have questions.
Dress Code & Book Bags
Q: Does South Charlotte Middle School have a dress code?
A: Yes. Information regarding the dress code will be sent to parents, and it will be posted on the SCMS website.
Q: Can my child carry a book bag to class?
A: Within the first 10 days of school, students will be issued book bags for the purpose of protecting the devices that will be issued (each stu-dent receives a Chromebook). The book bags will be distributed at the same time the devices are distribut-ed. The devices will be collected each day as will the issued book bags; therefore, students will need a personal book bag. The personal book bag will remain in the stu-dent’s locker each day. There will be ample time to return to lockers to collect anything needed from the book bag throughout the day and to ensure the book bag may be re-trieved at the end of the day.
EARLY DISMISSAL POLICY
7 Summer 2017
The Shocker
All early dismissals must leave and return following the bell schedule. Please look for the
2017-2018 bell schedule in The Shockwave and on the SCMS website and refer to it
throughout the year. Students will also be given a copy the first day of school.
Students must bring a note from their parent explaining the need for the early dismissal to
the attendance office in the morning. They will be issued a dismissal pass. There are NO
early dismissals between 3 and 3:30 PM. Classroom interruptions affect classroom engage-
ment and ultimately can negatively affect student performance.

SCMS FINE ARTS NETWORK
The Shocker
Summer 2017 8
Do you love the GoPlaySave coupon books with great offers from your fa-
vorite Charlotte area stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues? The
South Charlotte Fine Arts Network (FAN) is planning to sell these coupon
books again this year pending final approval. The fundraiser is scheduled
to begin the week of September 4. It’s a win-win for everyone! Parents
and friends receive a fantastic coupon book filled with savings, students
are rewarded for selling the books with a party and prizes, and the SCMS
Fine Arts program, which includes art, band, chorus, dance, drama and or-
chestra, benefits with needed funds to support and improve the programs.
Last year’s fundraiser helped upgrade the sound system for the Cafetorium
and fulfilled wish lists for all the Fine Arts teachers! The GoPlaySave book
pays for itself when used only once or twice, and half of the proceeds go
back to SCMS FAN. We hope your students will participate and you will
support this important fundraiser. We look forward to seeing you and your students this fall!
Odyssey of the Mind is a competitive program that promotes divergent and critical
thinking. Every team consists of a maximum of seven students who must creatively
solve (without any assistance outside of their teammates) a given problem and
present their solution in the form of an eight-minute skit. Problem requirements
range from building vehicles and engineering mechanical devices to mastering
classical literature, art and comedy methods. Team members also learn the art of
improvisation and how to respond spontaneously to random verbal questions and
work together to solve hands on building problems.
Odyssey of the Mind tryouts will be held at South Charlotte during the first few weeks of school. Stu-
dents placed on a team will begin practices in late September and will compete at the Central Region
competition in March, with a chance to advance to State Finals in April and World Finals in May.
If you are interested in volunteering as a coach, if your child is interested in trying out for a team or if
you have questions about Odyssey of the Mind, contact Mitzi Lynch at mclynch@bellsouth.net.
The SCMS PTO is excited to once again partner with Barnes & Noble to provide
our 2017 Book Fair in September! Students, parents, friends, and families can
shop in-store at The Arboretum location as well as online from the comfort and
convenience of your own home! Our school
benefits from all sales, including books,
games, gifts, and even in-store cafe pur-
chases. Be on the lookout for more details
to follow in the coming weeks!

SHOCKERS SPORTS
Booster Club Fosters School Spirit Can you imagine your school without a football team, a cheerleading squad,
or pep rallies? Even if your child doesn’t play sports, cheering for their school
and their teammates at sporting events fosters a sense of community, cama-
raderie, and school pride. South Charlotte’s Booster Club, a nonprofit volun-
teer organization, was established to promote school spirit and provide sup-
port to our student athletes and coaches. Thanks to the parent support
during the 2016-2017 school year, the SCMS Booster Club made stellar
accomplishments, including:
Purchased new uniforms for all sports teams
Sponsored the fall, winter, and spring sports banquets
Hosted fall pep rally
Provided programs during football games, highlighted corporate
sponsors, and much more!
Our 2016-2017 sports teams were amazing! Congratulations to our base-
ball team for claiming its 9th league championship in school history
and 2nd in the last four years!
Our membership drive will kick off shortly. All of our students are in need of
support, so please consider becoming a member of the Booster Club, re-
gardless of whether or not you have a child in a sport. If you are interested in
helping with the Booster Club or being a corporate sponsor, email Heather
Fuller at heathercfuller@gmail.com. As always, thank you for your considera-
tion and support!
Attention Parents of Rising 7th & 8th Graders:
Summer break is a perfect time for you to sched-
ule a physical examination for your child if they are
interested in trying out for a sport during the
2017-2018 school year. As part of CMS athletic
eligibility requirements, student athletes must re-
ceive a medical examination by a duly licensed
physician every 395 days (1 year and 1 month).
Note: This is a new policy as physicals used to be
valid for only 365 days.
Students must have a 2.0 grade point average
(GPA) in order to try out and participate in athlet-
ics. The student’s previous semester GPA is used
to determine eligibility. (Example: We will use the
spring semester GPA to determine eligibility for fall
sports.)

Tryouts are September 5-6. If needed, there will be
a third day of tryouts on September 7.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE’S PHYSICAL EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT
South Charlotte Physical Education is a program that shapes positive attitudes towards fitness,
achievement, teamwork, and student responsibility. Maximum participation is expected,
necessary, and revered as a foundation for fitness goals and the acquisition of knowledge and skills.
Physical Education is REQUIRED for every student by the state of North Carolina.
Students will need: A white short-sleeve crew neck T-shirt, athletic shorts (MUST follow the school dress code).,
running or athletic shoes, a small CLEAR water bottle, and a one-subject spiral notebook. A combination lock is
optional. (Please see below for clothing specifications.)
Shirts - white short-sleeve CREW neck T-shirts, may have writing as long as it is appropriate for school, must be
long enough so that we cannot see any stomach when arms are stretched above the head. Shirts will not be
cinched and tied up with ponytail holders.
Shorts (GIRLS) - shorts must be athletic shorts (no buttons, zippers, snaps, pockets), NO cotton gymnastics or
cheerleading shorts (e.g., Soffe) or bike shorts will be allowed, NO shorts with writing on the behind, shorts may
not be rolled down at the waist and MUST follow the school dress code (school length policy).
(BOYS) - shorts must be athletic shorts (no buttons, zippers, snaps, pockets), shorts must end just above the knee
and stay up on hips.
*Shorts are the discretion of the teacher. If shorts are deemed too short/tight (girls) or too loose to stay up on
the hips or too long (boys), the student may be required to borrow school PE shorts for class for a daily clothes
grade of zero. We will show examples the first day of class. Shorts and shirts sold by the PTA at the school store
for PE are appropriate for class.
**Inexpensive and appropriate mesh shorts can be purchased at Wal-Mart and Target for $10-$15, and 4-packs
of white plain T-shirts can be found at the same stores in the boys’ section for $10. Do not spend a lot of money
on clothes that are easily misplaced.
We will hit the ground running – literally. To give your child the best chance for success in this challenging
course, practice daily strength and conditioning. Staying active and playing outside, as opposed to indoor video
games, will allow your child to experience a bit of confidence on day one. We are a fitness-based program that
gets results while focusing on student self-motivation, goal setting, pride, responsibility, adhering to deadlines,
and other real-world applicable skills. Results are not achieved without dedication and hard work. Inactivity and
obesity have become an epidemic and, with your support and a little hard work, we will return your children to
you in better shape than when they entered our class.
Physical education is your BEST health insurance!
