What is RDA?

RDA: Resource Description and Access

• New cataloguing standard, replacing AACR2

• Guidelines on cataloguing digital resources

• Stronger emphasis on helping users find, identify, select and obtain the info they want

• “clustering” bibliographic records to show relationships

3

Page 4: RDA: An Executive Overview

RDA is International

• A collaborative effort: JSC, LOC, Dublin Core, IFLA

• Use FRBR and FRAD as a theoretical foundation

• Emphasize “taking what you see” approach to description – encouraging machine capture of metadata

RDA and AACR2

• To make RDA different, but compatible

• Designed to work in current catalogues

• RDA records will co-exist with AACR2 records in the same databases

• Not just for libraries

• Designed for current and future environments

• Flexible to support description of all types of resources

RDA built on FRBR, FRAD

• Record data that is important to the user

• Importance based on relationship to tasks

• Careful distinction between content and carrier

• Broad base of international support (IFLA)

• Help users : find, identify, select and obtain

Dracula?

21

Page 22: RDA: An Executive Overview

1. Work

• The abstract idea, or intellectual creation

Eg. “Dracula” (the abstract idea/story that came from the mind of Bram Stoker)

22

Page 23: RDA: An Executive Overview

2. Expression

• The fulfillment of those ideas through words, sound, images.

(same story, different ways of telling the story)

24

Page 24: RDA: An Executive Overview

2. Expression

• Same expression

- First edition

- Reprints, facsimiles

• New expression

– Dracula (Spanish translation)

– New edition (with new foreword)

– Illustrated edition (same # of chapters)

– Audio CD (same text)

25

Page 25: RDA: An Executive Overview

3. Manifestation

• The physical embodiment of that expression

– Eg. Dracula [paperback]

– Eg. Dracula [e-book]

(same text or words, different means of delivery)

26

Page 26: RDA: An Executive Overview

4. Item

• An actual copy of a particular manifestation

• Eg. Dracula [DVD]

Considerations

• Establishing local practices and policies

• Derived cataloguing: What to accept? what to correct?

• What constitutes a ‘good’ RDA record?

• What to ask your vendors (hybrid records)

• What to display in Public Catalogue
