How it Works
During suction stroke, a fixed amount (fixed
volume) of liquid at near suction conditions is
trapped inside the fluid chamber, then with
discharge stroke compresses it to dischargepressure, and pushes it to outlet nozzle.

Reasons for Using Reciprocating
Pumps
The total cost is lower.
High efficiency (84% up to 94%).
Suitable for high pressures (10,000 Psig).
Suitable for abrasive and / or viscous
slurries.
Capacity regulation simple.

Disadvantages
Pulsating flow
maintenance cost sometimes is greater than
that in centrifugal pump.
Low thermal efficiency when driven by a gas
such or steam.

Classification
Drive end, i.e. power source.
Orientation of centerline of the pumping element i.e.horizontal or vertical.
Action strokes per cycle of the crank shaft, single
acting or doubleacting.
Configuration of the pumping element: piston, plunger or diaphragm.
Number of drive rods, i.e, simples, duplex ormultiplex
