Learning? It’s not “for

engineers” It’s not “for CAs” It’s the most

general-purpose educational qualification out there today

If so, what value is it of? Hmmm….

But Why? … Why MBA?

According to the Graduate Management Admissions Council, MBA provides you with …

An opportunity to improve personally Desired credentials An increase in career options Development of management knowledge and

technical skills Preparations to get a good job and opportunity

for quicker advancement An increase in earning power

An MBA is a formal program in Management/ Business Administration

Aims to Develop Future Leaders and CEOs

MBA does not get you a Job, it gets you a CAREER

Value of an MBA degree in $$$*

• During the early stage of their job career the average earnings gap between those with MBAs and those with bachelor’s degrees is over $25,000 per year.

• During their prime earning years, between the ages of 45 and 50, those with MBAs earn roughly twice the amount earned by their counterparts with bachelor’s degrees.

• The ROI (return on investment) for MBA degree is estimated to be 18%-22% which is higher than the average return on Dow Jones during the last two decades.

• For a two-year MBA the payback period is about 3.6 years meaning that three and a half years after your MBA, you will be better off even taking into account the direct investment and the salary foregone.

• “Getting an MBA today is like receiving a tax-free, cash award of more than $600,000.”

• * AACSBI BizEd and QS Top MBA, 2006

Students’ foremost reason…

However…

There are things an MBA simply cannot give you Real-World Knowledge Street Smarts Wisdom Attitude

How people decide?

It sounds glamorou

s

I don’t have a

job

MBA is a shortcut to big bucks

Because everyone is doing it

How You Should Decide

Understand What does MBA mean Where it can take your CAREER

Learn about choices post MBA Role Function Industry

So should I do an MBA,

NOW?

But I heard something about RECESSION

What is a Recession?

National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) defines it as:

“A significant decline in activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, visible

in industrial production, employment, real income, and wholesale-retail trade”

“… and it begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy

reaches a trough. Between trough and peak, the economy is in an expansion.”

According to International Monetary Fund(IMF),

“Recession is the economy shrinking for two consecutive quarters (6 months) with a

decrease in the GDP”

GDP (Gross Domestic Product): Value of all the reported goods and services produced by the people operating in the country

GDP = MONEY VALUE OF {C + I + G + (X – M)}

C = Consumables, I = Gross Investments, G = Government Spending, X = Exports, M = Imports

What is a Recession?

In Simpler Words

Lesser Demand in Market Hence Lesser Production Hence Fewer Jobs Hence Fewer Promotions Salary Cuts and even Lay Offs

That is, Lack of Opportunities

The Depression and MBAs

Popular Perception MBAs, and their machinations, brought this

recession upon us

So, Should I Worry?

Let’s check the History

1Period Time (in

months)October 1926 to November 1927 13

August 1929 to March 1933 43

May 1937 to June 1938 13

February 1945 to October 1945 8

November 1948 to October 1949 11

July 1953 to May 1954 10

August 1957 to April 1958 8

July 1981 to November 1982 16

July 1990 to March 1991 8

March 2001 to November 2001 8

So…

Now we know that Recession is not a new thing but a regular phenomenon that

occurs from time to timeIn fact, the world has already seen around

14 recessions since 1925!and

They have lasted, on an average, for around 13 months!!!

Remember

“Companies are always seeking skilled, competent managers who could handle challenges and give effective business

solutions for the benefit of the company”

Business Cycles

Make Most of Recession, Get an MBA!

“Education is a very crucial investment;

especially at this time”

And now some growing industries and sectors even in these

recessionary times

Life Sciences & Healthcare

Banking, Financial Services, Insurance

Automobile, Steel, Oil & Gas

Gems & Jewellery, Tourism & Hospitality

IT/ ITES, Telecom, Media & Entertainment

So an MBA can take you places

However…

Choice of Institute is Crucial

How to select a B School?

The CAT

Common Admission Test Gateway to IIMs “Believed” to be one of the toughest

entrance tests Traditionally, a Paper Based Test Now going online

All of us have heardthat

CAT KEEPS CHANGING!

What are the changes in the CAT?

Can you spot the trend?

The REAL Change

From

To

Test of Reasoning

… and now,

CAT is going Online!

Is this really a surprise?

NO!

Over the years, CAT has evolved to become more like GMAT/GRE

This can be inferred from changes in CAT

Same has been stated by IIMB in their recent notification as well

CAT Goes Online

What does Online mean? What will change? What will NOT change? What are the implications for me? How should I prepare for this?

Online Tests

Computer Adaptive Tests

Computer Based Tests

Challenges

Getting used to computers, keyboards and mouse

Working on computer for longer duration Adapting to online testing formats One question at a time:

Really thorough with concepts and application

CAT is so DIFFICULT!

That’s alright! But…

How do you define difficulty level?

A. Level of difficulty of question paper

CAT gives you a relative score

Hence difficult or easy questions actually doesn’t matter!

But lets do some questions…

Travelling Ant

• One ant starts walking from the base of a cylinder (Radius = 7 cm, Height = 33 cm) and ends up at the top of the cylinder at a point exactly above the starting point. Find the distance travelled by the ant.A. 50B. 53C. 55D. 57

Boats

Two boats are 10 kms apart and are travelling towards each other with speeds 18 kmph and 36 kmph. Find the distance between boats exactly 10 seconds before they collide.A. 50 mB. 150 mC. 500 mD. 3000 m

Boats

Relative speed 18+36 = 54 kmph = 15 mps Distance covered in last 10 seconds 15*10=150 mts

Euclid

Euclid has a triangle in mind. Its longest side has length 20 units and another of its sides has length 10 units. Its area is 80 sq units. What is the exact length of its third side?A. √240B. √250C. √260D. √270

Euclid

One side = 10 unitsArea = 80 units

10 units8 units

6 units 14 units

√260 units

ALL OF THESE WERE

CAT QUESTIONS!!!

How do you define difficulty level?

B. The Competition

What really matters is how you do vis-à-vis competition!

The Competition

CAT '08 2,75,000 applicants for 2000+ seats

Chances = 1 out of 135!!!

Now, that is difficult!!!

REALLY?

Lets See!

Applicants = 2,75,000Appeared for Test = 2,46,000

Almost 30,000 already out of competition

Chances = 1 out of 125

More than 50% appear for affiliated institutes

Number of IIM aspirants = 1,20,000 (approx)

Chances = 1 out of 60

Less than half of this number actually prepare

Number of SERIOUS IIM aspirants = 60,000 (approx)

Chances = 1 out of 30

Is that all?

NO!

IIMs give 3-5 GD/PI calls for every seati.e. minimum 6,000 call!!!

For a Serious IIM Aspirant to get a GD/PI Call

Chances = 1 out of 10!!!

And you thought CAT is difficult?

When do I start preparing for CAT ’10? The $1,000,000 answer

About 22 years ago
