Role of the NYS DOH• Work with NYSDEC to collect information needed to evaluate

potential exposure to environmental contamination

• Evaluate data and make recommendations to address any potential exposure and evaluate the need for additional information

• Ensure that remedy selected is protective of public health

23

Exposure• Physical contact with a chemical or substance

Inhalation (breathing) Direct contact (touching) Ingestion (eating/drinking)

• One or more of these physical contacts must occur before a chemical has the potential to cause a health problem

• Exposure does not necessarily mean that health effect will occur

24

Potential Exposure Pathways

Soil/Sediment

• Potentially complete exposure pathways include direct contact with and subsequent ingestion of sediment and soil in and around Willetts Creek.

Ground/Surface Water

• Public water is supplied to the surrounding area from a source not affected by this contamination

• Potentially complete exposure pathways exist with surface waters of Willetts Creek.
