INDUSTRY PROFILE (Global Scenario)

The need of machine tools industry arose way back during the Second World War.

Britain was the mother country of the industrial machine tool in the 18th century and a world leader in super heavy machine . Er.J.E. Reinecker was the father of Machine Tools.

In 19th century another Scientist Philip Scranton worked on the governing system of the machine tools and came up with Automated Machine Tools.

The Machine tools manufacturing countries had aturnover of US$ 66.85 billion globally in 2010 which represents a 21% gain from 2009’s $54.7-billion (US dollars).

• The total global consumption for 2010 is estimated to be $57.874 billion (US dollars).

INDUSTRY PROFILE (Indian Scenario)

The Indian machine tools industry ranks 13th in production and 7th in the

consumption of machine tools in the world.

The sector is largely unorganized – about 160 players in a total of around 400

players in the market are organized sector.

Top 10 companies contribute to around 70% of the total production, with

Hindustan

Machine Tools Limited (HMT) contributing around 32%

Majority of Indian machine tool manufacturers have ISO certification .

The industry employs around 65,000 skilled and unskilled personnel.

The estimated production for 2010 is $525 million.(US dollars).

The consumption of machine tools for 2010 is estimated to be $340 million (US

dollars).

Hindustan Machine Tools, renamed as HMT Limited was incorporated in 1953, but commissioned in 1955. The plant was inaugurated by then prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

It is a public sector company which emerged with main objective of building mother machines.

HMT Machine Tools Limited was formed as a wholly-owned subsidiary of HMT Limited during 2001.

HMT Machine Tools Limited has a turnover of around Rs 200crores at present.

HMT has Manufactured and supplied over 100,000 machines till date for domestic market and Exported over 18,000 machines.

HMT Machine Tools’ Products cover general purpose machines, special purpose machines and CNC machines to meet the application needs of every engineering industry.

Autocratic leadership is followed by HMT- MTL. This is also known as Authoritarian,

Directive or Homothetic style.

In this style according to my observation a manager centralized decision –making power in

him.

TOP – DOWN Approach where in the manager structures the complete work situation for his

employees and they follow.

The required qualification of the employees in Diploma, ITI, Engineering and experience

will be required for technical department, other than technical department jobs will assign

on the basis of graduation and post graduation. There is in no qualification for helper jobs.

SKILLS

Skill implemented in HMT has been divided into three levels, they are:

Top level: It requires more conceptual skills, experience, and decision making

ability. (Executives: IIT, IIM, FMS, Experience 35years )

Middle level: It requires Managerial skills, problem solving capacity. (Managers:

NIT, MBA)

Lower level: it requires more Technical skill and Knowledge. (BE, ITI, Diploma

Holders)

Shortage of funds because of mixed use of Manufacturing units.

There is huge a demand of machine tools in domestic and International Markets.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

• The Summer In-plant Training at HMT Machine Tools Ltd was a new experience, while

training I was exposed to working environment of the organization. It was great

experience working with the professional personalities. There decision making skills, how

they are working under pressure, efficient allocation of duties, friendly environment, even

communication with in the organization.

• The organization study of the in –plant training has been very instrumental in

understanding the company profile, its background, established and its goals. The

organization structures its flow of authority and delegation of responsibility reflects the

efficiently and productivity of the firm, the organization flow chart gives a clear picture and

understanding about the functioning of a company.
