Unit 3 Overview

Speech and Language Impairments I thought that you did a great job researching your states

qualifying factors. Some of you shared some great stories about how you have worked with students with speech impairments.

This is a helpful website when teaching and need some fun activities and supplies for speech and language: www.superduperinc.com

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports I think that we all learned a lot from each other this week and

how we view behavior in the classroom. It is not always easy to handle difficult behaviors but, know that there is always help from a school psychologist or administrator if you need it.

Unit 4 Overview

* You will be researching AUTISM on your own this week. Google it and see what comes up. Here is a website that is very useful. You will find some reputable information here: (we will visit this site later)

www.autismspeaks.org

* You will also be looking at Developmental Disabilities and/or Mental Retardation.

Case Study - “Vivian”

Vivian is an 8-year-old student with developmental reading and writing disorders.  Her special education teacher has already provided modifications for her, such as using a picture schedule (as opposed to the written schedule on the blackboard), and this seems to help her with transitions. She also is encouraged to use the computer programs and audiocassettes to enhance her understanding in content areas such as science and social studies, in addition to reading. She often gets frustrated when working independently, but her aid, Ms. DelBarton, is effective in interceding when this happens.

Case Study Considerations…

What do you know about learning disabilities? How may Vivian's disabilities be affecting her ability to learn, her self-esteem, and her social relationships?

What are some accommodations and modifications that can be made to help Vivian be more successful?

What are some specific strategies you can use to address Vivian's reading, writing, and listening skills?

What are some ways to enhance her self-esteem and social relationships?

Autism

What is Autism?

“Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The other pervasive developmental disorders are PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified), Asperger's Syndrome, Rett Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Many parents and professionals refer to this group as Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

Interesting Facts About Autism….

1 in every 110 children is diagnosed with Autismmore common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and

pediatric AIDS combinedAn estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of

millions worldwide are affected by autismGovernment statistics suggest the prevalence rate of autism is

increasing 10-17 percent annually; reasons are not yet definedStudies suggest boys are more likely than girls to develop

autism and receive the diagnosis three to four times more frequently

Current estimates are that in the United States alone, one out of 70 boys is diagnosed with autism.

Autism…

What are the suspected causes of Autism?

Page 11: OUTLINE FOR TONIGHT 1. OVERVIEW OF UNIT 3 2. UNIT 4 READINGS 3. CASE STUDY DISCUSSION Welcome to Seminar! Week 4.

Causes of Autism…

It’s difficult to determine the cause and is relatively unknown

“The best scientific evidence available to us today points toward a potential for various combinations of factors causing autism – multiple genetic components that may cause autism on their own or possibly when combined with exposure to as yet undetermined environmental factors. “

“Timing of exposure during the child's development (before, during or after birth) may also play a role in the development or final presentation of the disorder. “

Simply, causes remain unknown http://www.autismspeaks.org/whatisit/index.php

Mental Retardation…

What is Mental Retardation?

Page 16: OUTLINE FOR TONIGHT 1. OVERVIEW OF UNIT 3 2. UNIT 4 READINGS 3. CASE STUDY DISCUSSION Welcome to Seminar! Week 4.

Mental Retardation…

Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18.

Intellectual functioning—also called intelligence—refers to general mental capacity, such as learning, reasoning, problem solving, and so on.

One criterion to measure intellectual functioning is an IQ test.  Generally, an IQ test score of around 70 or as high as 75 indicates a limitation in intellectual functioning.

Weekly Quote…

"I feel life is a journey and we all have to learn to ride the storm, for some of us it can seem more like a tidal wave, but with every storm the sun eventually comes back out."
