Learning? It’s not “for
engineers” It’s not “for CAs” It’s the most
general-purpose educational qualification out there today
If so, what value is it of? Hmmm….
But Why? … Why MBA?
According to the Graduate Management Admissions Council, MBA provides you with …
An opportunity to improve personally Desired credentials An increase in career options Development of management knowledge and
technical skills Preparations to get a good job and opportunity
for quicker advancement An increase in earning power
An MBA is a formal program in Management/ Business Administration
Aims to Develop Future Leaders and CEOs
MBA does not get you a Job, it gets you a CAREER
Value of an MBA degree in $$$*
• During the early stage of their job career the average earnings gap between those with MBAs and those with bachelor’s degrees is over $25,000 per year.
• During their prime earning years, between the ages of 45 and 50, those with MBAs earn roughly twice the amount earned by their counterparts with bachelor’s degrees.
• The ROI (return on investment) for MBA degree is estimated to be 18%-22% which is higher than the average return on Dow Jones during the last two decades.
• For a two-year MBA the payback period is about 3.6 years meaning that three and a half years after your MBA, you will be better off even taking into account the direct investment and the salary foregone.
• “Getting an MBA today is like receiving a tax-free, cash award of more than $600,000.”
• * AACSBI BizEd and QS Top MBA, 2006
However…
There are things an MBA simply cannot give you Real-World Knowledge Street Smarts Wisdom Attitude

What is a Recession?
National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) defines it as:
“A significant decline in activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, visible
in industrial production, employment, real income, and wholesale-retail trade”
“… and it begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy
reaches a trough. Between trough and peak, the economy is in an expansion.”
According to International Monetary Fund(IMF),
“Recession is the economy shrinking for two consecutive quarters (6 months) with a
decrease in the GDP”
GDP (Gross Domestic Product): Value of all the reported goods and services produced by the people operating in the country
GDP = MONEY VALUE OF {C + I + G + (X – M)}
C = Consumables, I = Gross Investments, G = Government Spending, X = Exports, M = Imports
What is a Recession?
In Simpler Words
Lesser Demand in Market Hence Lesser Production Hence Fewer Jobs Hence Fewer Promotions Salary Cuts and even Lay Offs
That is, Lack of Opportunities
The Depression and MBAs
Popular Perception MBAs, and their machinations, brought this
recession upon us

The CAT
Common Admission Test Gateway to IIMs “Believed” to be one of the toughest
entrance tests Traditionally, a Paper Based Test Now going online
The Visible Change
No. of Sections No. of Questions Test Duration Scoring/Negative Marking No. of Options
Structure
Over the years, CAT has evolved to become more like GMAT/GRE
This can be inferred from changes in CAT
Same has been stated by IIMB in their recent notification as well
CAT Goes Online
What does Online mean? What will change? What will NOT change? What are the implications for me? How should I prepare for this?
Computer Adaptive Tests
GMAT Like Benchmarks candidates level of aptitude One question at a time Test adapts the level of difficulty of
questions to assess candidate’s performance
Computer Based Tests
Whole Question Paper at a time Navigate across the questions and sections Not much of the difference except the
media One Section at a time One Question at a time
What Will Change?
The Test Medium From Paper to Computers
The Structure Adaptive/Non Adaptive
Sectional/Question Level Evaluation Flexibility of Test Dates
What will NOT change?
Skills Tested Problem Solving Skills Language Skills Decision Making Skills Conceptual Clarity Application Ability
Challenges
Getting used to computers, keyboards and mouse
Working on computer for longer duration Adapting to online testing formats One question at a time:
Really thorough with concepts and application
CAT gives you a relative score
Hence difficult or easy questions actually doesn’t matter!
But lets do some questions…
Travelling Ant

How do you define difficulty level?
B. The Competition
What really matters is how you do vis-à-vis competition!
The Competition
CAT '08 2,75,000 applicants for 2000+ seats
Chances = 1 out of 135!!!
Now, that is difficult!!!
Lets See!
Applicants = 2,75,000Appeared for Test = 2,46,000
Almost 30,000 already out of competition
Chances = 1 out of 125
More than 50% appear for affiliated institutes
Number of IIM aspirants = 1,20,000 (approx)
Chances = 1 out of 60
Less than half of this number actually prepare
Number of SERIOUS IIM aspirants = 60,000 (approx)
Chances = 1 out of 30
For a Serious IIM Aspirant to get a GD/PI Call
Chances = 1 out of 10!!!
And you thought CAT is difficult?
