Unit 3 Overview

Speech and Language Impairments I thought that you did a great job researching your states

qualifying factors. Some of you shared some great stories about how you have worked with students with speech impairments.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports I think that we all learned a lot from each other this week and

how we view behavior in the classroom. It is not always easy to handle difficult behaviors but, know that there is always help from a school psychologist or administrator if you need it.

Case Study - “Vivian”

Vivian is an 8-year-old student with developmental reading and writing disorders.  Her special education teacher has already provided modifications for her, such as using a picture schedule (as opposed to the written schedule on the blackboard), and this seems to help her with transitions. She also is encouraged to use the computer programs and audiocassettes to enhance her understanding in content areas such as science and social studies, in addition to reading. She often gets frustrated when working independently, but her aid, Ms. DelBarton, is effective in interceding when this happens.

“Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18. 

Intellectual functioning—also called intelligence—refers to general mental capacity, such as learning, reasoning, problem solving, and so on.

One criterion to measure intellectual functioning is an IQ test.  Generally, an IQ test score of around 70 or as high as 75 indicates a limitation in intellectual functioning.
