Remembering
On Memorial Day, May 28 2007, Sidna Farley
died after a long battle with Parkinson’s. She
suffered from an aggressive form of the disease
over the last nine years and the last six left her
unable to knit.
Sidna is well known as being one of the
Elizabeth Zimmermann’s oft-Timers (regular
camp attendees) and a proponent of circular
knitting and Elizabeth's percentage system. Her
philosophies and expertise are evident in her
self-published books, Seamless Sweaters and
Sidna’s Socks. She began teaching in 1981 at
Skyloom Fibers in Denver and was a popular and well respected instructor.
Her annual Colorado Knitting Camp (CONK) in the Black Forest near Colorado
Springs was a highlight for many knitters and still continues with her blessing.
Editor Rick Mondragon was a regular attendee and credits her as a mentor and
important influence in his career.
She was a frequent contributor to Knitter’s, a popular Stitches' instructor,
and designed for Brown Sheep Wool Company. Her design approach was
practical. Many knitters would knit a Sidna design in multiple versions as they
had a timeless elegance and simplicity to them.
She was a passionate and generous teacher, encouraging skilled and tal-
ented knitters to go beyond their hobby and into the industry.
Sidna is survived by her husband, Dick, and their two children, Ian Farley
of Greeley, and Sarah Peiker of Denver; her sisters, Francy Scheele and Jean
Hyland; and three grandsons.
A memorial service was held for her on June 9 at Trinity Methodist Church
in Denver, with many of her CONK students in attendance. Her spirit lives on in
the many hands and hearts she touched. We will miss her.
Memorial contributions can be sent to the National Parkinson Foundation,
1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Miami, FL 33136-1494 or America's Second Harvest, 35 E.
Wacker Drive, Suite 200, Chicago, IL 60601.
