IMPACT

Days of Service May 31-June 1, 2012

The Pittsburgh Promise Day of Service was a tremendous success thanks to the hard work of volunteers. Hundreds of Promise ready students and current Promise recipients rallied together in projects across Pittsburgh to make a difference in their communities! During the Pittsburgh Promise Day of Service there was huge sense of community across the board for volunteers. Student volunteers participated in a variety of projects impacting many different social issues including hunger, environment, education, community cleanliness, healthcare, and more. Not only were volunteers educated about these social issues, but they also engaged in hands-on meaningful service that impacted many. Volunteers also had the opportunity to reflect on their service and how as young people they are difference makers. The Youth Engaged in Service (YES) program at Pittsburgh Cares teamed up with The Pittsburgh Promise to organize service activities for the young leaders. The day was designed to have youth develop and practice leadership skills as a decision maker, role model, advocate and volunteer. Pittsburgh Cares in partnership with The Pittsburgh Promise lead over 700 volunteers in 22 different projects. Pittsburgh Promise students and staff joined together to invest in the community that is investing in them.

“The men working with the students were great and really made the work fun for the students. Also, one of the students caught a chicken. ”

A Note from Holly

I send a sincere and BIG THANK YOU for outreaching to Pittsburgh Cares to help coordinate the Pittsburgh Promise Days of Service! I don’t think that we could have asked for a better two days in regards to youth engagement, the weather, projects, teacher participation, and your support! It was so good to see all of the students who showed up, gave back, and had a great time volunteering! I appreciate your partnership in making Pittsburgh a better place to live, work, and play as well as helping to provide a day of meaningful service throughout the city for Pittsburgh’s next generation of leaders. I’m hopeful that the day was inspiring to everyone and the experiences will light a flame in all of the student’s bellies to become more actively engaged in their communities.” ~Holly McGraw, Director of Youth Programs

“We enjoyed the students and the 2 teachers who came with them from Obama. They were such a delight, hard working and committed to the day. They finished all the task we had for them in helping us to get ready for our summer session. Thank you again.” ~Ayisha, Hill Dance Academy Theatre “Thank you again for allowing World Vision to be a part of the Pittsburgh Promise event. We are so grateful for the great partnership with Pittsburgh Cares. We had a great group from Langley on Thursday. The teachers were great, very much on top of things and involved with the work and supervising their students.” ~Laura, World Vision “I think it was a good group over all. The students planted over 50 trees and removed alot of invasive plants. I think the students enjoyed the experience and we should try to have them again next year.” ~Brian, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden “You did a great job coordinating this event and the volunteer leader was a wonderful addition to day’s activities. YMWAHA really enjoyed the students and looks forward to participating in future Pittsburgh Cares projects.” ~Pamela, Young Men and Women’s African Heritage Association “The UPrep group did a great job! A few of the students were real dynamos with a lot of energy.” ~Lynn, Holy Family Institute “It was a true pleasure to host this group.” ~Shelia, Glade Run
