Welcome... Dustin and I would like to welcome you to our first online bull sale! We would also like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all of our past customers who have supported our program with both bull and female purchases. We take great pride in the fact that we have a high rate of repeat customers. Over the last four years, 70% of our bulls have sold to repeat customers, and in 2015 alone, 83% of our bulls went to customers that have purchased Rainbow River bulls in the past. Over the years, we have worked hard to continually improve our genetics, focusing on the strengths of the Simmental breed and the traits that we feel are valuable in purebred and commercial breeding programs. Docility, calving ease, fertility, milking ability, efficiency of gain, good hair coats, balance, muscle expression and moderation of frame continue to be at the forefront of our program selection criteria. Our bulls are fed to allow optimal growth while minimizing fat deposition. The most repetitive compliments we receive about our bulls each year is how they are so docile and in optimal body condition. Our efforts to produce better breeding stock that will be easy to handle and profitable for our customers will continue into the future. Until now, we have marketed our bulls by private treaty to commercial breeders across Manitoba. When my parents managed the purebred herd, Dad always sold their bulls by private treaty each year. Private treaty bull sales is what I grew up with, so it was how I wanted to sell our bulls when I took over the herd. Over the last four bull seasons we have seen the interest and demand for our bulls grow to the point where our customers want to get their “pick of the bulls” as early as September before the calves are weaned. Last year, half of our bulls were sold before January 1, and we were completely sold out of bulls in February. While this is a “good problem to have”, it helped prompt us to take the next step in marketing our bulls. We decided to move to an online bull sale in early March for several reasons. We appreciate how busy cattle producers are, and we feel an online sale offers our customers flexibility and equal opportunity to view, bid on and purchase the bull of their choice according to their convenience and from the comfort of their home. We also value and protect the health and biosecurity of our herd and those of our customers, and an online sale al-lows us to market our bulls without transporting them off farm. Since many commercial breeders are busy calving from mid-March to April/May, we felt that an early March bull sale would be the most convenient timing to help our customers complete their bull purchases before calving gets busy. I have thoroughly enjoyed private treaty sales because of the one-on-one communication with other cattle producers and for the opportunity to get to know our customers, what they value in their breeding programs, and their taste in herd bulls. So please, we hope you still contact us to arrange a time to come to the farm to view and talk about the bulls we have on offer. If you don’t have time to come view the bulls in advance of the sale, we welcome you to join us at the farm for our Open House on Saturday, March 5, 2016 (the day before sale close out). For those who can’t make it to the farm, we will have videos of the bulls on our website and online with LiveAuctions.tv for you to review at your leisure. From Friday, March 4 to Sun-day, March 6 you can participate in our online sale from the comfort of your home, the calving barn, or your tractor. Be sure to either set your proxy bid or be online for our close out at 7 pm CST on Sunday, March 6 to ensure you get the bull you want. Dustin and I are excited about the 14 bulls we have on offer this year. We hope you have the time to look through our offering and if you like what you see, we hope you invest in a Rainbow River herd bull. Nobody knows our bulls better than I do, so if you have any questions about any of our sale lots or about the sale format in general, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you do not have internet access or do not feel comfortable with bid-ding online, please contact any of us or the LiveAuctions staff and we would be happy to handle your phone in bids with the strictest of confidentiality and professionalism. Buy with confidence knowing that we stand behind the cattle we sell!

Sincerely, Jennilee Stewart

Sale feature! It is with mixed emotions that we offer Navigator for sale, but with this being our first bull sale we wanted to offer something special. This bull has been a standout since the day he was born. He has always had the look of a herd bull, even at a young age. As a calf, Navigator demonstrated early maturity, masculinity and ample muscle expression, and at nine months of age he looked as much like a mature bull as any we have seen before. His temperament is like no other, he is so incredibly docile and easy to handle. Navigator is heavily muscled and wide topped, yet soft made through his middle third and presents himself with an attractive head and neck. He is sound on his feet and legs, and strides out well. At the 2014 Manitoba Livestock Expo, Navigator won Grand Champion Simmental Bull Calf and then was named the Reserve Champion Simmental Bull! Navigator did suffer an eye injury as a yearling, but after recovering he bred like a champ servicing 22 cows and still maintained good body condition. As I write this, we anxiously await the arrival of his first calves starting early February. Navigator was born with a short gestation being 5 days early (279 days). Selling full interest and full possession. We reserve the right to retain semen for in-herd use.

42B is a coming 2-year old virgin bull that is ready to cover some extra cows. His dam was one of my most consistent, fertile cows who milked heavily with a beautiful udder and raised one heck of a bull calf almost every year. There is a good chance that 42B will transmit his blaze face onto his progeny as it runs at least 2 generations deep on his maternal side. Being a June born calf, 42B has been mainly grown only on forage his entire life, up until December 2015 when he was started on a grower ration. He is a growthy bull with lots of length of spine, sound legs, excellent feet and an attractive front end. He should calve easily on cows and second calvers with his CE and BW EPD’s ranked at the top 15% of the breed.

Sale feature! 2C is an outstanding calving ease prospect that I believe should work well on heifers. Raised by a first-calf heifer with a great udder, he has a 75 lb BW, acceptable performance, and a quiet disposition. He is the most similar to his sire of any of his siblings so far, but I believe 2C is even BETTER than Overdrive was. The name of the game is to “breed them up”, and I feel that we have successfully done so with this young bull. 2C is so attractive through his head, neck and shoulder - you just can’t help but focus your attention on how all his pieces blend so perfectly together. He boasts a deep, well-sprung rib with incredible softness of middle, a strong top and wide hip. He is sound structured and has thick hair that’s typical of all Overdrive progeny. Another bonus - 2C demonstrated extreme vigor as a newborn calf. All Overdrive calves have incredible vigor when born, and Neil Carson has told me it originates from Overdrive’s sire, Rashad. I expect that with vigor running two generations deep, 2C should pass on the same trait to his progeny. We reserve the right to retain semen for in-herd use.

Another feature Overdrive son that is dark red, thick and soggy, yet maintains a stylish profile. 6C is a favorite of mine and probably one of the most powerful

Overdrive sons we’ve raised to date. He has high performance, ranking #3 for WW and #2 for YW. His extra jam comes from York, a bull we raised and used for one year. Every single York calf dominated the performance rankings come weaning time, and 6C’s dam was no exception. When a first calf heifer can raise a bull like 6C on her first try, we know she’s got a bright future ahead! She is also a maternal sibling to our Lot 10 feature bull - so you can see that power is consistent in 6C’s pedigree. 6C is good haired, has good scrotal development and will add pounds to a calf crop.

7C is a good, all-around bull and an excellent candidate for the heifer pen. Look at his pedigree - sired by the $75,000 Red Mountain calving ease sire, and going back to MRL 67X, a reliable calving ease bull we use out of the go-to calving ease sire, Red Force. It’s not a surprise that 7C will work in the heifer pen with his 87 lb BW, and EPD’s ranking at the top 5% of the breed for CE and top 10% for BW.

7C also has a strong maternal backing - look at his Milk EPD ranked at the top 20% of the breed. He was raised by a first-calf heifer who’s udder is absolutely perfect in every regard, which is also no surprise as udder quality is stacked sky-high from MRL 67X and from 4A’s dam, 106L. While raising 7C, his 2-year old dam conceived on her first AI service, giving us twins in her second year! 7C has good performance, great hair, excellent scrotal development, and should sire females worthy of building a cowherd around.

Here’s a top performing, red blaze face bull that will add stretch and pounds to his progeny. If you’re looking for a bull to keep daughters from, I would urge

you to consider 31C. His dam and granddam were two of my best milking, most beautifully uddered females on the farm. Teat size and udder attachment were second to none on 31C’s dam, and she’s also a maternal sibling to both Lot 2 and the dam of Lot 7. Want to add that “money stripe” to your calves? 31C should be the ticket too, as he is at least the third generation to carry the blaze face, so there’s a high probability that he’ll stamp his calves with it also. A full brother to 31C was one of our high selling bulls in 2015 going to Doyle Penner of Arnaud, MB.

28C is a very docile, wide-topped, soft made, good performing bull with a great hair coat and a small white “flick” on his forehead. His photo really doesn’t do

him justice. His dam is a very attractive, beautifully uddered cow who is sired by Spartacus, a bull originating from Barry Labatte’s ET program. We sold a maternal sister to 28C to the good folks at Wheatland Cattle Co. in the 2012 Shades sale. Look to 28C to add docility, hair, width and maternal strength to his calves.

Sale feature! Glacier is an incredible calving ease bull that has been a stand out all his life. Mothered by a great first calf heifer with a beautiful udder, Glacier is eye appealing, as THICK as you can make them, deep flanked, very soft made with lots of depth and spring of rib, and smooth through his shoulder and neck. He is very moderate in frame so don’t expect him to be a big bull, but his width and mass in a smooth made package is what makes him so interesting. Glacier’s “claim to fame” will be moderating frame size while adding style, and siring light birth weight calves. He has an 80 lb BW, ranks at the top 5% of the breed for CE, BW, and MCE, top 30% for Milk, and at the top 20% and 15% for Ribeye Area and Marbling. He has a large scrotal and thick hair. If easy doing ability, udder quality and dark red pigment mean anything to you, then Glacier can’t be beat. His dam is easy fleshing, and beautiful udders and deep red pigment run 4 generations deep on his maternal side. Glacier and his dam were shown twice this summer and won Grand Champion Simmental Female at the MSA summer show, then Res. Champion 2 Yr Old Female at the Harding Fair! At the Manitoba Ag Ex, Glacier was shown once without his dam and placed as a top two Simmental Finalist in the All-Breeds Jackpot Bull Show! We regard Glacier so highly that we reserve the right to retain semen for in-herd use.

21C comes to you out of our ET program. He is a long bodied, well balanced, easy moving bull with adequate depth of rib and softness in his pattern. He has good

performance numbers, nice hair and a quiet disposition. His sire is the $75,000 AI sire, Red Mountain, and his dam, Jacey 79W, is a full sibling to the dam of the $190,000 SVS Captain Morgan. As a bred heifer, 79W was Supreme Champion Female at the 2010 Saskatoon Fall Fair, and with her first calf at side, she won Reserve National Champion Female at Farmfair in 2011. Since then, 79W has raised several feature bulls, as well as 21C’s full sister who sold this fall at Agribition for $14,000. 21C has a tried, tested and proven pedigree to back up his desirable phenotype, so buy with confidence.

12W has done it yet again, raising another big time performance bull. This moderate framed, good milking cow really knows how to make them. She has never given me a

daughter, but her sons are high sellers every year. Her first son sold to Reg Loewen, her next three sons are working in Tom Teichroeb’s good commercial herd, and she has a nice Riddler bull calf for next year’s sale. 30C is our #1 gaining bull with an ADG of 5.25 lbs, and his maternal brother last year was also our high gaining bull at 5.16 lbs ADG. 30C is massive over his top with a thick, square hip, has lots of rib capacity, length and nice big bone. He has beautiful, thick hair inherited from his sire. The performance in 30C is predictable. His calves will “crush” the scales down!

10C is a very stylish, well-balanced and docile Dictator son that comes from my Blackie cow family, which is our foundation black cow family and definitely the most prolific in our herd. The females are big volumed in moderate frames, very sound footed and

they milk well. 10C’s dam fits that description perfectly. 10C has three of my most productive black cows stacked in his pedigree with 4W, 76T and the original “Blackie” 321N who is 13 years young and part of our flush program. Plus, add in the maternal strength from Dictator’s dam, CG Black Opal. Udder perfection runs deep in Opal and her daughters. 10C may not be the biggest bull in the pen, but he is one of the most maternally bred. Expect 10C to add style to your calf crop while leaving some productive daughters behind.

Attention commercial breeders! 8C is a SALE FEATURE that has been a farm and visitor favorite all year long. What a freight train! He demonstrates power and performance with strong muscle expression and good scrotal development.

He moves out like a cat and tracks very well. His impressive length of body captures everyone’s attention, and as a calf, his length, muscle expression and masculinity was a wow factor. 8C weaned off as the heaviest calf at 963 lbs on Sept 13 and has remained as one of the top gaining bulls in the pen. Did you notice that he is a paternal brother to Navigator (Lot 1)? If your goal is to source a new herd sire to add pounds to your calf crop, then look no further. The easiest way to add pounds to your calves without sacrificing calving ease is by adding length of spine, and 8C will accomplish exactly that.

Sale feature! 35C is one of the nicest patterned bulls I’ve raised to date. He is a favorite of mine and everyone who has seen him. 35C has a presence that demands your attention, and when you get behind this guy he blows you away with his power, width and dimension. He profiles nicely with an attractive blaze-faced head, has a soft, capacious middle third, and is wide hipped with an attractive front end. 35C moves freely with sound feet and legs beneath him. His dam is one of the most attractive females in my herd with an absolutely perfect udder - even at 10 years of age. I wish I could have a herd full of females with udders like hers. 35C’s sire, Godfather, has impressed me with the consistency in type and performance of his progeny - they all seem to climb to the top of the pack. 35C ranked #1 for performance at weaning, and was the third highest gainer for YW also. On average, he’s the best gaining bull in the pen, and phenotypically he’s also one of the best. 35C is a bull that will make a positive change to a breeding program, buy with confidence!

38C will be one of the first sons to sell from the impressive $60,000 Circuit Breaker sire. He was the only Circuit Breaker son we had born last year, but he is a darn good one! I really like how 38C profiles, and admire the softness, depth and capacity in his middle. He is wide-topped, has great hair, and is a sound bull

that moves freely. His dam is a stout, moderate framed female and a direct daughter of the BDV Amanda cow that made such an impact on the Spring Creek Simmentals herd. 34T’s Liner 56U daughter here is impressive, and she did a great job on 38C also. Do not overlook 38C because of his age. Because of how good he is, we decided to use Circuit Breaker more heavily in 2015 and will do so again in 2016. 38C will add softness, rib capacity, hair and style to his calves. With his CE and BW EPDs ranked at the top 20% and 10% of the breed, he will calve easily on cows and second calvers.

AUCTION GUIDELINESWelcome to the Rainbow River Simmentals Online Bull Sale. We have tried to create an easy to work with online auction process. Please read the following instructions and recommendations. If you have any trouble or questions, please get in touch with us.AUCTION DATES AND TIMESThe online auction will run from 9:00 am CST on Friday, March 4 with the online sale close out to start at 7:00 pm CST on Sunday, March 6, 2016. A sale order will be posted Sunday afternoon. If you do not have computer access or do not feel comfortable with bidding online, phone in bids will be accepted at the numbers listed on the Sale Information page in the front of this catalogue. Please arrange your phone bid in advance of the sale close out. Register online early to allow adequate time to have your name entered into the system.HOW TO PARTICIPATE• Inordertoparticipateintheonlineauctionyouwillneedtopre-registerandobtainabuyernumber.• Todothis,gototheLiveAuctionswebsite,www.liveauctions.tv,andselectRainbowRiverSimmentalsOnlineBullSale.• Afterloggingin, clickon“REGISTERFORABUYERNUMBER”.• Thisformrequiresyoutofilloutyourbankname,city,state/province,phonenumberandacontactperson.• Ifbiddinghasalreadystartedyoumaystillregister, butpleaserememberthatauthorizationtobidisnotinstantaneous. We recommend that you register for a buyer number at least the day before the closing of the sale.HOW THE AUCTION WORKS• Onceyouhaveausernameandhavereceivedabuyernumber, youarereadytobid.• YouwillseeascreenthatisuniquetoyouruserID.Therewillbealistcontainingthesalelots.Ifyouclickonalot,thevideo clip or photo will be displayed to the right. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. When you enter a proxy bid amount, the LiveAuctions system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your maximum bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. If another bidder had a higher maximum, you will be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT”. But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum, you win the final bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, you pay only the amount of your last bid. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed, making it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assist those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of final bidding and close out.THE FINAL CLOSEOUT BIDDING PROCESSThe final close out bidding will start with the first lot on the pre-posted sale order. At this time you may only bid on this lot; it’s video will be displayed as well as the clock counting down. There will also be a LiveAuctions tech announcing what price we are at and the amount of time left on the clock (this information is also visible on your screen). When the bidding starts, the bidding clock will run for a pre-announced time (usually 30 or 45 seconds) or until there is a bid, at which time the clock will rewind to its original 30 or 45 seconds. For example: if the bidding clock gets down to 5 seconds remaining then a higher bid is submitted, the clock will then restart. The rewind process will continue with each bid received until the pre-announced time has expired without a bid. The lot will then be considered sold to the last (highest) bidder. Once that lot has sold, we will sell the next lot and so on, until all of the lots have been closed one at a time.BIDDING TIP: Each year we receive a few calls from breeders who wanted to bid on a lot, but failed to watch the bidding clock and let the bidding time expire. If you are interested in a particular lot, be sure to submit your bid well before the clock winds down to its final seconds. Sometimes due to an unexpected delay in internet speed or a delay in your computer audio, your bid may not be submitted in time to beat the few remaining seconds left on the clock. This is where using the proxy bid can be useful ensuring you do not miss a bid! We advise you to participate in the sale close out on a desktop or laptop computer connected to reliable internet, if possible. Be aware that the internet connection or audio can delay if using an ipad or smartphone. Also, be sure to compare the visual bid amount to the bid that is being asked for on your audio. If the visual bid request is higher, that means you are experiencing a delay in your incoming audio. In this case, watch your screen and bid according to the higher bid amount visually displayed on your screen. If you have any questions feel free to contact any of the LiveAuctions staff as they would be happy to assist you.Jessy Milne-Smith: (613) 229-1073 Brad Fahrmeier: (816) 392-9241 Shari Leachman: (306) 903-7289
