New study explains how low-dose aspirin may prevent cancer

New research conducted bya team of scientists fromOregon Health and ScienceUniversity (OHSU) in collab-oration with Oregon StateUniversity (OSU) in theU.S., reinforces the ideathat low-dose aspirin intakemay help stop cancer andhinder cancer cells fromproliferating. Additionally, the research also explainsthe mechanism by which asmall dose of aspirin mayindeed inhibit cancer cellproliferation and metastasis.Cancer is one of the leadingcauses of death in theworld, according to theWorld Health Organization(WHO). Its prevalence ispredicted to increase in thenext few years. In 2012, can-cer accounted for 8.2 million

deaths worldwide. In terms of prevention, theCenters for Disease Controland Prevention (CDC) recommend for making

healthy lifestyle and dietarychoices such as avoidingtobacco and alcohol as well as staying with physicallyactive and eating plenty offruits and vegetables. Newresearch reinforces the ideathat low-dose aspirin intake

may also help to preventcancer. This is the first time that astudy has shown the abilityof platelets to regulate the-expression of c-MYC in cancer cells. The researchers note thatalmost a third of colon can-cer patients and 42% of pa-tient with pancreatic cancerhad over expression of c-MYC oncorprotein. They also find that the im-pact of aspirin has on bloodplatelets is just as effectivein high doses as it is at lowones. As a result, clinicianscan weigh up the risks andbenefits of aspirin intake, aswell as reduce the risk ofbleeding - which is a com-mon side effect of ingestingtoo much aspirin.

“YES WE CAN “A Symbolic Farewell Speech by Mr. BARACK OBAMA

Prachi Rathi, BJMC 1st yr.

‘Yes we can’ these were thelast words delivered by Mr.President in his farewellspeech. Mere miles fromwhere Barack Obama gavehis presidential victoryspeech in Grant Park,Chicago, eight years ago,he delivered a symbolicfarewell speech atChicago’s McCormick PlaceTuesday night on 10th Jan-uary, 2017 . Popular but po-litically humbled, PresidentBarack Obama said good-bye to the nation Tuesday

night, declaring during hisfarewell address that hehasn't abandoned his visionof progressive change butwarning that it now comeswith a new set of caveats.Mr. Barack Obama startedhis speech with a note ofThanks to American people. He said that he had beenvery touched with thewishes he received over thepast eight years and now itis his turn to say Thanks. Inhis speech, Mr. Obamapraised the people for all thesupport and respect he re-ceived from them. He statedthat people where the onlyreason for his proud as hefelt that the conversationwith them at White House, canteens , schools or col-leges are what kept himhonest ,cool and inspired. He also said that he was nota president but also ahuman being and every dayhe learned from peoplesomething new that madehim a better Optus, and aunique person. In hisspeech, Obama gave theaccount of past eight years, goals and strengths of the

America by saying that thiscountry suffered eight yearsago with deflation, reces-sion and unemployment. MrObama said that youngAmericans - including thosewho worked on his cam-paigns, and who believe "ina fair, just, inclusive Amer-ica" - left him feeling "evenmore optimistic about thiscountry than I was when westarted".In choosingChicago, Mr Obama hadearlier said he wanted to re-turn to "where it all started"for him and First LadyMichelle Obama, instead ofdelivering the speech fromthe White House.Over thecourse of three-quarters ofan hour, Mr Obama spokeof his effort to bring aboutchange during his two termsin office, and admitted thathe had not always suc-ceeded. His was joined on-stage at the end of hisspeech by Ms. Clinton, asymbolic handing over ofthe baton. "Yes we can. Yeswe did." A bookend to thespeech he delivered on thenight he won the presidencyin Grant Park, Chicago,

Barack Obama's farewelladdress contained much ofthe same hope and opti-mism that were hallmarks ofhis candidacy while at thesame time outlining hislegacy. But it was also an elegantlyworded warning: about thecountry's broken politics, itsnaked partisanship, its starkeconomic inequalities, itssocial and racial dislocation.Though he did not mentionthe President-elect byname, much of it obviouslyread like a rebuttal to Don-ald Trump's campaign.Obama called for respectfor the science of climatechange and drew one of hisbiggest applause lineswhen he noted: "I reject dis-crimination against MuslimAmericans." The line"democracy can bucklewhen we give in to fear,"could easily be interpretedas being aimed at DonaldTrump. Mr Obama's speechwas widely admired for hislyricism, delivery, and visionof America as an inclusive, positive society, despite thevery real problems it faced.
