Proposed New School Design for RCE

• As presented to CIT and Community board on 4/1/2013

Current plan has over 40+ mature trees to be removed

Previous Design Outline

Existing Track & Baseball Diamonds

Existing Track & Baseball Diamonds

New baseball field will remove more trees.

Current teacher view of kid play areaduring recess.Teachers sit in shade

If teachers moved back to shade, view is blocked by building.

For adequate sight lines, teachers will need to sit on far side of field. Teachers sit in sun and too far away from kids.

The new proposed track is unacceptable to be used as a running track.

Existing one is a 3 lane ¼ mile track with mostly gradual turns.

The new track has 3 hard 90 Deg turns and too many curves.

Design has two very inefficient “wings”. Only one classroom on each side of hallway. No other new SBISD school is designed this way.

Design destroys track and wastes tax payers money.

Design covers over 25,000 SqFt of additional surface area, yet will add a second story. Only adding 50 more kids.

Existing retention pond is removed.

HollibrookMore efficient and shorter wings with classrooms on both sides

HousmanMore efficient and shorter wings with classrooms on both sides

Spring BranchMore efficient and shorter wings with classrooms on both sides

WilchesterMore efficient and shorter wings with classrooms on both sides

Meadow WoodCompact classroom buildings. Requires less SqFt.

Shadow OaksCompact & efficient school design

WestwoodCompact School Design

Pine ShadowsCompact design & kept the interior courtyards that RCE likes so much

“RCE’s Nature Courtyard”

High Fenced “Nature Courtyard”

Other schools have designed for a “Nature Courtyard” but most schools don’t use it. Instead they use the playground.

It’s unused, wasted & locked up space.

RCE Proposed Design

• Adds a 2nd story yet covers 25,000 more Sqft. of surface area which requires more rain water retention - but removing the existing basin.

• Mostly floor to ceiling glass construction which is most expensive construction material and energy inefficient, plus may distract kids with attention disorders.

• Much more expensive to build and operate with one classroom per side in each wing. “Leggy” design is wasteful and expensive.

• Destroys park & neighborhood funded track which is extensively used by community for recreation and sports.

• Removes over 40 mature trees in the playground and the parent drive.

• Reduces teacher visibility and control by spreading out play areas.
