The GMD is replaced by three new categories which necessitated the creation of new MARC fields:

1. Content type (336) – i.e. text, performed music, spoken word

2. Media type (337) – i.e. audio, video, computer, microform, unmediated

3. Carrier type (338) – i.e. videodisc, audio disc, online resource

Controlled vocabularies

• Closed lists in RDA 6.9.1.3, 3.2.1.3, 3.3.1.3

Content type

• For images, also whether in two or three dimensions and presence or absence of movement (e.g., “two-dimensional moving image”)

Media type

• Scope = “a categorization reflecting the general type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource”– “audio,” “projected,” “microform,” “video,”

• Broad categories; specific types in Carrier type (RDA 3.3)

Carrier type

• Scope = “a categorization reflecting the format of the storage medium and housing of a carrier in combination with the type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource”– “audio disc,” “computer disc,” “microfiche,”

“slide,” “volume,” etc.

• Don’t confuse with term used in Extent (MARC 300 $a): some terms in common

• AACR chapter 21 prescribes which main and added entries should (and should not) be made

• RDA is much less prescriptive

-The creator of a resource is core(0.6.6)-There are no limitations on what AACR calls

added entries

• If more than one, only the creator having principalresponsibility named first in resource is required

• If more than one and principal responsibility notindicated, only the first-named creator is required
